Moema rubrocaudata was described by Lothar Seegers in 1984 as Pterolebias rubrocaudatus, based on specimens from a type locality in the Río Tambopata, a tributary of the Río Madre de Dios drainage roughly seven kilometres from Puerto Maldonado in southeastern Peru (holotype ZFMK 13413, archived at the Zoologisches Forschungsmuseum Alexander Koenig, Bonn). Ortega and Vari transferred the species to the genus Aphyolebias in 1986, and Costa revised it to Aphyolebias within a broader rearrangement in 1998. Valdesalici subsequently placed it in the genus Moema in 2015, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer and Fong) lists the current valid combination as Moema rubrocaudata (Seegers, 1984); older literature and hobbyist sources continue to use the Aphyolebias combination.
The genus Aphyolebias, in its traditional scope, belongs to the Neotropical annual killifish radiation of the family Rivulidae (order Cyprinodontiformes). The genera Aphyolebias, Moema, and Pterolebias have historically been rearranged repeatedly as species-level and generic-level revisions have applied different weighting to morphological characters. Whatever the generic assignment, the species is firmly placed within the South American annual killifish radiation whose members inhabit temporary floodplain pools and complete their entire life cycle within a single wet season.
The specific epithet rubrocaudatus is formed from the Latin ruber (red) and cauda (tail), describing the vivid red caudal fin of adult males. The original spelling in Seegers 1984 is rubrocaudatus (masculine), adjusted to rubrocaudata under the feminine Moema, consistent with the rules of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature.
This fish was long listed as Aphyolebias rubrocaudatus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Moema, and the current combination Moema rubrocaudata is followed here.
Morphology
Males reach a maximum total length of approximately 2.4 in (FishBase), though most individuals in healthy aquarium stock are somewhat smaller. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, typical of the Neotropical annual killi shape. Dorsal-fin ray counts average around 8–9 (D 8.5 average), anal-fin rays around 14 (A 14.0 average), and lateral-line scale counts around 33–34, giving the fish a relatively long, slender outline with the dorsal and anal fins set well back toward the caudal peduncle — a characteristic silhouette shared across the Rivulidae.
Colour in males is the standout feature: the caudal fin is a deep, saturated red that names the species, and the body ground colour is typically an olive-tan or light brown with variable blue-green iridescence on the flanks. Colour expression varies considerably across the species' distribution, and captive individuals held in good condition develop the most intense pigmentation. Females are uniformly cryptic — brownish with little fin colour — as is the rule among annual killifish where the male bears the ornamental investment.
The pre-dorsal length is relatively long, measuring approximately 73.8% of standard length, and body depth is modest at around 21.9% SL, both figures consistent with FishBase morphometric data and conferring the slightly pike-like body plan visible in the males' lateral display.
Habitat
The type locality sits in the lowland primary forest of the Madre de Dios Department, southeastern Peru, within the upper Amazon basin. It Rains Fishes (Vermeulen) describes the habitat at collection as primary forest standing waters — shallow, temporary or seasonal pools that accumulate in forest clearings and low-lying areas during the wet season and contract to moist substrate or dry out entirely during the dry season. Water conditions in such habitats are typically soft and slightly acidic, reflecting the organic-rich, low-conductivity runoff characteristic of Amazonian lowland forest floors.
The species is sympatric at the type locality with Rivulus beniensis, Rivulus aff. iridescens, and Moema quiii. The presence of Moema quiii — a larger annual killi — is behaviourally significant: Killi-Data notes that M. rubrocaudata is diurnal, active during daylight, and consequently vulnerable to predation by larger nocturnal annuals sharing the same seasonal pools. This predator-avoidance niche partitioning is consistent with the high structural heterogeneity of tropical forest pools, where leaf litter provides daytime refuge.
FishBase records the species as occurring in the Amazon River basin in Peru broadly, suggesting the known distribution extends beyond the type locality along the Madre de Dios system, though precise range mapping for this fish remains sparse in the published literature.
Feeding
Moema rubrocaudata is a carnivore in the wild, subsisting on the small invertebrates available in its forest-pool habitat — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, and other zooplankton that colonise temporary water bodies during the wet season. Trophic-level estimates from FishBase place it at 3.2 (±0.4 SD), a figure consistent with active invertebrate predation at the low to middle end of the food chain.
In the aquarium, It Rains Fishes stresses that live food is essential for this species and that dried or prepared foods are typically refused. Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, small chironomid larvae (bloodworm), and similar live or frozen invertebrates form the core diet that maintains condition and colouration. The refusal of dry foods is commonly reported among Neotropical annual killies of this group and should be factored into husbandry decisions before acquisition.
