Thoracochromis demeusii is a small, little-known haplochromine cichlid of the lower Congo River, recorded from the swift reach between Luozi and Matadi and from the Malebo (Stanley) Pool above the rapids. Described from the Congo in 1899, it spent most of its taxonomic life under Haplochromis and is still listed that way by some authorities, but it is conventionally placed in Thoracochromis, the genus Greenwood erected in 1979 for African riverine haplochromines. Like its relatives it is a maternal mouthbrooder, and the form that reaches the aquarium trade — sometimes labelled 'Blue Lip' — is one of the few Congo-basin 'haps' a hobbyist is ever likely to encounter.

Taxonomy & naming

George Albert Boulenger described this fish in 1899 as Paratilapia demeusii, in the fifth fascicle of the Annales du Musée du Congo, one of a run of papers ("Poissons nouveaux du Congo") in which he worked through the rich collections then arriving in Brussels and London from the Congo Free State. The description rests on a single specimen — the unique holotype, now BMNH 1899.6.28.25 in the Natural History Museum, London — figured on plate 45. The stated type locality is "Bangala" (Bangalas) on the upper Congo, but Thys van den Audenaerde (1964) judged this almost certainly a labelling error; the species is in fact known from the lower river, and that disjunction has shadowed the name ever since. Over the following century the fish was shuffled through the catch-all genera that successive workers used for African haplochromines: it was long carried as Haplochromis demeusii, and at one point traded under the name Ctenochromis polli. Peter Humphry Greenwood's 1979 revision of the haplochromine cichlids split the unwieldy genus Haplochromis into a series of smaller genera, and demeusii is generally referred to Thoracochromis, his genus for the riverine and non-lacustrine haplochromines of the Nile, Congo and southern-African systems. The placement is not universally accepted — the Catalog of Fishes still lists the species as a valid Haplochromis, and authors such as van Oijen and colleagues (CLOFFA, 1991) and Wamuini Lunkayilakio & Vreven (2010) keep it in quotation-marked 'Haplochromis' to flag the unresolved generic boundaries. The genus assignment of the lower-Congo haplochromines remains genuinely unsettled.

Morphology

Thoracochromis demeusii is a small cichlid. FishBase gives a maximum of 5 in total length for the type material, while keepers of the aquarium form report males reaching only about 4 in with females smaller — the usual haplochromine pattern in which the figure from a preserved type and the size of living tank fish do not perfectly agree. The body is the typical moderately elongate, laterally compressed haplochromine shape, built for a generalist life in flowing water rather than for any one specialised niche. Mature males of the traded 'Blue Lip' form develop a frontal hump (a nuchal gibbosity) on the forehead as they age, along with slightly more pointed unpaired fins and increased dark speckling over the flanks; in breeding condition the male's throat and lip region can flush a vivid red. As in most haplochromines the anal fin of the male carries an egg-spot (ocellus) — in this species reportedly a single spot — though work on the fish suggests the spot plays little functional role in its spawning. Sexual dimorphism is therefore real but modest: males grow larger, hump-headed and more colourful, females stay plainer and more rounded in the belly when ripe. The 'Blue Lip' label refers to the bluish cast of the lips, but as the cichlid taxonomist Mary Bailey has cautioned, blue lips are so common across haplochromines that they make a poor diagnostic character, and the blue-lipped fish in the trade may simply be juvenile demeusii.

Habitat

The species belongs to the lower Congo River, the dramatic 350-km stretch below Malebo (Stanley) Pool where the river drops some 919 ft through the Crystal Mountains in a chain of more than thirty cataracts on its way to Matadi and the Atlantic. FishBase places it specifically in the reach between Luozi and Matadi, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with records also from Stanley Pool above the rapids; the range sits within the Freshwater Ecoregion of the World known as the Lower Congo Rapids, an ecoregion famous among ichthyologists for an endemic fish fauna shaped by some of the most powerful river hydraulics on Earth. The lower Congo alternates between narrow, deep gorges only a couple of hundred metres wide and broader, calmer two-kilometre stretches, all of it running swiftly; demeusii, as a small haplochromine rather than a rapids specialist, most likely occupies the quieter marginal and tributary waters and the calmer pools rather than the central torrent. FishBase records it as a benthopelagic freshwater fish over a depth range of about 0–23 ft, in a tropical regime of roughly 75–79 °F. No detailed in-situ chemistry has been published for demeusii itself, but the lower-Congo affluents that hold related haplochromines (for example the Inkisi system, where 'Haplochromis' snoeksi was found) run soft, near-neutral and warm — measured there at pH 6.5–7.2, hardness 2–5 °dGH and temperatures around 72–79 °F — a fair guide to the kind of water this fish inhabits.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study of Thoracochromis demeusii has been published, and FishBase carries no gut-content data; its trophic level is given only as a modelled estimate of about 3.3, the value expected for a small generalist haplochromine. The genus and the wider riverine-haplochromine assemblage are opportunistic micro-omnivores, taking small benthic invertebrates, insect larvae, crustaceans, plant and algal material and whatever else the substrate and water column offer. The behaviour of the aquarium form bears this out: keepers report that it readily eats bloodworms, Daphnia, Cyclops, prepared flakes and pellets and filamentous algae, and that it will take small fishes such as danios if it can catch them. That last detail marks it as a fish with a predatory streak rather than a strict micro-grazer — a flexible, bottom-and-midwater forager typical of the haplochromine generalists that have radiated so successfully across African fresh waters.

