The Sangha is the great right-bank tributary that drains the rainforest where Cameroon, the Central African Republic and the Republic of Congo run together — savanna headwaters in the north giving way to some of the densest closed-canopy forest in Africa before the river slides into the swamps of the Cuvette Centrale and meets the mainstem Congo. Its lower swamp-forest waters run the color of strong tea, deoxygenated and acidic enough to register a pH of 3.5, and the forest they thread is largely intact: the Sangha Trinational, a World Heritage park spanning all three countries, sits over the heart of the basin. The fishes here belong to the Congo fauna, sorted by a single waterfall.

Geography & hydrology

The Sangha ecoregion (FEOW 534) follows the watershed of the Sangha River basin across Cameroon, the Central African Republic (CAR) and the Republic of Congo (ROC), reaching from the Mambéré headwaters in the north, on the Cameroon-CAR border, almost down to Malebo Pool in southern ROC. The Congo basin watershed, running roughly along the Congo-Gabon border, marks the western edge; the Massif du Chaillu defines the southwestern corner and the headwaters of the Boumba the northwestern extent. The Kadey and its tributaries make up the northern headwaters; the Kadey joins the Sangha in southernmost CAR along the Cameroon border, and further south the Ngoko flows down the Cameroon-ROC boundary to meet the Sangha at Ouesso. From there the river runs south through the Cuvette Centrale to the Congo. Several other rivers drain the central and southern parts of the ecoregion and likewise end up in the mainstem Congo — the Likouala and its tributary the Kouyou, plus the Alima, Nkeni and Lefini (Hughes & Hughes 1992; FEOW 534).

The rivers here are old. They are permanent, and they predate the major earth movements of the Miocene; the flat central Cuvette Centrale belongs to the ancient continental Congo basin, flooded by the sea during the Mesozoic and then accentuated when the surrounding land was uplifted (Beadle 1981; FEOW 534). One waterfall does most of the work of organizing the fauna. The Dja, an upper tributary, is cut off from the Ngoko-Sangha by the Nki Falls in Cameroon, and the fish above the falls resemble those of the Nyong and the other Southern Gulf of Guinea drainages rather than the pure Congo fauna below. For that reason the upper Dja is assigned to the Southern Gulf of Guinea ecoregion (533) and left out of the Sangha entirely (FEOW 534).

Gauged at Ouesso since 1948, the Sangha runs to an equatorial rhythm of two floods and two low-water spells: high flows around October–January and again in April–May, low water in February–March and again from June through September. That double pulse, and the long dry stretches between, shortens the navigation season on a river that depends on depth for transport. Flows have also shifted within living memory — discharge at Ouesso was distinctly higher from 1948 to 1970 than in the decades since, part of a broader weakening of Congo-tributary flows after a hydrological break around 1970 (Laraque et al. 1998; Bricquet/Laraque, recent-evolution studies).

Water & habitat

The defining habitat of the central and southern ecoregion is swamp. Permanent swamps increasingly take over the landscape downstream, and stands of Raphia palm line the main Sangha as it crosses the Cuvette Centrale toward the Congo. The water in these swamps is the extreme end of the blackwater spectrum — deep brown to black, deoxygenated, and highly acidic, with pH measured between 3.5 and 5.2 (Hughes & Hughes 1992; Laraque et al. 1998). The Likouala and Kouyou south of the Sangha also run through extensive swamp forest, and large mats of floating grass are common within the river channels. Further south, along the Alima, Nkeni and Lefini, the picture becomes a patchwork of marshy savanna, boggy steppe and seasonally flooded swamp forest (Hughes & Hughes 1992; Sayer et al. 1992; FEOW 534).

Water chemistry across the basin is anything but uniform. Laraque and colleagues, sampling Congolese tributaries, found a wide span of biogeochemical signatures keyed to what the rivers drain: forested catchments yield highly diluted blackwaters — low turbidity, low pH, low conductivity, low total alkalinity, stained by humic and tannic acids leached from waterlogged leaf litter and peat — while savanna catchments carry a different, less acidic signature. The lithology and vegetation of each sub-catchment leave their own mark on the water, so a single 'Sangha water' does not exist; the river is a composite of forest blackwater, savanna runoff and the still, oxygen-starved sheets standing under the Raphia (Laraque et al. 1998).

That acidity and low oxygen are not incidental. Soft, warm, weakly buffered forest water sets hard limits on what can live in it, and the fishes of the swamp interior are the ones equipped for low pH and thin oxygen — small, often air-tolerant or surface-oriented species that exploit the shaded, structure-rich margins of leaf litter, submerged wood and root tangles rather than open current. Along the river proper, sandy beds and faster reaches over harder substrate offer a different set of niches. The riparian swamp forests of the upper Sangha and its tributaries range from a few meters to as much as 4 mi wide, so the productive, food-rich flooded-forest edge — where so much of the fish feeding and breeding happens — is a broad band rather than a thin fringe (Hughes & Hughes 1992; FEOW 534).

