Thoracochromis brauschi is a small, intensely coloured haplochromine cichlid found in a single place on Earth: the spring-fed Fwa River of the Kasai region in the central Democratic Republic of the Congo. Despite a riverine address, its home is more lake than river — a chain of crystal-clear, plant-choked karst pools fed by limestone springs — and the fish has become one of the very few Congolese haplochromines that established a foothold in the aquarium hobby. Males trade the usual yellow anal-fin egg-spots of their tribe for a blaze of red on the throat and flanks, a reminder that this lineage of Thoracochromis sits close to the ancestral stock from which the great Lake Victoria cichlid flock is now thought to have sprung.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was described in 1965 by the Belgian ichthyologists Max Poll and Dirk F. E. Thys van den Audenaerde as Haplochromis brauschi, in a paper titled 'Deux cichlidae nouveaux du Sud du Bassin du Congo' (Revue de Zoologie et de Botanique Africaines, vol. 72), based on material from Lake Fwa in what was then the Belgian Congo. The holotype (MRAC 79506) and a long series of paratypes are held at the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, Belgium. The fish carried the catch-all generic name Haplochromis for most of its history, but in 1994 Tyson Roberts and Sven Kullander, in their monographic study of the endemic cichlids of the Fwa, reassigned it to Thoracochromis — a genus Peter Humphry Greenwood had erected in 1979 to gather a group of riverine and lacustrine African haplochromines from the Congo, Kasai and Nile basins that shared a distinctive squamation. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes still lists the conservative combination Haplochromis brauschi as 'current,' reflecting the long-standing instability of haplochromine generic limits, while FishBase, the Cichlid Room Companion and most of the hobby follow Roberts and Kullander in using Thoracochromis brauschi. The genus matters beyond bookkeeping: nuclear-marker work by Seehausen and colleagues (2003) pointed to Thoracochromis from the Congo and Nile, rather than the East African Astatotilapia, as the lineage ancestral to the explosive Lake Victoria–Edward species flock, placing brauschi and its Fwa relatives near a pivotal branch of the African cichlid radiation.

Morphology

Thoracochromis brauschi is a small cichlid, reaching about 4 in in total length — FishBase records a maximum of 4 in TL — with the compact, moderately deep-bodied build typical of stream-dwelling haplochromines. Coloration is strongly sex-linked. Dominant males are the show pieces: a brassy to greenish body overlaid with dark vertical barring, iridescent blue-green scaling on the flanks, and, most striking of all, a vivid red wash across the throat, chest and lower body that intensifies during display and gives the fish its reputation among keepers for 'war paint.' Females and subdominant males are far plainer — silvery to olive-tan with subdued barring — to the point that a low-ranking male can be hard to tell from a female. The genus name refers to the small, sharply size-demarcated scales of the thoracic (chest) region that Greenwood used to diagnose Thoracochromis. One feature regularly noted by aquarists is the near-absence of the yellow or orange anal-fin ocelli ('egg-spots') that are a near-universal courtship signal in haplochromine cichlids; wild-caught and aquarium males alike often show few or none, and the male's red coloration appears to substitute for them in spawning, an unusual arrangement within the tribe.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Fwa River system in the central DR Congo, on the border of the Kasaï-Oriental and Kasaï-Central provinces, roughly 62 mi northwest of Mbuji-Mayi and within the Sankuru–Kasai drainage of the middle Congo basin. The 'river' is in truth a remarkable karst spring system: water emerges from underground limestone (calcar) galleries already filtered to extraordinary clarity, gathers into spring pools and lake-like widenings, and flows about 9 mi through a savanna valley fringed by gallery forest. Because the springs rise through limestone, the water is unusual for the Congo basin — crystal-clear, moderately hard and alkaline rather than the soft, tea-stained blackwater most of the region's fishes inhabit. The Cichlid News account by Oliver Lucanus describes six springs feeding two lakes with 'medium hard' and 'alkaline' water, and the site sits at roughly 1503–1549 ft elevation. Aquatic vegetation is dense, with macrophytes — including Vallisneria — covering well over half the bed, and it is among these submerged plant beds that Thoracochromis brauschi lives and feeds. FishBase gives an in-situ temperature range of about 77–81 °F. The Fwa is now a recognised Key Biodiversity Area precisely because of the tight cluster of endemics it supports: alongside Thoracochromis brauschi live Thoracochromis callichromus, Cyclopharynx fwae, Cyclopharynx schwetzi, Schwetzochromis neodon and the characins Micralestes fodori and Brycinus fwaensis — a miniature species flock confined to a sliver of spring-fed water.

Feeding

Thoracochromis brauschi is principally a herbivore and detritivore. FishBase, drawing on the original ecological work, reports that it feeds mainly on plants — Vallisneria aethiopica is specifically named — together with algae and detritus, and its estimated trophic level (about 3.3) reflects that low, largely vegetable diet supplemented with whatever small invertebrates it takes incidentally from the plant beds and substrate. Aquarists corroborate the wild picture vividly: keepers report the fish 'mowing down large swaths of Vallisneria,' confirming that the dense macrophyte cover of the Fwa is as much a larder as a habitat. In the spring-pool community the species functions as one of the grazers working the abundant submerged vegetation and the algal and detrital film that coats it, rather than as a predator on other fishes.

