Taxonomy & naming
The species was first described by George S. Myers in 1954 as Pterolebias peruensis, published in the Aquarium Journal (volume 25, page 176), based on material collected from approximately 75 miles west of Leticia, in Loreto Province, Peru — floodplain pools associated with the Marañón River system. The holotype is deposited at the California Academy of Sciences (CAS-SU 47658). The parenthetical authority in the current name records that the combination has changed since the original description.
Wilson J.E.M. Costa revised the genus-level placement in 1998, transferring the species to the newly erected Aphyolebias, where it sat as a reference species — the genus name was built partly around it. A further revision by Valdesalici and colleagues in 2015 synonymised Aphyolebias under Moema, producing the current valid combination Moema peruensis (Myers, 1954) as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences). In the hobby and much of the older literature the fish continues to circulate as Moema peruensis, and it is listed under that name in FishBase. The species belongs to the family Rivulidae, subfamily Rivulinae — the New World annual and non-annual killifishes.
Color variation between populations collected from different localities in the Iquitos region is high enough that hobbyists treat collection-point data as meaningful. The species is listed as the type of Aphyolebias, though that genus-level identity has since been folded into Moema under the most recent authoritative treatment.
This fish was long listed as Aphyolebias peruensis; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Moema, and the current combination Moema peruensis is followed here.
Morphology
Moema peruensis is a moderately sized annual killi reaching a maximum recorded total length of 3.9 in (FishBase), though most individuals kept in captivity are somewhat smaller. The body plan is fusiform to moderately deep, typical of the Rivulidae, with the robust musculature and slightly dorso-ventrally flattened ventral profile that characterises species that burrow into soft substrate to deposit eggs.
Males are strongly dichromatic and are among the more ornamental of the South American annuals. Coloration varies considerably between collection localities — a characteristic noted consistently by both the hobbyist literature and the dedicated killi community — but males typically display a brilliant blue-green to turquoise iridescence on the flanks, broken by red or orange marking on the fins and body. Females are the usual drab brownish cryptic pattern common to annual rivulids, allowing them to blend into the leaf-litter substrate of their pools. The fins of males are often extended and ornamented; caudal and dorsal fin patterns can serve as a rough guide to collection locality in experienced hands.
Habitat
In the wild, Moema peruensis inhabits small, isolated, stagnant or barely flowing pools within primary tropical forest in the lowlands of northern Peru. The type locality and most subsequent collection records cluster around the Iquitos area, Loreto Province — in particular the Yarinacoya (Yarinacocha) region — in floodplain terrain associated with the Marañón and its tributaries. These pools form during the seasonal flood pulse of the western Amazon, retaining water for only part of the year before drying out entirely during the dry season.
Water chemistry in the pools is soft and acidic: It Rains Fishes records pH as low as 5.3–6.0 at collection sites, consistent with the humic, blackwater character typical of Amazonian forest floor pools laden with decomposing leaf litter. FishBase gives a temperature of approximately 81 °F and hardness around 12 dGH. The pools are typically shallow, shaded by primary forest canopy, and floored with a soft substrate of peat, mud, and decaying detritus — the essential medium in which eggs are deposited and incubated.
The species is therefore intimately dependent on intact primary forest: the canopy shading, the organic substrate, and the hydrology of seasonal forest pools are all interlocked. Deforestation alters insolation and soil hydrology and can eliminate the narrow window of aquatic habitat on which the entire life cycle depends.
Feeding
Moema peruensis is a carnivore in the wild, preying on small invertebrates available in the forest pool — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and other small organisms of the leaf-litter microhabitat. Annual killies of the Rivulidae are characteristically visual, active hunters that respond best to moving prey.
In captivity the species is notoriously unwilling to accept dry or prepared foods; both the hobby literature and dedicated killi sources are consistent that it requires live or frozen meaty foods. Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, Cyclops, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and small blackworm or Tubifex are all accepted. Refusal to eat flake or pellet food is the norm rather than the exception, and keepers who attempt to maintain this species on dry foods alone typically lose it within weeks. Regular live food feeding is the standard advice from the killi community.
