Taxonomy & naming
Aspidoras velites was described in 2002 by Marcelo Britto, Flávio Lima and Eduardo Moreira, from the upper Rio Araguaia basin (Rio Tocantins drainage) in Mato Grosso, Brazil. It is a member of Aspidoras Ihering, 1907, a genus of small Brazilian callichthyid catfishes long treated as the close relative of the far larger Corydoras within the subfamily Corydoradinae.
The great 2024 revision of the Corydoradinae by Dias, Tencatt and colleagues dismantled the old, oversized Corydoras and resurrected or erected several genera — Brochis, Hoplisoma, Osteogaster, Gastrodermus and others — but Aspidoras emerged from that work intact as a valid genus in its own right. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes accordingly continues to list this fish as Aspidoras velites; the 2024 revision did not move it, so for once the hobby name and the current scientific combination are the same. The species sits among the more morphologically distinctive members of Aspidoras, and its unusual fin and armour characters made it of particular interest when it was first diagnosed.
Morphology
This is a diminutive catfish, females reaching roughly 1.5 in and males a little smaller at about 1 in standard length, with a notably slender body for a corydoradine. Like all members of the subfamily it is armoured rather than scaled, with two rows of overlapping bony plates down each flank, but velites departs from the standard pattern in several ways. The area in front of the dorsal fin is naked — lacking the small predorsal plate seen in relatives — the first pectoral-fin element is not modified into a stiff spine, and the dorsal spine itself is weak. These reductions are exactly what the name velites alludes to.
The ground colour is pale, marked by three dark longitudinal stripes running along the body, a more linear pattern than the blotchy mottling of many congeners. Aspidoras differ from Corydoras in skull and swim-bladder details rather than in obvious external form, so to the aquarist velites simply reads as a small, fine-boned, neatly striped cory.
Habitat
Aspidoras velites is known from small tributaries of the upper Rio Araguaia in Mato Grosso, part of the vast Tocantins–Araguaia system of central Brazil. These are clear, shallow headwater streams over sand and fine gravel, fringed by gallery forest and seasonal Cerrado vegetation, with the strong wet-and-dry seasonality typical of the central Brazilian plateau.
Reported aquarium parameters reflect that origin: warm but not hot water around 72–77 °F, a near-neutral to mildly acidic pH of about 6.0–7.0, and soft to moderately soft water. As a small benthic catfish of running headwaters it favours clean, well-oxygenated water over a soft bottom it can sift, and the species' restricted known range makes it far less catholic in distribution than the wide-ranging trade corys.
Feeding
Like other corydoradines, A. velites is a benthic foraging omnivore. It works the sand and leaf litter of its home streams with its barbels, sifting out small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans and organic detritus. In the aquarium it readily takes the standard small foods — sinking flake and tablet, frozen and live bloodworm, brine shrimp and other fine items — and, like all corys, benefits from a varied menu rather than scraps left by tankmates. Its small mouth and modest size mean it wants correspondingly small foods.
Mating
The reproductive behaviour of Aspidoras velites specifically has not been documented in detail, but Aspidoras share the egg-laying, non-pair-bonding biology of the broader Corydoradinae. As in Corydoras, spawning is expected to follow the classic shoaling courtship in which a male and a ready female adopt a 'T-position', the female holding a small clutch of eggs in a pelvic-fin basket and pressing them onto a cleaned surface — plant, stone or glass — in repeated small batches. No pair bond forms, and males do not defend a territory. In the absence of species-specific observations this account stays general rather than inventing detail.
Breeding
Captive breeding of A. velites is barely recorded — the species is rare in the trade and most stock is wild-collected. By analogy with better-known Aspidoras and Corydoras, spawning would be triggered by cooler, softer water mimicking the onset of the rains, producing small clutches of adhesive eggs scattered across surfaces and given no parental care; the adults will eat eggs, so a breeder would separate them. Eggs of similar small corydoradines hatch in a few days, and the fry take microworm and newly hatched brine shrimp once free-swimming. These are expectations drawn from the genus, not confirmed observations of this species, which remains poorly studied in aquaria.
In the aquarium
Aspidoras velites is a collector's fish rather than a community staple — it appears only sporadically in imports and is not commercially bred at scale. Kept well, it needs the same essentials as any cory and a little more care besides. It is a shoaling species and should be held in a group of six or more; small numbers leave it nervous and inactive. A soft sand substrate is essential, both because it feeds by sifting and because sharp gravel damages the delicate barbels of so fine-boned a fish.
Given its headwater origin, provide clean, well-oxygenated water with gentle flow, temperatures kept in the moderate 72–77 °F band rather than tropical-hot, and soft, near-neutral chemistry. It is entirely peaceful and suits a quiet tank of small, calm companions — micro-rasboras, small tetras, dwarf cichlids — but its size and rarity argue for a dedicated or carefully chosen community where it will not be outcompeted at feeding time. As with all corys, handle by cup rather than net to avoid snagging fins, and avoid crowding it in transport.
Conservation
Aspidoras velites has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List, so it carries no formal conservation status. That silence is itself worth noting: the species is known only from a restricted area of the upper Rio Araguaia headwaters in Mato Grosso, and narrow-range Cerrado and plateau-stream fishes face real pressures from agricultural expansion, deforestation of gallery forest, and the damming and siltation of their small clear-water streams. Without a published assessment its true status is unknown, and any such localized endemic warrants monitoring rather than assumption of safety.
