Hemigrammopetersius urotaenia was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1909, based on syntypes collected from the Kribi River at Efulen in southern Cameroon (syntype series BMNH 1903.7.28.136-139, four specimens held at the Natural History Museum, London). The original binomial was Hemigrammopetersius urotaenia; the species was later moved to the genus Phenacogrammus, which accommodates a number of small-bodied West and Central African alestids.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Hemigrammopetersius urotaenia (Boulenger, 1909), the parenthetical authority indicating that Boulenger's original name was published under a different genus. Phenacogrammus belongs to the family Alestidae, the African characiform tetras, a group convergent in form with the New World characids but representing an independent radiation. Within the genus, H. urotaenia is one of several mid-sized species from the Lower Guinea ichthyofaunal province.

Morphology

Feeding

As an active species occupying the mid to lower water column, it feeds readily at most water levels and does not require specialised feeding strategies.
Mating
Like other alestid tetras, Hemigrammopetersius urotaenia is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care. Specific courtship documentation for H. urotaenia itself is sparse, but the genus pattern — shared across most small alestids — involves multiple brief spawning drives in which a male and female press close together and release eggs and sperm simultaneously before separating. Breeding
Hemigrammopetersius urotaenia has not been widely bred in captivity, and detailed breeding protocols specific to this species are not well established in the hobbyist literature. Based on the biology of congeneric species, breeding would be expected to follow the standard Phenacogrammus pattern: a conditioned pair or small group released into a well-planted, softly lit tank with soft, slightly acidic water produces a clutch of small, semi-adhesive eggs scattered over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops.
For the closely related P. interruptus, females can produce up to approximately 300 eggs in a productive spawn, with eggs hatching after several days at tropical temperatures, depending on water temperature. The fry are initially very small and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Adults will eat both eggs and fry and should be removed or the eggs transferred after spawning. No parental care occurs at any stage.

Hemigrammopetersius urotaenia is rarely available in the mainstream trade and is considered a species for the specialist rather than the general hobbyist market. When kept, care requirements are consistent with other small forest-stream alestids from Lower Guinea: warm water in the range of 72–82 °F, soft to moderately soft water with pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and good filtration with moderate current.
As a schooling species it should be kept in groups of six or more, which reduces individual stress and encourages natural behaviour. A planted aquarium with open swimming space, subdued lighting, and dark substrate suits the species' forest-stream origins and shows its colouration to best advantage. Tankmates should be appropriately sized, non-aggressive fish that share similar water-parameter requirements — other small African tetras, peaceful West African dwarf cichlids, or small West African barbs all make compatible companions. The species' modest size (to around 2.8 in) makes it suitable for a mid-sized community aquarium of 21 US gal or more.
Conservation
Hemigrammopetersius urotaenia is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with an assessment dated 2009. The species' range across three Lower Guinea river systems — the Ntem, the Ogowe, and Rio Muni — provides some distributional resilience compared to more narrowly endemic congeners.
