Moema obliqua is a small annual killifish endemic to the Beni department of Bolivia, where it inhabits seasonal forest pools and swamps of the Rio Mamoré drainage that vanish completely during the dry months. Known from only two localities within the Beni Biological Station biosphere reserve, it exemplifies the high conservation stakes of the Neotropical annual-killi guild: a species adapted to one of the most ephemeral of all habitats, with a compressed life cycle measured in months, threatened by drainage, agrochemical pollution, and livestock pressure on the very seasonal wetlands it depends on. Assessed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, it survives in the wild principally because part of its known range falls within a protected area.

Taxonomy & naming

Moema obliqua was originally described in 1996 by Wilson J. E. M. Costa, Javier Sarmiento, and Alonso Barrera under the genus Pterolebias, a grouping of South American annual killifishes. Subsequent revision of the rivulid family Rivulidae recognised Aphyolebias as a distinct genus containing the Andean-foothill and western-Amazonian annuals that had been loosely aggregated within or alongside Pterolebias; the species was therefore recombined as Moema obliqua, with the original authority placed in parentheses to record the transfer. The valid name as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Moema obliqua (Costa, Sarmiento & Barrera, 1996).

The genus Aphyolebias is characterised by moderate body size, an elongate profile, and the burrowing reproductive strategy typical of South American annual killies. FishBase records the meristic formula as nine to ten dorsal soft rays, sixteen to eighteen anal soft rays, and thirty-four vertebrae — features that distinguish it from closely related genera sharing the Bolivian and Peruvian upper-Amazon drainage system. The specific epithet obliquus is Latin for 'oblique' or 'slanting', most likely a reference to the angle or orientation of a diagnostic marking on the body, though the original description details are not reproduced in available secondary sources.

This fish was long listed as Aphyolebias obliquus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Moema, and the current combination Moema obliqua is followed here.

Morphology

Moema obliqua is a slender, moderately elongate killifish reaching a maximum of 1.9 in standard length (FishBase). Like other members of the genus, the body is laterally compressed toward the caudal peduncle, the head is slightly flattened dorsally, and the mouth is terminal and upturned — a configuration suited to snatching prey at or just below the water surface in shallow, often structurally simple seasonal pools.

Males of annual killifishes in the Aphyolebias group are typically more colourful than females, exhibiting iridescent body scales and patterned fins used in courtship and rival display. Females are generally plainer, with a more rounded abdomen when gravid. The species shows moderate sexual dimorphism, with males distinguishable by their finnage and colouration once mature. Dorsal fin rays number nine to ten; anal fin rays sixteen to eighteen — a relatively high anal-ray count that gives the fish a distinctive silhouette, with the long anal fin providing much of the propulsive surface during the diving spawning runs that characterise annual-killi reproduction.

Habitat

The type locality of Moema obliqua is a temporary swamp at Curiraba Creek within the Beni Biological Station, Beni department, Bolivia. FishBase describes the habitat as temporary swamps of seasonally flooded forest — shallow depressions and pools that form within forested or partially forested lowland terrain when the rainy season floods the Rio Mamoré floodplain, and that dry out completely during the long Bolivian dry season (approximately May to October). The species is benthopelagic in freshwater tropical conditions.

These seasonal wetlands are nutrient-rich but structurally simple, often turbid from leaf litter and organic matter accumulating on the pool floor. The substrate is soft mud, detritus, and decomposing plant material — precisely the medium into which adult fish bury their diapausing eggs before the pool evaporates. The IUCN records the species as inhabiting seasonal and intermittent freshwater marshes and pools, each typically under eight hectares in surface area. The extent of occurrence is estimated at 17,435 mi², but actual occupancy is patchy, and the species is described as rare, probably present as few individuals at any given locality.

Feeding

Annual killifishes of the genus Aphyolebias are insectivorous micro-predators, taking aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms — as well as terrestrial invertebrates that fall onto the pool surface. The short growing season after the first rains brings a pulse of zooplankton and aquatic insect activity that annual killies exploit rapidly, growing at an accelerated pace to reach sexual maturity before the pool dries.

In the aquarium Moema obliqua and its relatives accept a variety of small live and frozen foods: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, Tubifex, bloodworm, and small terrestrial invertebrates such as fruit flies (Drosophila). Offering a diverse diet supports good condition and vivid colouration in males. Dried or pelleted foods are typically accepted less readily and should be used only as a supplement rather than a staple.