Mating
Moema peruensis is a true annual killi with the substrate-diving reproductive mode that defines the annual rivulid life strategy. Courtship is initiated by the male, who displays his extended, brightly coloured fins laterally to the female, circling and pursuing her through open water with short bursts of activity. Interaction between individuals is generally not highly aggressive, according to hobbyist sources, but males may compete for access to females.
When the female is receptive, the pair press together side by side and plunge downward into the soft substrate — peat, mud, or detritus — burying themselves briefly as eggs and sperm are released simultaneously in the medium. This diving spawn may be repeated multiple times across a session. The entire mating event is shaped by the ecological reality of imminent pool desiccation: eggs must be placed where they will survive months of drought.
Breeding
The eggs of Moema peruensis are buried in the substrate and are left entirely without parental care. They enter a state of arrested development — diapause — that allows them to survive the dry season in a dormant condition, hatching only when the pool refills with the return of seasonal rains. Reported incubation periods vary between sources: FishBase records approximately 9 months and Aquarium Glaser notes approximately 10 months in the hobby; It Rains Fishes states 4 months in peat under hobbyist conditions, reflecting that the full diapause duration can be modulated by the keeper. Wild incubation likely tracks the local dry season length.
In aquarium breeding, the standard method is to maintain the pair on a thick layer of peat or coconut-fibre substrate into which the fish dive to spawn over several weeks. The peat is then removed, gently squeezed damp-dry (not bone dry), packed into a sealed bag, and stored at room temperature for the incubation period — typically 3–6 months under hobby conditions before re-wetting to trigger hatching. Fry hatch within hours to days of re-wetting and are immediately free-swimming and able to take Artemia nauplii or micro-worm as first foods. Growth is rapid; the fish are sexually mature within a few months, consistent with a life history calibrated to complete a full generation within a single wet season. In captivity, individuals may live up to approximately 1.5 years — longer than wild fish, which likely rarely survive beyond a single season.
In the aquarium
Moema peruensis is kept primarily by specialist killi enthusiasts; it is not an easy or forgiving beginner's fish, but it is a rewarding one for those who understand its needs. A species-specific or single-pair setup is standard: a modest tank of 11–16 US gal with a soft, dark substrate of peat or fine substrate, dim lighting, and a generous layer of dried leaf litter to replicate the forest floor microhabitat. Filtration should be gentle — a sponge filter is appropriate; strong currents are unwelcome in the still, shallow pools this fish inhabits naturally.
Water chemistry should reflect the acidic, soft conditions of the type locality: pH in the range of 5.5–6.5, soft water with low hardness, and temperature around 75–81 °F. The fish does not tolerate hard or alkaline water well. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as killies are reliable escape artists. The key husbandry challenge is the feeding requirement: live or high-quality frozen foods must be offered regularly; this species will not thrive on dry food. For breeding, a layer of peat 2–3.1 in deep allows the characteristic diving spawning behaviour; the peat can be checked periodically for eggs and removed for incubation when sufficient time has elapsed.
Because locality-specific color strains are recognised in the hobby, maintaining collection-point records for breeding stock is considered important by killi clubs and societies. Hybridisation with related Moema species — which the fish may encounter at specialist killi events — should be avoided to preserve the genetic integrity of locality lines.
Conservation
Moema peruensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; no published assessment or assigned Red List status exists for the species. Its conservation situation is, however, of genuine concern. It is a narrow-range endemic confined to primary forest pools in the Iquitos region of Loreto Province, Peru — a geography that places it squarely in one of the more heavily pressured sectors of the western Amazon. Primary forest loss through agricultural expansion, logging, and infrastructure development around Iquitos is ongoing and directly reduces the area and connectivity of the seasonal pool habitat on which this species depends entirely.
As an annual fish adapted to small, isolated pools within intact forest, Moema peruensis is particularly sensitive to habitat disturbance. Loss of forest canopy changes pool hydrology and thermal regime; drainage or modification of floodplain terrain for agriculture can eliminate pools outright. Introduction of invasive or exotic fish to pools — a common side effect of aquaculture development in Amazonian lowlands — can also threaten small, isolated endemic populations. The hobbyist killi community represents a meaningful insurance population: captive lines maintained by killi societies preserve genetic material from locality strains that may no longer exist in the wild. A formal IUCN assessment would be a valuable first step toward quantifying the conservation status of this and several other narrow-endemic Peruvian annuals.
