A modestly sized characid of the Paraguay River basin in South America, Psalidodon alleni is one of the many small tetras scattered across lowland drainages that rarely make their way into the aquarium trade. Described by Carl H. Eigenmann and W.L. McAtee in 1907, it is known primarily from museum records and systematic work on the large and complicated Astyanax complex. The species has received little individual study, and for most hobbyists it remains an obscure entry in the genus — notable mainly as an example of the extraordinary diversity within one of South America's most species-rich characid lineages.

Taxonomy & naming

Psalidodon alleni was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and W.L. McAtee in 1907, from material collected in the Paraguay River basin of South America. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences) records the valid name as Psalidodon alleni Eigenmann & McAtee, 1907 and treats it as a valid species within the genus Astyanax.

Modern molecular and morphological work on the Characidae has led some authorities to transfer many Astyanax species — including this one — to the reinstated genus Psalidodon, originally erected by Eigenmann in 1911. Under that arrangement the species becomes Psalidodon alleni. The name Psalidodon derives from the Greek psalis (scissors) combined with odon (tooth), referring to the characteristic nipper-like dentition of these fish. However, since the Catalog of Fishes remains the governing authority for valid names on this site, the name Psalidodon alleni is retained here; users should be aware that current FishBase records list the species under Psalidodon alleni.

The specific epithet honours Joel Asaph Allen (1838–1921), the distinguished American zoologist and ornithologist who served at the American Museum of Natural History and made major contributions to the study of North and South American vertebrates.

This fish was long listed as Astyanax alleni; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Psalidodon, and the current combination Psalidodon alleni is followed here.

Morphology

Psalidodon alleni is a small to moderately sized tetra reaching up to 3.5 in standard length (SL) in males and unsexed specimens, placing it near the upper end of the size range for commonly encountered Astyanax-group species. It displays the typical body plan of the genus: a laterally compressed, oval-profiled fish with a blunt snout, a relatively large eye, and a deeply forked tail.

A diagnostic meristic feature is the anal fin, which carries no spines and 39 to 41 soft rays — a comparatively high ray count within the genus. The overall colouration, as with many Astyanax relatives, is a silvery body with a dark midlateral stripe running from behind the head to the base of the caudal fin, often terminating in a dark caudal spot. Detailed colour and morphometric data for this species in life are sparse in the literature, and much of what is known comes from preserved museum specimens.

Habitat

The species is recorded from the Paraguay River basin of South America, a vast lowland drainage covering parts of Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina. The Paraguay basin drains the Pantanal — one of the world's largest tropical wetlands — and supports an extraordinarily rich freshwater fish fauna.

Psalidodon alleni is documented as a freshwater, pelagic species occupying tropical water conditions. Beyond these broad parameters the ecological data are sparse; no detailed habitat surveys specific to this species are available in the accessible literature. Like most Astyanax relatives it likely inhabits a range of lentic and lotic environments within the basin, including rivers, floodplain lakes, and swampy margins, as is characteristic of other members of this wide-ranging genus in the region.

Feeding

No published diet study specific to Psalidodon alleni has been located. Based on the feeding ecology of closely related Astyanax species in comparable South American lowland systems, the species is likely an opportunistic omnivore taking small invertebrates, microcrustaceans, insect larvae, and plant or algal material depending on seasonal availability.

In an aquarium context, fish of this genus are typically undemanding and accept quality dried foods — flake and small pellets — readily. Supplementing with frozen or live small invertebrates such as Daphnia, cyclops, or brine shrimp is beneficial for conditioning and sustained health.

Mating

No reproductive or behavioural data specific to Psalidodon alleni have been published. Based on the biology of Astyanax and Psalidodon species more broadly, the species is assumed to follow the standard characid pattern: egg scattering over submerged vegetation or substrate with no parental care after spawning.

Males in the wider genus typically court females with brief chasing displays, and spawning occurs with the pair releasing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over open substrate. These are broadcast spawners; once eggs are shed neither parent guards them.

Breeding

Psalidodon alleni has not been reported as established in the aquarium hobby, and no captive breeding accounts have been located. Based on the reproductive mode typical of the genus, breeding in a well-conditioned aquarium would be expected to follow patterns documented for other Astyanax relatives: egg scattering over fine-leaved vegetation or spawning mops, with the adults removed afterward to prevent egg predation.

Incubation times and fry requirements would depend on temperature but generally fall in line with other small characids — hatching within 24 to 72 hours at tropical temperatures, with fry requiring fine first foods such as rotifers or commercial liquid fry diets before advancing to nauplii and finely powdered foods. Until the species becomes available in the trade and captive accounts are published, all breeding guidance remains extrapolated from related taxa.

In the aquarium

Psalidodon alleni is not established in the aquarium hobby and is unlikely to be encountered in the trade. The species is known from systematic ichthyological collections rather than commercial import, and no husbandry accounts specific to it have been published.

Were it to become available, the broad parameters for keeping Astyanax relatives would apply: a spacious aquarium with room to school, tropical temperatures broadly in the range documented for the Paraguay basin, neutral to slightly acidic or alkaline water depending on collection locality, and a varied diet. As a modestly sized, likely schooling characid, it would best be kept in a group rather than individually. Any aquarist obtaining specimens from a research or specialist source should prioritise documenting husbandry observations, as the species is poorly known.

Conservation

Psalidodon alleni has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; it is listed as Not Evaluated. The lack of an assessment reflects the species' low profile in systematic and conservation literature rather than a definitive judgement on its status.

The Paraguay River basin, where the species is recorded, is subject to ongoing pressures including agricultural expansion, water management modifications, and pollution associated with intensive farming in the Pantanal margins. However, the Paraguay basin's vast extent and hydrological complexity mean that many smaller fish species within it persist across wide areas. Without a targeted population survey or range assessment for P. alleni specifically, its conservation situation remains unknown.
