Ancistrus ranunculus is one of the most dramatically built bristlenoses in the family — a dorsally flattened, rock-clinging loricariid from the hard-current zones of the Rio Xingu and Rio Tocantins whose entire head is engulfed by a dense thicket of tentacles in both sexes, giving rise to its trade name 'medusa pleco.' Described by Muller, Rapp Py-Daniel & Zuanon in 1994 from a type locality on the Xingu near Arroz Cru, it is the L-number 034 long admired by pleco specialists for its bizarre appearance and challenging care requirements. Far larger and more demanding than the common bristlenose, it belongs to a small group of Ancistrus specialised for life in shallow, fast-flowing, oxygen-saturated reaches where few other fish can hold position.

Taxonomy & naming

Ancistrus ranunculus was described in 1994 by Muller, Rapp Py-Daniel & Zuanon, based on specimens collected from the Rio Xingu near Arroz Cru, state of Pará, Brazil — specifically the furo do Tucum Seco, a fast-water channel in the lower Xingu drainage. The species was placed in Ancistrus at the time of description and has remained there; the authority is therefore non-parenthetical.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Ancistrus ranunculus Muller, Rapp Py-Daniel & Zuanon, 1994 as a valid species. It entered the L-number system as L034, a designation assigned before formal description based on photographs and exports from the Xingu, and the scientific name and L-number are now concordant.

Ancistrus belongs to tribe Ancistrini within subfamily Hypostominae of the family Loricariidae (order Siluriformes). Loricariidae, with more than 900 valid species, is the most species-rich catfish family and one of the most diverse vertebrate families on Earth. Within Ancistrus itself — a large genus of roughly 60–70 described species with many awaiting description — A. ranunculus is distinctive for its unusually robust tentacle development in both sexes and its extreme body flattening, adaptations to its high-current, rocky-substrate niche.

A closely related and visually similar taxon, Ancistrus cf. ranunculus 'spotted', is occasionally exported from overlapping regions and is considered by some to be a distinct undescribed species; those fish should be treated as Ancistrus cf. ranunculus until a formal description is available.

Morphology

Ancistrus ranunculus reaches approximately 5.5 in standard length (SL); FishBase records a maximum of 7.5 in total length (TL) based on the largest specimen in the dataset. The body is exceptionally flattened dorso-ventrally — more so than most other Ancistrus — an adaptation for pressing tightly against rock surfaces in powerful current. The head is broad and triangular, often nearly as wide as it is long, and bears the elaborate tentacle mass that defines the species in the trade.

The tentacle development of A. ranunculus is unique within Ancistrus: both sexes carry tentacles, but those of breeding males erupt not merely from the snout margin (as in most bristlenoses) but from the entire dorsal head surface, producing the dense, branching mass that recalls the mythological Medusa. Females have shorter, simpler tentacles generally restricted to the snout rim. The body is fully armoured in interlocking bony scutes; the sucker-disc mouth bears rows of small spatulate teeth adapted to rasping biofilm and organic material from hard substrates.

Colouration is dark grey to blackish-blue, often with a subtle blueish iridescence on the flanks; there is no prominent spot pattern of the kind seen in A. dolichopterus. The fins are similarly dark. Juveniles may show a slightly paler, more brownish ground colour. Adults can appear almost black in dim lighting against dark substrate.

Sexual dimorphism beyond the tentacle differences includes the stouter odontodes (spiny projections) that develop on the pectoral-fin rays and interopercular region of mature males — features used in male-male combat and mate display.

Habitat

Ancistrus ranunculus is associated with the clear-water, high-current rapids and shallow rocky runs of the Rio Xingu and Rio Tocantins in the eastern Amazon basin. Both rivers drain ancient Precambrian shields and flow over granite and dark volcanic rock, producing clear, relatively warm, well-oxygenated water very different in chemistry from the blackwater Rio Negro or the turbid whitewater Amazon proper.

Within these systems, A. ranunculus occupies the most hydraulically challenging microhabitats available to any bottom-dwelling fish: shallow fast-flowing reaches where surface agitation maintains near-saturated dissolved oxygen levels and where water temperature climbs to 84–91 °F in exposed, sun-lit sections during the dry season. The species shelters in narrow rock crevices, spaces between superimposed boulders, and the undersides of flat submerged slabs — refuges that provide protection from predators while remaining within the oxygenated current zone. At low water (dry season), usable depth can be as little as a few tens of centimetres in the fish's preferred microhabitat.

The typical water parameters in Xingu rapids where this species occurs: temperature 79–86 °F (with dry-season peaks above 86 °F), pH 6.0–7.0, and very low total dissolved solids given the granitic catchment. Conductivity in the Xingu mainstream is low but not as extreme as the Rio Negro. The availability of heavily oxygenated water is not optional for this species — it is physiologically dependent on high oxygen, and the literature is consistent that it cannot thrive in still or poorly circulated aquaria.

Feeding

Ancistrus ranunculus is more strongly carnivorous in its dietary preferences than most Ancistrus species, a feature noted by essentially all published sources on the species and reflecting its origins in the protein-poor, high-energy rapids environment. Whereas common bristlenoses graze primarily on algae, biofilm, and detritus, A. ranunculus consumes a higher proportion of animal material — small invertebrates, insect larvae, and other benthic fauna that colonise rock surfaces in fast-flowing reaches.