Mating
As a member of the Neotropical annual killifish radiation, Moema rubrocaudata follows the substrate-spawning reproductive mode that defines its group. Males court females with extended fin displays — spreading and quivering the coloured caudal and dorsal fins to maximise the visual impact of the red pigmentation. The male positions himself alongside or slightly above the female, and the pair assume a side-by-side posture that leads into a spawning embrace.
The species is not monogamous; in practice one male will court and spawn with multiple females across the season. It Rains Fishes recommends a ratio of one male to two or more females in captivity, both to spread the male's persistent courtship pressure and to maximise the number of eggs produced during the limited time available. Males can be aggressive in their courtship and females must be given adequate space and structure to retreat. High coloration in males intensifies during courtship and is modulated by social context.
Breeding
Spawning is a substrate dive: the paired fish sink together into peat, mud, or detritus at the pool bottom and deposit eggs directly into the substrate, burying them in the process. This spawning act is the defining behaviour of annual killifish — the eggs are not attached to plants, scattered in open water, or guarded, but interred in the substrate to await the dry season in diapause, a state of suspended embryonic development that protects them against desiccation as the pool contracts and disappears.
Incubation lasts approximately four months in peat at room temperature, according to FishBase and corroborated by It Rains Fishes. The standard hobbyist technique mirrors the wild cycle: after spawning onto a peat or coir substrate in the tank, the spawning medium is removed, squeezed lightly to remove excess water, sealed in a plastic bag, and stored in darkness at a stable temperature for the diapause period. At the end of incubation the peat is placed in a shallow dish of soft, slightly acidic water (re-wetting simulates the returning rains) and fry emerge over hours to days. Fry are large enough for freshly hatched Artemia nauplii from the outset.
The species is described as extremely productive when well fed with live food — FishBase records a high resilience category with a population-doubling time under fifteen months, consistent with the life-history strategy of annual fishes that invest heavily in fast growth and early reproduction to complete a generation before the pool dries. Wild individuals almost certainly live less than one year; aquarium specimens may survive somewhat longer under benign conditions but are short-lived by aquarium standards.
In the aquarium
A modest tank of 7–11 US gal is sufficient for a breeding group of one male and two or more females, as recommended by It Rains Fishes. The aquarium should be set up to replicate the species' forest-pool origins: soft, slightly acidic water, minimal current, a peat or fine-grained substrate for spawning, and floating plants or surface cover to reduce stress. A tight-fitting lid is advisable, as killies are accomplished jumpers.
Temperature should be maintained in the range 77–86 °F (FishBase; It Rains Fishes gives storage temperature as the upper end of this range for egg incubation). Water changes with soft, conditioned water are recommended at regular intervals; annual killies in their natural seasonal pools experience periodic dilution by fresh rainfall and respond well to the same stimulus in captivity. Peat filtration or the addition of Indian almond leaves can help condition the water and maintain the slightly amber tint that the species prefers.
The key husbandry challenge is feeding: this species is typically reluctant to take dry or prepared foods and requires a consistent supply of live or frozen invertebrates. Keepers who cannot reliably source Daphnia, Artemia, or bloodworm may find the fish difficult to maintain in long-term health. Beyond that, Moema rubrocaudata is a rewarding annual killi for hobbyists already familiar with the diapause egg-storage cycle — the ritual of harvesting peat, storing eggs, and watching fry emerge from re-wetted substrate connects the aquarist directly to the ecology of seasonal Amazonian forest pools.
Conservation
Moema rubrocaudata has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). No formal population assessment or range survey has been published. The species is known from a restricted type locality in the Río Tambopata near Puerto Maldonado in the Madre de Dios Department of southeastern Peru — a region that is simultaneously one of the most biodiverse on Earth and among the most rapidly developing, as logging, gold mining, and agricultural expansion continue to advance into the lowland forest.
The temporary forest pools that annual killies depend on are among the most vulnerable of freshwater habitats: they are small, isolated, invisible to coarse-resolution land-use mapping, and easily drained, filled, or degraded by surrounding land conversion. A single species of annual killi may depend on a handful of seasonally flooded depressions within a few square kilometres; loss of forest canopy alters the hydrology, temperature, and chemistry of these microhabitats in ways that can eliminate local populations entirely. The sympatric Moema quiii faces the same pressures.
The hobbyist community maintains living populations of M. rubrocaudata in European and American killifish societies, and this captive-breeding network constitutes the most reliable insurance against the loss of the species should its wild localities be degraded. Collection codes and locality data preserved in hobbyist records are often the only fine-grained distributional information available for species of this group, and their value to future conservation assessments is considerable.
