Taxonomy & naming
Marcusenius ntemensis was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1927, originally from a single specimen collected in the Ntem River of southern Cameroon; the parenthetical authority reflects that the species has since been reassigned to its current genus under standard zoological convention. It belongs to the family Mormyridae, within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues: a scattered, deep-time radiation of fishes found on four continents — South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia — united not by any shared modern habitat but by that toothed lingual bone, and numbered among the most ancient lineages of living teleosts. The Mormyridae are an exclusively African family, every member weakly electric, and entirely convergent with — not related to — the electric knifefishes of South America (order Gymnotiformes), which evolved an equivalent electric sense independently on the opposite side of the Atlantic.
A later-described nominal species, Marcusenius conicephalus, was subsequently placed in synonymy with this one; because ntemensis is the earlier-published name, the rule of priority makes it the senior, valid name, the position followed by the Catalog of Fishes. FishBase further flags Marcusenius ntemensis as a species in need of taxonomic revision: molecular phylogenetic work has found it is not closely related to other species currently grouped in Marcusenius, hinting that the genus as presently defined may not be a natural, single-ancestor group. The genus name Marcusenius itself was erected by the American ichthyologist Theodore Gill in 1862 and is thought to honour a naturalist named Marcusen, though the fuller biographical record behind the dedication is not clearly documented in accessible sources. The species epithet ntemensis is a straightforward Latin toponym, "-ensis" (belonging to) attached to "Ntem," naming the type-locality river directly.
Morphology
Marcusenius ntemensis shows the general mormyrid build: a laterally compressed body, a small, close-set mouth, and a caudal peduncle housing the tail-mounted electric organ that defines the family.
