Aquascape & setup

Soft, acidic, mineral-poor water — often tannin-stained — like the shaded forest streams and blackwater tributaries it comes from. Keep it gently filtered and stable; that matters far more than hitting an exact pH.

A dark, fine-sand bed, branchy driftwood, root tangles and a generous layer of leaf litter recreate a shaded forest stream. Botanicals tint and soften the water naturally and floating plants cut the light to the dim levels these fish prefer — but keep open sand for foraging.

Community & care

Corydoras are shoaling fish — keep six or more of the same species; a lone or paired cory is a stressed one. They are utterly peaceful bottom-dwellers and belong only with calm, similarly-sized community fish — small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids and the like — never with anything large or boisterous enough to bully a slow-moving fish working the floor.

Aspidoras azaghal is a small armoured catfish from the lower rio Xingu basin of Pará, in the remote Terra do Meio — the 'Middle Land' — of Brazilian Amazonia. Described in 2020 from an expedition the authors framed in Tolkienian terms, it takes its name from Azaghâl, king of the Broadbeam Dwarves, a nod both to the 'Middle Earth' of its rugged type region and to its own dwarfish stature. It belongs to Aspidoras, the compact, twin-fontanelled genus closely allied to Corydoras, and is most nearly related to A. albater and A. raimundi.

Taxonomy & naming

Aspidoras azaghal was described in 2020 by Luiz Tencatt, Janice Muriel-Cunha, Jansen Zuanon, Efrem Ferreira and Marcelo Britto, from an unnamed igarapé (forest stream) tributary in the lower rio Xingu basin, within the Parque Nacional da Serra do Pardo in Pará State, Brazil. The describing paper — playfully titled around 'a journey through the Amazon Middle Earth' — combined morphology with molecular data, reporting about 6.5% genetic divergence from its closest relatives, A. albater and A. raimundi, to confirm the new species. Notably, specimens were collected both above and below a roughly 30-metre waterfall at the type locality, yet were found to form a single population with gene flow across the barrier.

The genus Aspidoras (von Ihering, 1907) belongs to the subfamily Corydoradinae of the armoured-catfish family Callichthyidae, and is set apart from Corydoras chiefly by its paired cranial fontanelle and small eyes. The 2024 Dias–Tencatt revision of the Corydoradinae, which broke the old Corydoras into several genera, kept Aspidoras as a valid lineage; the species accordingly stands as Aspidoras azaghal in the current Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

Aspidoras azaghal is a small, short-bodied corydoradine of typical Aspidoras build — armoured with two rows of overlapping bony plates, a hard helmeted head with small eyes, and three pairs of short barbels around a downturned mouth; its name nods to its modest, 'dwarfish' size. The describing authors diagnose it on a set of distinctive features: the absence of the first (spinous) dorsal-fin element, a medially located parieto-supraoccipital fontanelle, a relatively wide frontal bone, and poorly developed serrations on the pectoral-fin spine.

In pattern it lacks a continuous longitudinal dark stripe along the midline of the flank, and the ventral surface of the trunk is covered with clearly smaller, irregular and/or roundish platelets — a useful character separating it from related species. As in the genus generally, females tend to grow somewhat larger and rounder than males.

Habitat

This species is known from the lower rio Xingu basin in the Terra do Meio of Pará, in forest streams (igarapés) draining the Serra do Pardo uplands of eastern Amazonia. Its type locality lies in clear, flowing water associated with a tall waterfall, in a remote, mountainous and well-forested region. The Xingu is a clearwater Amazon tributary, and habitat of this kind is typically warm, soft and acidic, with shaded streams running over sand, gravel and rock among leaf litter.

Like other corydoradines, A. azaghal is a facultative air-breather, periodically rising to gulp atmospheric air absorbed through a vascularised hindgut — an adaptation well suited to small, warm Amazonian forest streams where dissolved oxygen can fluctuate.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study exists for A. azaghal, but as a small Aspidoras it is a benthic micro-omnivore and detritivore. It forages over the streambed, using its barbels and downturned mouth to sift sand and fine sediment for tiny invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans and worms — along with biofilm and organic detritus, expelling cleaned material through the gills. Its small mouth restricts it to small prey. In captivity, where it is seldom kept, it would be expected to take sinking micro-foods, small frozen and live items, and fine particles missed by other fish.

Mating

Spawning has not been documented for A. azaghal specifically, but it can be presumed to follow the corydoradine norm seen across Aspidoras. These are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond; a ripe female and an attendant male adopt the characteristic 'T-position,' the male at right angles to the female's head. The female carries a few eggs at a time in a basket formed by her pelvic fins and presses them onto a cleaned surface, repeating the sequence until the clutch of adhesive eggs is complete, after which the parents take no further part.

Breeding

Aspidoras azaghal is a recently described, rarely collected Amazonian species, and there is no published account of it breeding in aquaria. By analogy with related Aspidoras, spawning would likely be triggered by a cool, generous water change mimicking the rains, with the group skewed toward more males than females; the adhesive eggs would be laid in small batches on firm surfaces and left unguarded, with the adults liable to eat them. Eggs of small corydoradines generally hatch within a few days, the fry then taking microworm, baby brine shrimp and powdered foods. Clutch size for this species is unknown.

In the aquarium

Aspidoras azaghal is essentially a wild-described species rather than an established aquarium fish, and it is rarely if ever seen in the trade. Were it kept, it would call for the same care as other small Aspidoras: a shoal of six or more, since these are gregarious fish that become stressed in isolation, and a soft sand or smooth fine-gravel bottom to protect the barbels they feed with. Given its clearwater Amazonian origin it would want warm, soft, acidic, well-oxygenated water with gentle flow and scrupulous cleanliness. It would suit only the most peaceful small-fish community. As with all corydoradines, it should be moved with a container rather than a net to avoid snagging the fin spines, and transported carefully because a stressed animal can release skin toxins dangerous in a small volume of water.

Conservation

Aspidoras azaghal has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List, so its conservation status is best recorded as not evaluated. It is known only from a small area of the lower Xingu basin in the Terra do Meio of Pará — much of it within a protected area, the Parque Nacional da Serra do Pardo, which offers some shelter. The wider region, however, sits in the arc of Amazonian deforestation and has been subject to the hydrological changes of the Belo Monte dam complex on the Xingu, pressures that can degrade clearwater forest streams. A formal assessment would be required before any firm conclusion about its risk could be drawn.