Mating

Thoracochromis demeusii is, like essentially all haplochromines, a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder with no pair bond. The male takes on his fullest colour and his frontal hump in breeding condition and holds a small territory, into which he displays to and courts passing females; the red flush over his throat and lips is part of that courtship signalling. An aquarist who spawned the fish likened its courtship behaviour to that of the well-studied Astatotilapia burtoni, the model haplochromine of the Lake Tanganyika basin — the same lateral display, quivering and circling on a small male court. The anal-fin egg-spot, a single ocellus in this species, is part of the standard haplochromine spawning toolkit, where such spots typically draw the female's attention to the male's vent as she collects the eggs, although observers of demeusii note the spot appears to serve little real function here. After spawning the male plays no further part; all parental investment falls to the female.

Breeding

Breeding follows the maternal-mouthbrooding template of the genus, confirmed for demeusii both by FishBase ("mouthbrooding by females") and by hobbyist spawnings. The female lays a modest clutch on a cleared surface and takes the eggs up into her mouth, where they are fertilised — drawn in toward the male's anal-fin egg-spot in the classic haplochromine manner — and then incubated in her buccal cavity through hatching and the early free-swimming stage. No clutch count has been published specifically for this species; riverine haplochromines of its size typically carry only a few dozen eggs (on the order of 20–60), far fewer than a substrate-spawning cichlid of similar length, the trade-off for the security of oral incubation. The female fasts or eats little while brooding and continues to shelter the fry in her mouth for some days after they become free-swimming, flushing them out to forage and gathering them back at any disturbance. The fish has been spawned in captivity — at least one dealer reported breeding it in his tanks — but it is bred rarely enough that no detailed account of incubation time or fry development has entered the hobby literature.

In the aquarium

Thoracochromis demeusii is a genuine rarity in the hobby. It is not bred on any scale and reaches the trade only as occasional wild or wild-derived imports of the 'Blue Lip' form, sold by specialist dealers and Congo-cichlid enthusiasts rather than stocked as a staple; one UK retailer offered youngsters at around 12.50 each when a batch came in. For a keeper who does find it, husbandry should follow the soft, warm, well-oxygenated profile of its lower-Congo home. A tank of moderate size suits a fish that tops out near 4 in — a footprint of around 35.5–47 in with a single male and several females is sensible, giving subordinate fish room to escape the territorial male. A biotope setup serves it well: a sand substrate, plenty of rounded rock and bogwood to break sightlines and provide territory boundaries, robust plants that tolerate the warmth, and clean, oxygen-rich water with gentle to moderate flow that echoes the moving water it comes from. Target water in the range pH 6.0–7.5, moderate hardness (around 6–10 °dGH), and a temperature near 77 °F (77 °F); the species' documented thermal band runs roughly 75–79 °F. Feeding is undemanding — it accepts bloodworm, Daphnia, Cyclops, flake and pellet, and grazes filamentous algae — but its willingness to eat small tankmates such as danios means companions should be chosen with that predatory streak in mind. As a mouthbrooding hap it shows the usual male territoriality, best managed with a harem ratio and enough cover. The honest summary is that this is a fish for the dedicated Congo-cichlid hobbyist: rewarding and historically interesting, but seldom available and little documented in cultivation.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses this species (as Haplochromis demeusii) as Vulnerable under criterion D2, in an assessment by T. Moelants dated 16 February 2009, with the population trend recorded as unknown. The D2 listing reflects a very restricted area of occupancy and few known localities rather than any documented decline: the fish is known only from the lower Congo around the Luozi–Matadi reach and Stanley Pool, a small footprint that leaves it exposed to any localised, plausible threat that could act over a short time. It carries no CITES listing. The lower Congo is at once a stronghold of endemism — of roughly 129 fish species recorded from the rapids, about a third are found nowhere else — and a poorly surveyed, under-protected region whose biota, in the DRC's own national biodiversity planning, is flagged as among the most in need of study. Broad pressures on the system include the prospect of further hydropower development at Inga on the very rapids that define the ecoregion, deforestation and the conversion of lowland forest to wooded savanna across the catchment, and the general difficulty of monitoring or managing fish stocks in a region long disrupted by conflict. None of these is documented as a specific, present threat to Thoracochromis demeusii, but together they are the backdrop against which a narrow-range lower-Congo endemic should be read.
