Psalidodon santae is a small characin endemic to the São Francisco River basin of Brazil, reaching around 7.1 cm standard length and historically recorded from karst stream habitats in Minas Gerais state. Originally described by Carl Eigenmann in 1907 as Hemigrammus santae, it was transferred to Hyphessobrycon the following year. The species is assessed as Data Deficient by the IUCN, reflecting sparse baseline data rather than confirmed population health, and it remains one of the less-studied members of its speciose genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Psalidodon santae was first described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1907 under the original combination Hemigrammus santae, with type material from the São Francisco River drainage of Brazil. The following year, in 1908, Durbin transferred the species to the genus Hyphessobrycon, where Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes maintains it as a valid name today: Psalidodon santae (Eigenmann, 1907). The parenthetical authority signals that the species was not described in its current genus.

Hyphessobrycon is one of the largest and most heterogeneous genera in the family Characidae, containing well over 150 described species. Many of its members are familiar aquarium fish, and the genus has been subject to ongoing revision as molecular and morphological studies clarify relationships among small characins. The exact phylogenetic position of P. santae within the genus has not been fully resolved in published literature accessible in the cache; it shares the São Francisco basin with numerous other small tetras and characins, including Astyanax fasciatus, Hemigrammus marginatus, and Serrapinnus piaba.

Morphology

Psalidodon santae reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 2.8 in, placing it among the mid-sized members of its genus — larger than neon-tetra-class species but smaller than the largest Hyphessobrycon. Like other members of the family Characidae, it is a laterally compressed, moderately slender fish with the characteristic adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fin.

Detailed external colour descriptions for this species are sparse in the available literature. As with many Hyphessobrycon, it likely bears a lateral stripe or humeral spot — structural features common to the genus — but precise colour pattern data were not captured in the sources reviewed for this article. The species is benthopelagic in habit, occupying the lower to mid water column in its native streams.

Habitat

Psalidodon santae is endemic to the São Francisco River basin in Brazil, with confirmed records from karst stream habitats in Minas Gerais state. The species is recorded as sympatric with Astyanax fasciatus, Hemigrammus marginatus, and Serrapinnus piaba in these habitats, pointing to mixed small-characin assemblages typical of clear, well-oxygenated Neotropical stream environments. The São Francisco is an isolated Brazilian river drainage with high endemism; its ichthyofauna includes numerous species found nowhere else, and P. santae is among them.

Feeding

Psalidodon santae is an opportunistic omnivore. Studies of resource partitioning among coexisting small characins in Neotropical rivers — including research by Delariva and Neves (2020) on morphological traits correlated with diet in mixed assemblages — document food items for similar sympatric species that include algae, aquatic insects, terrestrial insects, plant remains, seeds, and detritus. P. santae is implicated in such dietary partitioning in the São Francisco basin.

In practice, small Hyphessobrycon species in captivity accept a broad range of foods. A varied diet of good-quality flake or micro-pellets supplemented with frozen or live invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm supports condition and colour. As a small, active fish it benefits from multiple small feedings daily rather than a single large meal.

Mating

No specific mating observations have been published for Psalidodon santae in the sources reviewed. As a member of Hyphessobrycon, a genus of open egg-scatterers, it is expected to follow the pattern typical of the group: males court females with fin displays and body movements, and spawning takes place over or among fine-leaved vegetation or other substrate that provides anchorage for adhesive eggs. No pair bond or territory is maintained, and spawning activity in the genus is often correlated with first light.

In mixed-species assemblages in the wild, resource partitioning among congeners likely extends to microhabitat selection during reproduction, though direct documentation for this species is absent from available literature.

Breeding

Psalidodon santae has not been reported as a commonly bred aquarium species, and detailed captive breeding accounts are not documented in the sources available for this article. Its care requirements, inferred from genus-level knowledge and its recorded wild habitat, would align with those of other mid-sized Hyphessobrycon: a peaceful schooling fish best kept in groups of six or more, suited to a well-planted aquarium with subdued lighting and dark substrate to bring out natural colouration.

Water chemistry in its native karst streams ranges from neutral to slightly alkaline (pH 6.3–8.2, averaging 7.2) at around 75 °F (75°F) — parameters that translate to a moderately hard, near-neutral captive setup rather than the very soft, acidic water associated with many Amazonian tetras. It is small enough for a modestly sized community aquarium and is likely compatible with peaceful tankmates of similar dimensions. Given its Data Deficient status and restricted natural range, sourcing captive-bred specimens would be preferable to wild-caught fish when available.

Conservation

Psalidodon santae is listed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with an assessment dated March 2021 reported via FishBase. A DD listing indicates that insufficient information is available to make a reliable assessment of the species' extinction risk — it does not imply that the species is not threatened, only that the baseline data needed to assign a category are lacking.

The species is endemic to the São Francisco River basin, one of Brazil's most hydrologically isolated major drainages. The São Francisco faces ongoing pressures including water diversion for irrigation, hydroelectric development, agricultural runoff, and urbanisation. As a range-restricted endemic in a threatened river system, P. santae may be more vulnerable than its current assessment suggests.
