Taxonomy & naming
Mormyrops oudoti was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Daget in 1954, from a type specimen collected in Bamako, on the Niger River in Mali. It belongs to the family Mormyridae — the elephantnoses and mormyrids — within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues. Osteoglossiformes is a scattered, deep-time radiation spread across four continents (South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia); the mormyrids are the African, weakly electric branch of that order, unrelated to the superficially similar electric knifefishes of South America (order Gymnotiformes), which arrived at the same trick by convergent evolution rather than shared ancestry.
The genus name Mormyrops combines the Greek mormyros, an old name applied to a fish, with -ops, "appearance" or "face" — read together as "mormyrid-looking". The species epithet oudoti is a Latinized patronym: FishBase records that it honors a Monsieur Oudot, said to have collected the type material while in Bamako. GBIF's taxonomic backbone treats Mormyrops oudoti Daget, 1954 as a currently valid name, though the species remains known from only a handful of records.
Morphology
Mormyrops oudoti has the elongate, almost eel-like (anguilliform) body typical of many mormyrids, with a terminal mouth set at the front of the head rather than the underslung or overhung snout seen in some relatives. FishBase gives a maximum recorded size of 4.5 in standard length, based on the type specimen — a modest size for the genus Mormyrops, several of whose other species reach 15.7 in or more, and one, M. anguilloides, tops 5 ft.
As in every mormyrid, the fish's most important organ is one that cannot be seen: an electric organ near the base of the tail generates a continuous, low-voltage, pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD), read by electroreceptors covering the skin and processed by an enlarged cerebellum. Mormyrids have among the highest brain-to-body-mass ratios of any fish group, an adaptation built around that constant stream of electrical information. Because so many small mormyrids are difficult to tell apart by eye, species identification within the genus often leans on the EOD waveform as much as on external anatomy — a caveat that applies to a poorly collected species like M. oudoti as much as to any of its relatives.
Habitat
Mormyrops oudoti is known from the Niger River in West Africa, with its type locality at Bamako, Mali, and further records from Niger River surveys around Niamey, Niger, where a 2023 biodiversity assessment recorded the species as roughly 6.7% of the identified Mormyridae in that stretch of river. Beyond these points the species' range is not well characterized, and it should be treated as narrowly documented rather than confirmed to be either rare or widespread.
Like other river-dwelling mormyrids, it is a demersal freshwater fish, almost certainly living over sand and fine sediment in the turbid, tannin-influenced water typical of Niger basin rivers — the low-visibility conditions in which an electric sense is most useful. No site-specific temperature or pH readings have been published for M. oudoti; general Mormyridae ranges (see "In the aquarium") stand in for measurements that do not exist for this species.
Feeding
No dedicated feeding study exists for Mormyrops oudoti, so its diet is inferred from the well-documented pattern of the family: mormyrids are invertivores that forage over sand and mud for aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans, mostly after dark. Electrolocation — reading distortions in the fish's own electric field caused by nearby prey — lets it hunt effectively where sight would be nearly useless.
The Niger River survey that recorded this species notes that the family's weakly electric organ is used for both navigation and electrolocation in the dark, turbid water typical of the basin, consistent with this general foraging pattern, but it offers no species-specific dietary data for M. oudoti itself.
Mating
Mating behaviour in Mormyrops oudoti has not been documented. In mormyrids generally, the electric organ discharge is thought to double as a courtship and species-recognition signal — because the EOD is close to a personal signature, it may let a fish identify a suitable mate of its own species in water too dark or turbid for visual cues to work. Whether that holds for M. oudoti specifically is untested.
Mormyrid reproduction as a whole is understood to be seasonal and tied to flooding, timed to the rise of river levels that opens flooded margins as spawning habitat. No observation confirms this pattern in M. oudoti, but it is the reasonable working assumption for a Niger basin mormyrid given what is known of its relatives.
Breeding
Breeding in Mormyrops oudoti is essentially undocumented. Mormyrids as a group are seasonal, flood-triggered spawners in the wild, and some species are thought to scatter eggs among flooded vegetation with limited guarding, but the details for most of the family — including this species — are barely known, and captive breeding of mormyrids is rarely if ever achieved.
No aquarium spawning has been reported for M. oudoti, and none would be expected: the species has never been established in the hobby. Anyone attempting to breed it would be working without any prior protocol to follow, in a genus where even sexing individuals reliably is difficult.
In the aquarium
Mormyrops oudoti is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense — it has not been documented in the trade, and this account can only extrapolate from the general, better-documented care requirements of the mormyrid family. At a recorded maximum of 4.5 in SL it is a small species by the standards of its genus, which in principle would suit a modest aquarium better than the true giant Mormyrops, but that is inference from size alone, not from any kept specimen.
Mormyrids as a family want soft to medium-hard, neutral to slightly acidic water (roughly pH 6.0–7.5) at 73–82 °F, dim lighting with shaded cover, and a fine sand substrate they can probe without injuring the snout. They are notably intolerant of copper, formalin, dyes and aquarium salt, so routine medications used casually elsewhere in the hobby can injure or kill them, and doses should be conservative. Given that M. oudoti has no aquarium history at all, anyone encountering it would be working from the family's general rules rather than any species-specific guidance, and should treat it as an experimental, advanced-hobbyist proposition rather than a fish with an established care sheet.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Mormyrops oudoti as Data Deficient, reflecting how little is known about the species: it is recorded from the Niger River at Bamako, Mali (the type locality) and from a 2023 survey near Niamey, Niger, but no population size, trend or detailed range has been established. Data Deficient is not the same as safe — it means there is not enough information to judge the species' status either way.
In the absence of a specific assessment, the general pressures on the Niger River basin — damming, water abstraction for irrigation, sedimentation and pollution from a large and growing human population along the river — are the plausible long-term concerns for a narrowly documented fish like this one, though no data currently ties any population change in M. oudoti specifically to those pressures.