Mating

Moema obliqua follows the annual-killi reproductive pattern in which courtship and spawning are intimately linked to substrate diving. Males court females with lateral displays, flaring fins and presenting their colouration; a receptive female signals her readiness and the pair dive together into the soft substrate — peat, mud, or detritus on the pool floor. Fertilisation occurs within the substrate during this dive, and the fertilised egg is immediately buried and left.

The urgency of annual-killi courtship reflects the biology: the available breeding window between the pool filling and drying may be as short as a few weeks. Males therefore court intensively and persistently, and in confined aquarium conditions a single male can harass females to exhaustion. Best practice in captivity is to keep multiple females per male, or to rotate individuals, and to provide abundant vegetation or structure to give females refuge. Spawning occurs daily or near-daily across the available season.

Breeding

The eggs of Moema obliqua are annual diapausing eggs, meaning they are adapted to survive the complete desiccation of the pool that follows breeding. After the adults bury each egg during a spawning dive, the egg enters diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development that can persist for weeks to months in the dry substrate while the pool above has evaporated. The IUCN notes that reproduction involves external fertilisation with eggs buried in substrate for diapause until the next flood. When seasonal rains return and rewet the substrate, hatching is triggered and the fry emerge directly into the newly reformed pool.

In the hobby this cycle is replicated by spawning the fish on a peat or coco-fibre medium, removing the medium when it is laden with eggs, partially drying it to a lightly moist condition, sealing it in a plastic bag, and storing it at room temperature for a diapause period appropriate to the species — typically six weeks to four months depending on strain and conditions. The medium is then re-wetted with soft, slightly acidic water, and fry appear within hours to a day. Fry are relatively large at hatching compared with non-annual killies, and can immediately take baby brine shrimp nauplii. Growth is rapid: fish may reach sexual maturity within six to eight weeks of hatching, reflecting the compressed wild life cycle. Adults in the wild live less than a year; aquarium specimens kept under low temperatures may extend this somewhat but remain short-lived.

In the aquarium

Moema obliqua is an infrequently available species in the killi hobby and is rarely encountered outside specialist circles such as the American Killifish Association and regional killi clubs, where strain-coded fish (tracked by collection data) are exchanged. Its care follows the standard pattern for Bolivian and Peruvian annual killies: a small aquarium (a 8–11 US gal tank is adequate for a trio), soft and slightly acidic water reflecting the soft floodplain pools of its native habitat, dim lighting, a dark substrate, and floating or fine-leaved plants to break up sight lines.

Water temperature should reflect the warm Amazonian lowland conditions of Beni — approximately 72–79 °F is appropriate, with slightly cooler water used to trigger resting behaviour if desired between breeding cycles. Because the species is rare in captivity, maintaining a healthy captive population and sharing eggs through killi networks is a meaningful conservation contribution. Its short adult lifespan means that a colony requires sustained breeding effort to persist. The fish is peaceful toward tankmates of appropriate size and temperament, though its small size makes it vulnerable to any fish large enough to eat it.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Moema obliqua as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion B1ab(iii), based on an extent of occurrence of 17,435 mi² and a known range of only two locations, combined with continuing decline in the quality of its seasonally flooded pool habitat. The assessment was published in 2016 from an evaluation dated April 2014, with a subsequent assessment in 2023 confirming the VU status.

The principal threats identified by the IUCN are agricultural drainage of the seasonal wetlands where the species breeds, livestock activities that disturb and compact pool margins, and pollution from agrochemicals used on surrounding cropland. The species receives partial protection from its occurrence within the Beni Biological Station (Estación Biológica del Beni), a UNESCO biosphere reserve in Beni department, which buffers part of its range from the most intensive agricultural conversion. However, the reserve is not immune to edge-zone pressures and its seasonal pool systems remain vulnerable to hydrological modification.

Beyond habitat degradation, the extreme range restriction and small population size characteristic of single-locality annual killifishes mean that stochastic events — a severe drought, an introduced competitor such as the mosquitofish (Gambusia), a pollution incident — could eliminate the species before any response is possible. Maintaining viable captive populations through killi specialist networks, with careful provenance documentation, represents a practical conservation complement to site protection.
