Hemigrammopetersius major is a large African tetra from the river basins of Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, reaching nearly 10 cm standard length — one of the more substantial members of its genus. Collected from the Dja, Nyong, Ntem, and Sanaga river drainages, it occupies forest streams and rivers that flow into the middle Congo basin or the Atlantic coast of Central Africa. Although rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby, it shares the genus with the popular Congo tetra (P. interruptus) and carries the same graceful build and translucent flanks characteristic of the alestid tetras.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemigrammopetersius major was originally described by the Belgian ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1903, hence the parenthetical authority — the species has been moved at least once from its original genus placement since description. The valid name is governed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong), which places it in Phenacogrammus, a genus of African tetras in the family Alestidae.

The family Alestidae — sometimes called African characins — encompasses the diverse tetra-like fishes of sub-Saharan Africa, including the giant tigerfish (Hydrocynus) at one extreme and the small, jewel-like Congo tetras (Phenacogrammus) at the other. Within Alestidae, Phenacogrammus is characterised by a moderately deep, compressed body, an adipose fin, and the distinctive finnage of larger species. Hemigrammopetersius major is the largest commonly referenced species in the genus, the specific epithet major (Latin: larger, greater) directly referencing its size relative to congeners.

Morphology

The scales are relatively large and reflective, giving the flanks a silvery or faintly iridescent appearance in good light.

Being a schooling species, a group of six or more would allow natural social behaviour and reduce individual stress.