Mating

Like other haplochromines, Thoracochromis brauschi is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder with no lasting pair bond — FishBase classes it as 'ovophilic, agamous.' Reproduction is driven by the male: a dominant male claims and defends a small territory and courts passing females in full breeding dress, his red throat and flanks flushing to maximum intensity as he displays and quivers. Unusually for the tribe, this species does not rely on the bright anal-fin egg-spots that most haplochromine males flash to lure the female into snapping at the spot near his vent — those ocelli are reduced or absent in brauschi, and the male's body coloration appears to carry the signalling load instead. Males are noticeably hard on one another and on females in the confines of a tank; keepers consistently describe a feisty, somewhat aggressive temperament and recommend keeping a single male with several females, or a large enough enclosure that subdominant fish can keep out of the dominant male's way.

Breeding

Spawning follows the classic haplochromine maternal mouthbrooding pattern. After courtship the female lays a small clutch of eggs on a cleaned surface or in a shallow pit and immediately takes them into her mouth; fertilisation is completed as she mouths the eggs near the displaying male. She then carries and incubates the developing eggs and larvae in her buccal cavity for roughly two to three weeks (the genus-typical interval), not feeding while brooding, and finally releases free-swimming fry that she may continue to shelter in her mouth for a time when threatened. Documented clutches are modest in keeping with the fish's small size — broods of a few dozen eggs are typical for haplochromines of this stature rather than the hundreds laid by larger cichlids. One persistent observation from breeders is a skewed sex ratio: attempts to raise the species in hard, alkaline water have repeatedly produced strongly male-biased broods, which keepers have variously attributed to water chemistry or to incubation temperature. Because the fish breeds readily once a compatible group is established, it has been maintained in the hobby for multiple captive generations, and it is a CARES Preservation Program species — a fish whose narrow wild range makes captive breeding a conservation matter as much as a hobbyist's reward.

In the aquarium

Thoracochromis brauschi is a rare but rewarding aquarium fish, kept by a small circle of African-cichlid specialists rather than offered routinely in the trade; F1 and F2 stock surfaces occasionally through specialist breeders and societies. It is not difficult to keep so much as difficult to find, and it asks for some thought about its temperament and its unusual water of origin.

A species tank or a tank of comparable robust haplochromines from about 75 US gallons (around 75 US gal) upward suits a group well; a single male with three or more females reduces the harassment that comes with this combative little fish. The most important point of husbandry is that, despite hailing from the Congo basin, this is NOT a soft-water blackwater cichlid. Its limestone-spring home is clear, moderately hard and alkaline, and it thrives in exactly the kind of moderately hard, neutral-to-alkaline water — pH roughly 7.0–8.0 — that suits Rift Lake fishes; it has been bred successfully in hard pH 7.8 tap water. Temperature in the mid-20s °C (about 75–81 °F) matches the wild springs. Assuming you intend to breed it, be aware of the well-documented tendency toward male-heavy broods in harder water; some keepers deliberately soften and lower the pH a little when raising fry to even the sex ratio, though the evidence is anecdotal.

Give it a planted tank — and accept that it will eat the plants. The fish is an avid grazer of Vallisneria and other soft macrophytes in the wild, so either supply tough or expendable greenery or feed enough vegetable matter to spare the décor. A varied diet built around a quality vegetable- or spirulina-based flake or pellet, supplemented with blanched greens and the occasional frozen invertebrate, keeps colour and condition high; an excess of rich protein foods does this primarily herbivorous fish no favours. Sand or fine gravel, some rockwork or wood to break sightlines, and good filtration with clear, well-oxygenated water round out the setup.

Tankmates should be chosen for temperament and water compatibility. The species has been combined successfully with calmer Lake Victoria basin haplochromines and, because the water parameters overlap, with Lake Tanganyika fishes such as Cyprichromis and Synodontis catfish; their dissimilar appearance reduces rivalry. Avoid pairing it with boisterous Malawi mbuna, and avoid keeping multiple males in cramped quarters. The chief husbandry mistakes are treating it as a soft-water Congo fish, underestimating its appetite for plants, and crowding too many males together.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Thoracochromis brauschi as Least Concern (assessed 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants, published 2010). The assessment notes that although the species is a narrow-range endemic of the Fwa, its population within that system shows no evidence of decline and faces no major species-specific threat, and it carries no CITES listing. That said, 'Least Concern' should be read against an extremely small total range — the entire Fwa system is only a few square kilometres of spring-fed water, and the same handful of endemic fishes recur nowhere else. The Fwa was recognised as a Key Biodiversity Area in 2024, and the documented pressures there are real and local: shifting cultivation and charcoal production are stripping the surrounding gallery forest, increasing erosion into the valley; artisanal palm-oil processing fouls plant beds along the shore with discarded shells and acidic foam; and newly introduced fine-mesh (mosquito-net) fishing removes juveniles. None of these is yet shown to threaten the species at a population level, but for a fish confined to a single karst spring system the margin is thin — which is precisely why Thoracochromis brauschi is listed by the hobbyist CARES Preservation Program, and why its captive-bred lines are a meaningful insurance against loss of so localised an endemic.
