Moema wischmanni is a stout-bodied South American annual killifish from the Amazon basin of Peru, reaching up to 13 cm — notably large for the genus. Like all members of the Aphyolebias lineage, it is a true annual: the adults complete their entire life cycle before seasonal pools evaporate, and their drought-resistant eggs lie buried in the substrate through the dry season, hatching only when rains return the following year. Demanding to maintain in captivity and seldom encountered outside specialist killifish circles, it remains one of the less thoroughly documented members of its genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Moema wischmanni was described by Lothar Seegers in 1983; the authority is therefore presented in parentheses because the species has since been moved from its original generic placement. The valid combination recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is Moema wischmanni (Seegers, 1983), placed within the family Rivulidae, subfamily Rivulinae — the South American killifish radiation whose annual representatives are among the most intensively studied of all killifishes in terms of life-history biology.

The genus Aphyolebias is a small South American rivulid group. The genus name is conventionally parsed as a compound of the Greek aphyes, meaning sardine or small fish, and the generic name Lebias, itself a historical killifish genus name derived from Greek. The species epithet wischmanni honours an individual named Wischmann, following the common killifish-taxonomy tradition of dedicating new species to collectors, correspondents, or patrons; the precise dedication is recorded in Seegers' original description. FishBase assigns the species a speccode of 49582 and records the distribution as the Amazon River basin, Peru.

This fish was long listed as Aphyolebias wischmanni; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Moema, and the current combination Moema wischmanni is followed here.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum total length of 5.1 in for Moema wischmanni, making it a large killifish by the standards of annual South American species, many of which mature at 1.6–2.4 in. The body plan is typical of the Aphyolebias group: moderately deep, laterally compressed, with the rounded caudal fin and relatively large scales characteristic of rivulid annuals that evolved for rapid growth and reproduction in short-lived seasonal pools.

As with other sexually dimorphic killifishes, males are presumed to be the more colourful sex, displaying the iridescent body markings and fin patterning used in courtship and territorial signalling. Females are typically plainer, with a more rounded belly when gravid. Detailed colour descriptions from live specimens are sparse in the available literature, reflecting the species' rarity in both the wild survey record and the hobby; dedicated hobbyist reports would add considerably to what is presently known.

Habitat

The species is native to the Amazon River basin of Peru — a region of lowland tropical forest and seasonally flooded grassland where the annual wet-dry cycle drives the ecology of shallow ephemeral pools. These pools form during the rainy season when river systems overflow their banks and fill low-lying depressions across the floodplain, then shrink and disappear entirely as the dry season intensifies. The fish that inhabit them must complete their life cycle — hatching, growing, spawning — within the months between inundation and desiccation.

Water conditions in such pools vary with local geology, leaf litter accumulation, and the stage of the drying cycle, but Peruvian Amazon lowland pools are commonly warm, soft, and slightly acidic to neutral. FishBase records a temperature range of 75–79 °F for this species. Dissolved oxygen may decline sharply as pools contract and decomposing organic matter increases; annual killies are adapted to these fluctuating conditions in ways that longer-lived fish are not.

Feeding

Moema wischmanni is a carnivore, as are virtually all members of the family Rivulidae. In ephemeral pool environments, the diet is opportunistic and dictated by what the pool produces: aquatic invertebrates, small crustaceans, insect larvae, worms, and other small invertebrates form the staple. The rapid growth rate necessary to reach reproductive maturity before the pool dries requires efficient protein intake, and annual killies are typically aggressive and efficient feeders relative to their size.

In captivity the species is described by FishBase as difficult to maintain, a note that likely reflects sensitivity to water quality and the challenge of replicating the thermal and chemical conditions of Peruvian floodplain pools rather than particular fussiness about food. Where the fish is established in specialist collections, it is fed a varied diet of live and frozen invertebrates — Daphnia, Artemia, chironomid larvae, tubifex — supplemented with high-quality frozen or freeze-dried alternatives.

Mating

Like all annual rivulids, Moema wischmanni spawns by 'deep diving' — both the male and female submerge completely into the soft substrate (peat, mud, or detritus) to deposit each clutch of eggs well below the surface. This contrasts with African annual killifishes such as Nothobranchius, which are 'ploughers' that press only partially into the substrate and deposit eggs at shallower depth. The deep-diving technique places the eggs beyond the reach of the drying surface soil, maximising survival through the dry season.

Courtship precedes each dive: the male displays beside the female, and if she is receptive the pair swim downward together, the male pressing close alongside her as the substrate swallows them. Spawning produces a small number of eggs per dive, and the pair resurface and may repeat the sequence multiple times. Because the fish are annual and short-lived, spawning activity is concentrated and energetically intense — the adults invest their remaining reserves in producing eggs rather than growth or self-maintenance.

Breeding

After spawning, the eggs of Moema wischmanni remain buried in the substrate and enter a state of arrested development — diapause — that allows them to survive the months-long dry season. FishBase records an incubation period of approximately three months for this species, consistent with the South American annual killifish pattern described in the killifish literature, where eggs of deep-diving species typically require longer incubation than the shallow-spawning African Nothobranchius.

In the hobby, breeding is managed on a peat or coir spawning medium: a container of damp peat is provided on the aquarium floor, the pair spawn into it over several weeks, and the peat is then removed, gently squeezed to reduce excess moisture, and stored sealed in a dark, warm location for the appropriate incubation period. After roughly three months the peat is re-wetted with soft, slightly acidic water to simulate the return of the rains; fry typically begin emerging within hours to days. The fry are small and require appropriately sized first foods — infusoria or commercial fry-food powder — before progressing to nauplii and finely shredded frozen invertebrates. Growth is fast, as it must be in an annual species.

In the aquarium

FishBase characterises Moema wischmanni as difficult to maintain, a rating that places it in the specialist rather than the general-hobbyist category. The challenges are typical of large South American annuals: sensitivity to bacterial infection, high metabolic demand for live or high-quality frozen foods, and intolerance of accumulated nitrogenous waste. Water quality management — frequent small water changes with soft, slightly acidic water at 75–79 °F — is essential.

Because the species comes from ephemeral pools with abundant cover, the aquarium should replicate those conditions as closely as practical: a dark substrate of peat or fine sand, floating plants or surface cover to diffuse light, and hiding places among leaf litter or driftwood. Males are likely territorial with one another, as is common in rivulids; a single male with one or two females in a dedicated breeding setup is the standard approach in specialist killifish collections. Mixing with dissimilar species is generally avoided, both because of the specific water requirements and because the fish's own temperament and size make community keeping complicated. The species is not available through the mainstream trade and must be sought from specialist killifish societies and breeders who maintain peat-stored egg stocks.

Conservation

Moema wischmanni has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; no formal assessment record was located during the preparation of this article. The absence of an assessment does not imply security — many South American annual killifishes are single-locality or narrow-basin endemics whose entire wild populations may occupy a handful of seasonal pools, and the species has received little dedicated field attention.

The broader threats facing Peruvian Amazon floodplain killifishes are well-documented: agricultural expansion drains and fills ephemeral pools; deforestation accelerates runoff and alters the hydrology of lowland floodplains; and road construction fragmentates habitats that small fish depend on for recolonisation after dry-season diapause. The narrow thermal and hydrological requirements that annual killies have evolved make them poorly buffered against any change that shortens the wet season, alters pool chemistry, or eliminates the soft substrate they require for egg burial. Continued taxonomic and field survey work in the Peruvian Amazon lowlands is needed to establish the distribution, abundance, and conservation needs of this species.