The cichlid fauna

The Sangha's cichlids are Congo-basin fishes, and the FEOW description is blunt about it: below the Nki Falls the fauna is 'pure Congo.' The atlas roster reflects that mix of widespread Congo species and a few forms shared with the Cameroon drainages along the ecoregion's northern and western rim (FEOW 534).

The headline fish is Heterochromis multidens — not for its looks but for its place on the tree. It is the only species in its genus and the sole member of the subfamily Heterochromidinae, a lineage so anatomically odd that for decades morphologists argued it sat closer to the New World cichlids than to the African ones, before broader molecular work pulled it back toward an African (if still deeply isolated) position (Schwarzer et al. 2009 and later phylogenies). It is endemic to the Congo basin, recorded from scattered localities including the Likouala, the Sangha (with the Dja in Cameroon), the Ubangi, the Itimbiri, the Aruwimi and the Tshuapa. A primitive, large-mouthed predator turning up in this forest river is a reminder of how old and how relictual the central Congo fauna can be (FishBase; CRC). At the opposite end of the size scale sits Congochromis sabinae, a dwarf cichlid under about 2 in that Anton Lamboj described (originally as a Nanochromis) and named for his daughter Sabina. It lives in small, shaded rainforest streams, forms monogamous pairs, and is recorded from the Sangha, Alima and Likouala drainages — exactly the swamp-forest tributaries that dominate this ecoregion — as well as the Lukenie and the upper Ogooué (Lamboj 2005; Seriously Fish; FishBase).

The roster's tilapiines trace the basin's edges. Congolapia crassa belongs to a genus erected by Dunz, Vreven and Schliewen in 2012 for central-Congo cichlids pulled out of the old catch-all Tilapia; the genus name is a contraction of Congo and tilapia, and C. crassa ranges through the western-central Congo including the Alima, Lefini and Sangha. Pelmatochromis ocellifer is a middle-Congo cichlid described by Boulenger from Monsembe, the kind of larger, opercular-spotted substrate-spawner the genus is known for. Tylochromis variabilis is one of the sand-sifting, thick-lipped Tylochromis that Stiassny revised — a genus diverse in the Congo and reaching into Cameroon, Tanganyika and West Africa. Two more roster species belong to the Cameroon side of the ecoregion's northern margin: Coptodon nyongana and Sarotherodon mvogoi, both associated with the Nyong and neighboring Cameroonian waters that feed this corner of the basin (Dunz et al. 2012; FishBase; Stiassny on Tylochromis). The Sangha is rated only 'fair' for taxonomic exploration, and recent collecting has already blurred its edges — some fishes once thought endemic to the neighboring Oubangui turn out to be shared with the Sangha — so the cichlid list is better read as a working snapshot than a closed account (FEOW 534).

Conservation

The Sangha is unusual among African river basins in how much of its forest is still standing. At its heart sits the Sangha Trinational (TNS), inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2012, a transboundary complex of three contiguous national parks — Lobéké in Cameroon, Dzanga-Ndoki in CAR and Nouabalé-Ndoki in ROC — covering a legally defined 746,309 hectares, wrapped in a buffer zone of almost 1.79 million more. UNESCO inscribed it precisely because it is not a remnant: the parks remain embedded in a much larger, mostly intact forest landscape, with ecological and evolutionary processes running at a scale that has become rare anywhere on Earth. The river itself is part of that story; the citation singles out the site's wetlands, swamp forests and periodically flooded forests, and names Nile crocodiles and goliath tigerfish among its aquatic predators (UNESCO WHC 1380).

The pressure is real, and it comes mainly from the edges. Elephant poaching for ivory and hunting for the commercial bushmeat trade are the single biggest threat to the property's integrity, and the bushmeat chain — hunters, transporters, middlemen, financiers — runs intensely through the peripheral zones. Most of the buffer is managed for timber, and logging is the multiplier: new logging fronts cut roads into forest that was previously too remote to hunt, and the first documented poacher incursions into the Goualougo Triangle of Nouabalé-Ndoki tracked the arrival of roads and active logging in the adjacent concessions. The core parks are comparatively well controlled, but enforcement varies from one logging concession to the next, and large-scale mining and infrastructure projects planned within 93–124 mi threaten to pull tens of thousands of people into the landscape (IUCN World Heritage Outlook; Frontiers/CARPE).

For the fishes, the threats are indirect but they share a logic. Selective logging and road-building deliver hunters and fishers into previously unreachable swamp-forest reaches, while clearing in the catchment alters runoff, raises sediment loads and degrades the leaf-litter and flooded-forest structure that the small forest cichlids depend on for cover, food and breeding. The acidic blackwaters that make this fauna distinctive are also what make it fragile — soft, weakly buffered water has little capacity to absorb disturbance. The encouraging part is that the Sangha is one of the few large central-African basins where the protective framework already exists at landscape scale: a trinational management committee, a banned-logging core, and a buffer zone explicitly meant to reconcile the livelihoods of local and Indigenous communities, including the BaAka, with keeping the forest — and the river through it — whole (UNESCO WHC 1380; IUCN World Heritage Outlook 2025).
