Knodus motatanensis is a small characid minnow reaching 4.7 cm total length, endemic to the Maracaibo Lake basin of northwestern Venezuela. Described from the Motatán river system in 1944 and assessed by the IUCN as Vulnerable, this unassuming benthopelagic fish illustrates how even modest, range-restricted characids face growing pressure in a basin undergoing rapid agricultural and industrial change.

Taxonomy & naming

Knodus motatanensis was described by Leonard Peter Schultz in 1944, originally placed as Bryconamericus beta motatanensis — a subspecies of Bryconamericus beta — based on specimens collected at the Río San Juan at a bridge south of Mene Grande, within the Motatán drainage of the Maracaibo Lake basin in Venezuela. That original trinomial is now treated as a full species synonym; the valid name under the Catalog of Fishes is Knodus motatanensis Schultz, 1944.

The genus Bryconamericus is a diverse Neotropical characid group distributed widely across South and Central America, particularly in Andean-slope and piedmont river systems. Members are small, slender, silver-bodied fishes that can be superficially difficult to distinguish without meristic counts — they are the "difficult middle" of Characidae, and molecular and morphological revisions continue to reorganise the genus. Knodus motatanensis belongs to the Maracaibo basin radiation of the genus, and its close relatives include other Venezuelan endemics of the same drainage.

This fish was long listed as Bryconamericus motatanensis; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Knodus, and the current combination Knodus motatanensis is followed here.

Morphology

Like most Bryconamericus, this is a compact, fusiform characid with a silvery body and the typical lateral line and scale pattern of the genus. Maximum recorded length is 1.9 in total length — a small fish even by the standards of its genus. The body is moderately slender and slightly compressed laterally, with a relatively large eye, small terminal mouth, and the single adipose fin characteristic of most characids.

No detailed published morphometric data from the original description are reproduced in available secondary sources, and the species lacks a comprehensive modern revision highlighting diagnostic characters. In the field and in collections it is distinguished from sympatric Bryconamericus by meristic counts (scale rows, fin-ray counts) and proportional measurements. Coloration in life is not well documented in accessible literature; preserved specimens typically show the pale silvery-tan appearance common to small Neotropical characids of open water.

Habitat

Knodus motatanensis is a freshwater, benthopelagic species restricted to the Maracaibo Lake basin of northwestern Venezuela. Its confirmed range spans multiple tributaries draining into this basin, including the Río Motatán, Río San Juan, Río San Pedro, Río Jimelles, and Río Catatumbo, as well as the lake itself. These rivers drain from the Venezuelan Andes and their foothills through the departments of Trujillo, Sucre, Monagas, and Zulia before entering Lago Maracaibo.

The Motatán system — the type locality — flows through lowland plains and piedmont valleys, supporting warm tropical freshwaters typical of northwestern Venezuela. As a benthopelagic species it occupies both mid-water and near-bottom zones of rivers and streams, likely preferring shaded or vegetated margins over open fast current. The Maracaibo basin is ecologically distinct from the adjacent Orinoco and Magdalena drainages, and several of its small characids are narrow endemics found nowhere else.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies specific to Knodus motatanensis are not available in accessible literature, but the feeding biology can be reasonably inferred from the genus. Bryconamericus species are generally opportunistic omnivores, consuming small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, and worms — along with algae, plant fragments, and detritus picked from the substrate and water column.

As a benthopelagic fish operating in both open water and near-bottom zones, it likely forages at multiple levels, taking drift items carried by current and gleaning organisms from submerged surfaces. In captivity, if kept, it would be expected to accept a wide variety of small prepared foods, live and frozen invertebrates, and vegetable matter without difficulty.

Mating

No specific reproductive observations have been published for Knodus motatanensis. Within the family Characidae, open egg-scattering is the ancestral and overwhelmingly prevalent reproductive mode, and Bryconamericus species follow this pattern. Spawning involves the scattering of adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over the substrate, with no parental care provided by either sex.

Seasonal spawning tied to flood-pulse cues — rising water levels and increased food availability during the wet season — is typical of small Neotropical characids in Andean-slope drainages. Males likely display alongside females and engage in brief, active spawning chases, as documented in related genera. Females scatter small numbers of eggs that adhere to plants or settle among gravel and debris.

Breeding

Knodus motatanensis has not been reported in the aquarium literature as a species bred in captivity, and no dedicated breeding account exists in accessible sources. Based on the reproductive biology of closely related Bryconamericus and small characids generally, captive breeding would be expected to follow the typical open-spawning pattern: conditioned adults scatter adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, after which the adults should be separated to prevent egg predation.

Incubation at tropical temperatures of 72–79 °F would likely take 24–48 hours, with fry becoming free-swimming within a few days of hatching. First foods for the small fry would include infusoria or commercial liquid fry food, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp. The species is not known to be established in the ornamental trade, so captive breeding data remain absent from the hobby record.

In the aquarium

Knodus motatanensis is not established in the ornamental aquarium trade and is unlikely to be encountered by hobbyists outside specialist collections or research institutions. As a small, active characid of up to 1.9 in, it would in principle suit a modestly sized planted aquarium with soft to moderately hard, warm tropical water, kept in a school of at least six individuals to express natural shoaling behaviour.

Water conditions reflecting the Venezuelan piedmont rivers of the Maracaibo basin — temperatures of approximately 72–82 °F and near-neutral pH — would be appropriate. The species presents no known husbandry difficulty beyond its general unavailability. Its principal aquarium relevance is as a conservation ambassador: a little-known endemic that rarely, if ever, makes it into the hobby, underscoring how much of Neotropical fish diversity remains outside normal trade channels.

Conservation

Knodus motatanensis is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List in an assessment published in September 2021 by Douglas Rodríguez Olarte (assessment under IUCN UK 2021-2). The species is known exclusively from the Maracaibo Lake basin in Venezuela, a drainage that faces substantial anthropogenic pressure: agricultural runoff, oil industry activity, deforestation of riparian zones, and water extraction all degrade the rivers in which this species lives.

As a small, range-restricted endemic with no known populations outside the Maracaibo basin, Knodus motatanensis has limited ability to recover from local extirpation or recolonise degraded reaches. It is not recorded in the ornamental trade, so aquarium collection is not a known pressure. The primary conservation concern is habitat quality in the Motatán, San Juan, San Pedro, Jimelles, and Catatumbo rivers and the health of the broader lake ecosystem into which they drain. No specific conservation programme targeting this species is documented in available literature.
