Taxonomy & naming
Marcusenius moorii was described by the English ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1867. It belongs to the family Mormyridae — the elephantnoses and mormyrids — within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, a scattered and deep-time radiation of freshwater fishes found today across South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia. The order's name and the shared "bonytongue" character refer to a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth (on the tongue) that bites against toothed plates on the roof of the mouth, an ancient feeding mechanism found across this otherwise very diverse group.
The genus Marcusenius honours the naturalist Marcusen, commemorated in a number of mid-19th-century ichthyological names; the species epithet moorii is a Latinised patronym honouring a collector or naturalist surnamed Moore, in the standard 19th-century convention of naming a new species after the person who obtained the type material — the exact individual is not confirmed in the sources consulted here. Mormyridae is a large, almost entirely African family, and many species — including several Marcusenius — are difficult to tell apart by eye and are more reliably distinguished by their electric-organ discharge than by external anatomy.
Morphology
Marcusenius moorii has the compact, laterally compressed body typical of its genus: a small mouth set low on a rounded, blunt head rather than the elongated, trunk-like "schnauzenorgan" chin appendage seen in some other mormyrids (such as Gnathonemus petersii); a single soft dorsal fin set well back on the body, opposite a long-based anal fin; and a small, deeply forked caudal fin on a narrow peduncle. Coloration is a plain silvery-grey to brownish, without bold markings, in keeping with a fish that relies on electrical rather than visual signalling.
Reported maximum size is around 8.3 in, making it a middling species for the genus — neither one of the smallest dwarf mormyrids nor among the larger elephantnoses. As in all mormyrids, the tail carries a weak electric organ (the electrocyte-packed structure in the caudal peduncle) that generates a brief, species-typical pulse discharge. This is paired with an unusually large cerebellum and an electrosensory lateral-line lobe, giving mormyrids one of the highest brain-to-body-mass ratios of any fish group — the physiological basis for their reputation as unusually "intelligent" fish, though that framing is really about processing a rich electrosensory world rather than general problem-solving.
Habitat
This species is a Congo-basin endemic, recorded from the Ogooué and Kouilou-Niari river systems of Gabon and the Republic of the Congo, and more broadly through the lower and middle Congo River system as far as Wagenia Falls, spanning Cameroon, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola. It is a demersal, freshwater species, living close to the bottom in tropical West and Central African rivers and floodplains.
Like most Congo-basin mormyrids it comes from warm, generally soft and only mildly acidic to near-neutral water — often tannin-stained and dim beneath overhanging vegetation, exactly the kind of low-visibility habitat in which an electric sense is most useful. Stable water quality matters more than any single parameter: this is not a fish that tolerates swings in hardness or pollutants well, and captive keeping should aim to mirror the calm, soft, dimly lit conditions of its native rivers rather than any harder or brighter alternative.
Feeding
Marcusenius moorii is a bottom-foraging invertebrate feeder. In the wild it uses its electric sense to probe soft substrate and cover for aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates, feeding mostly under cover of darkness or in the naturally dim light of its Congo-basin habitat rather than in open, bright water.
In the aquarium it should be offered live or frozen invertebrate foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp and other aquatic insect larvae are all readily taken — rather than relying on dry foods, which many mormyrids are slow to accept or ignore outright. As with feeding time in the wild, offering food after the lights dim or go out tends to suit this species' natural rhythm better than a brightly lit daytime feeding.
Mating
Courtship and mate recognition in mormyrids run through the electric organ discharge: each species' pulse pattern is thought to help fish recognise their own kind and, within a species, to signal readiness or status between individuals — a communication channel layered on top of the same electrolocation sense used for foraging. Beyond that broad picture, the courtship behaviour of Marcusenius moorii specifically has not been well documented.
What is known points to seasonal, flood-triggered spawning in the wild, in step with the rise and fall of Congo-basin rivers, rather than to a fixed pairing or year-round breeding pattern. Detailed observations of courtship displays, pairing behaviour or spawning sites for this species are sparse in the available literature, and much of what is assumed for it is extrapolated from the wider mormyrid family rather than confirmed for moorii itself.
Breeding
Breeding is essentially unresolved for this species and rarely, if ever, achieved in captivity. Wild mormyrids are generally understood to be seasonal spawners cued by flooding, and some genera are thought to scatter eggs among submerged plants or roots with little to no active parental care, but the specifics for Marcusenius moorii have not been worked out in detail — this is honestly a case of "data sparse" rather than a known protocol.
Aquarists should not expect to replicate a reliable breeding setup for this species the way they might for many other ornamental fish; captive-bred stock is essentially unavailable, and the animals seen in the trade are wild-collected. Any future breeding success would represent a genuine gap being filled rather than a repeatable, established method.
In the aquarium
Marcusenius moorii is not a beginner fish. It needs a large footprint — a minimum of around 39.4 in in length — with soft substrate for foraging, plenty of hiding places (driftwood, roots, dense planting or floating cover), and, critically, dim lighting: bright tank lighting is documented to cause wasting and stress in elephantnoses, so subdued light and shaded retreats are not optional extras but a basic husbandry requirement. Water should be kept soft and stable rather than hard or fluctuating.
It is a scaleless fish, like all mormyrids, which makes it markedly more sensitive than scaled species to salt, copper and many standard fish medications — treatments should be chosen and dosed conservatively, ideally after positive identification of any problem rather than as a blanket precaution. Individuals can be territorial and occasionally aggressive toward their own species, particularly in cramped quarters, so tankmates and stocking density need care; a single specimen in a quiet, dimly lit, softwater setup with peaceful companions is a safer default than an assumed group tank. Feed invertebrate foods after dark for best results, and expect a shy, largely nocturnal fish rather than a bold daytime display animal.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Marcusenius moorii as Least Concern, an assessment dated 16 February 2009. Its distribution across the Ogooué, Kouilou-Niari and Congo river systems spanning several Central African countries supports a picture of a wide-ranging, non-threatened species rather than a narrow endemic under pressure.
That status reflects a 2009 assessment rather than a recent reappraisal, and, as with many Congo-basin fishes, dedicated population monitoring is limited relative to better-studied regions. The wider concerns for Congo-basin freshwater habitats generally — deforestation, sedimentation and localised pollution — are the kind of pressures that could matter for this species over time, even though there is no current evidence of a Congo-wide decline specific to Marcusenius moorii.