In the aquarium, dietary balance is therefore critical: an exclusively algae-based or vegetable diet will leave the fish nutritionally deficient over time. Suitable foods include high-quality sinking carnivore pellets, frozen bloodworm, frozen tubifex, and chopped mussel or prawn. Algae wafers and blanched vegetables (cucumber, courgette, spinach) should still be offered as dietary supplements — the species will consume them — but protein-rich items should form a substantial component of the weekly menu. Driftwood in the aquarium provides a grazing surface for the biofilm and microorganisms the species naturally encounters on submerged rock.

Mating

Like all Ancistrus, A. ranunculus is a cave-spawner in which males establish and defend individual territories centred on a confined spawning cavity. In the wild, such cavities are provided by cracks between boulders, undercut rock ledges, and similar refuges in the rapids substrate. The male holds his territory persistently, repelling rival males with displays and direct confrontation that can involve locking of pectoral spines.

Courtship involves the male's presence and cave-holding rather than elaborate visual display; a ripe female enters the cave, and spawning occurs in close contact within the cavity. The male fans the eggs from the moment of deposition and takes sole responsibility for the clutch once the female departs. Inter-male aggression in captivity is pronounced and can result in injury if multiple males share limited space. Providing more caves than males, and a large footprint aquarium with broken sightlines, reduces conflict.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Ancistrus ranunculus is significantly less common than for the hardy common bristlenose (A. cirrhosus), and the species is regarded as one of the more challenging Ancistrus to spawn in home aquaria. Seriously Fish notes breeding as rare in captivity, and ScotCat describes spawning as unreported under the name A. ranunculus, reflecting both the difficulty and the relatively small number of specialists keeping the species.

When spawning has been achieved, it follows the standard Ancistrus pattern: eggs are deposited inside a cave or crevice, the male guards and fans them, and hatching occurs at approximately 5–7 days at 81–82 °F. The newly hatched larvae carry large yolk sacs and remain in the spawning cave under paternal guard; the fry become free-swimming after yolk absorption, at which point very fine foods — baby brine shrimp nauplii, microworm, powdered algae wafer — are appropriate. Breeding successes reported in the hobby have typically involved highly oxygenated water, slightly acidic conditions (pH 6.0–6.5), and temperatures maintained at the warmer end of the species' range. Soft water and regular large water changes appear to be important triggers.

In the aquarium

Ancistrus ranunculus is not suitable for the general community aquarium and should be considered an advanced-level species. The single non-negotiable requirement is a powerful, constant water current with excellent oxygenation — the species will decline in sluggish or poorly filtered aquaria regardless of other conditions. A turnover rate of at least 8–10 times the tank volume per hour via quality canister filtration, combined with directional spray bars or powerheads to create defined current lanes, is the practical minimum. Surface agitation should be vigorous.

A minimum tank footprint of 31.5 in × 12 in (approximately 25–30 US gal) is appropriate for a single specimen or a pair; a larger tank of 47 in or more is needed for any attempt at a breeding group. The substrate and decoration should replicate the rocky rapids habitat: smooth or rounded river boulders, flat slate pieces creating caves and crevices, and driftwood pieces. Live plants are not essential and will struggle in the high-current setup; robust species such as Anubias or Java fern attached to rocks can work but are optional.

Water chemistry: temperature 79–86 °F, pH 6.0–7.0, low to moderate hardness. The species tolerates moderate hardness better than Rio Negro specialists but does not appreciate alkaline water. Weekly water changes of 30–40 % using dechlorinated, temperature-matched water are important for maintaining the low nitrate and high oxygen that the species requires.

Compatibility: A. ranunculus is generally peaceful toward dissimilar fish but males are territorial toward conspecific males and other cave-claiming plecos. Suitable tankmates include robust schooling fish that can tolerate the high current — hillstream loaches, fast-water barbs, or other Xingu endemics — though the species also does well as a solo specimen in a dedicated biotope setup.

Conservation

Ancistrus ranunculus is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) by the IUCN Red List (evaluation published under The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species 2022.2, with the taxon last evaluated in 2018 and receiving an NT designation under criterion A3c). The NT status reflects genuine population-level concerns: the species' distribution is restricted to the Xingu and Tocantins drainages, and both rivers have been subject to significant hydroelectric development.

The Rio Xingu downstream of Altamira was profoundly altered by the construction of the Belo Monte hydroelectric complex, one of the world's largest dams, completed in stages between 2011 and 2019. The Belo Monte project flooded and dewatered significant stretches of the Xingu rapids — the precise habitat type that A. ranunculus and numerous other endemic loricariids depend on. Population impacts on rapid-specialist plecos in the affected reach have been documented and are considered severe. The Rio Tocantins, meanwhile, was fragmented by the Tucuruí dam decades earlier.

Collections for the ornamental fish trade also contribute pressure. The species appears in the aquarium trade as L034, and wild-caught specimens are the primary source in the hobby due to the scarcity of captive breeding. Sustainable collection practices and hobbyist success with captive reproduction would reduce this pressure. The species is not listed under CITES appendices.
