Poecilia branneri is a diminutive wild livebearer from the lower Amazon of Brazil — a close relative of the familiar guppy that has never been domesticated into the riot of fancy strains its cousin produced. Known to the trade, when it appears at all, as the Lemon Guppy, it is a small, soft-water blackwater fish whose males barely reach three centimetres. It is one of those species better known from museum drawers and checklists than from the aquarium, and reliable husbandry detail on it is genuinely sparse.

Taxonomy & naming

Poecilia branneri was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1894 from material collected in Brazil. The species epithet honours Dr John Casper Branner (1850–1922), the American geologist who led geological surveys across Brazil and under whose work many of Eigenmann's South American fishes were gathered. The parenthetical authority — (Eigenmann, 1894) — reflects that the species was originally placed in a different genus and has since been transferred to Micropoecilia.

Micropoecilia is a small genus of New World livebearers within the family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae, and was for a long time treated as a subgenus of Poecilia, the guppies and mollies. Modern checklists, following P.H.F. Lucinda's 2003 treatment of the Poeciliidae in the Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America, recognise Micropoecilia at genus rank for a cluster of small, slender, guppy-like fishes of north-eastern South America. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — carries the species as Poecilia branneri, and FishBase lists it under the same combination with the order Cyprinodontiformes.

The "Lemon Guppy" name in hobby circles reflects both the fish's guppy-like form and its modest yellowish cast; it should not be confused with the many colour strains of the domestic guppy (Poecilia reticulata) sold under fancy names. Poecilia branneri is a wild species and carries none of the selective-breeding history of its better-known relative.

This fish was long listed as Micropoecilia branneri; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Poecilia, and the current combination Poecilia branneri is followed here.

Morphology

This is a very small fish. Males reach only about 1.2 in in total length, while females are larger at roughly 1.6 in — the size difference between the sexes is typical of the guppy lineage, where the colourful male is the smaller sex. The body is slender and elongate in the guppy mould, built for life among fine vegetation and leaf litter rather than open water.

As in all poeciliids, the most diagnostic external feature is sexual: mature males carry a gonopodium, a rod-like intromittent organ formed from modified anterior rays of the anal fin, used to deliver sperm to the female internally. Females retain an ordinary fan-shaped anal fin and, when carrying young, typically show the darkened gravid region near the vent common to livebearing fishes. Beyond size and the gonopodium, detailed colour and finnage data for P. branneri are sparse in the accessible literature — FishBase carries only a line drawing rather than a photograph — so descriptions of live coloration should be treated cautiously. The trophic level of about 3.0 and the small size place it firmly among the micro-predatory dwarf livebearers.

Habitat

Poecilia branneri is native to South America, in the Amazon River basin of Brazil, where it occurs in the warm fresh waters of the lower river system. FishBase classifies it as a freshwater, benthopelagic, tropical species, and the recorded thermal range of about 79–82 °F reflects the consistently warm conditions of equatorial Amazonia.

Like other small Micropoecilia of the region, it is associated with quiet, vegetated marginal waters — the kind of shallow, slow, often tannin-stained habitats that characterise lowland Amazon floodplains and coastal drainages. These are typically soft, acidic blackwaters, low in dissolved minerals and shaded by overhanging growth, where small livebearers shelter among submerged plants and leaf litter. Precise locality and microhabitat data specific to P. branneri are limited, so finer detail about its preferred waters is necessarily generalised from the genus and region rather than from dedicated field study of this species.

Feeding

No species-specific diet study for Poecilia branneri is available, but its small size, slender form and trophic level of around 3.0 mark it as a micro-omnivore in the typical guppy-relative pattern. Such fishes graze on aufwuchs — the film of algae, diatoms, detritus and micro-organisms coating plants and submerged surfaces — and pick small aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans and insect larvae from the water column and substrate.

In captivity a fish of this size and natural diet would be expected to take finely crushed flake and micro-pellets along with small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, newly hatched brine shrimp, microworm and similar tiny items, with a share of algal or vegetable matter to round out the diet. Because the species is rarely kept and poorly documented in the hobby, specific feeding recommendations should be regarded as inference from genus husbandry rather than from established practice with P. branneri itself.

Mating

Reproduction in Micropoecilia follows the livebearing pattern shared across the Poeciliidae: fertilisation is internal. The male uses his gonopodium to transfer packets of sperm to the female, and there is no external spawning or egg-laying. As in the guppy and its close relatives, courtship in these small poeciliids generally combines brief male display with persistent pursuit, and males of the lineage commonly attempt sneak inseminations as well as overt courtship.

A reproductive trait worth noting for the wider guppy group is the females' ability to store viable sperm internally for extended periods, allowing several successive broods to be produced from a single mating. Superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of more than one brood at different developmental stages — occurs in some Poeciliidae and has been reported within the Micropoecilia/Poecilia lineage, though it has not been specifically documented for P. branneri and should not be assumed for this species. Detailed courtship and mating observations for branneri are not available in the accessible literature.

Breeding

Poecilia branneri is a viviparous livebearer: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than depositing eggs. Across the genus, development is lecithotrophic to only weakly matrotrophic — the embryos are nourished mainly by yolk, with limited maternal provisioning — and broods are small, on the order of a few to a few tens of fry, in keeping with the small body size of the parents.

No verified, species-specific figures for gestation length or brood size exist for P. branneri in the sources consulted, so any precise numbers would be guesswork; the data here are genuinely sparse and are drawn from genus-level reproductive biology. What can be said with confidence is that the newborn fry, as in all livebearing poeciliids, emerge as fully formed miniature fish able to swim and feed immediately. The species' high resilience rating on FishBase — a population doubling time of under fifteen months — is consistent with the continuous, modest-brood reproduction characteristic of small guppy relatives.

In the aquarium

Poecilia branneri is rarely available and is not a beginner's livebearer in the way the domestic guppy is. It is a wild blackwater dwarf that, by the consensus on small Micropoecilia, is more demanding than the hardy fancy guppy: it does best in soft to moderately soft, warm water in the upper twenties Celsius, leaning acidic to neutral in line with its Amazon blackwater origins, and it is sensitive to water quality and to the dissolved-mineral hardness that domestic guppies tolerate easily.

A small, well-planted species tank is the sensible approach — both to give these tiny fish the cover and stable conditions they need and to keep a breeding group together without losing fry to larger tankmates. Dense planting, floating cover and gentle filtration suit a fish of this size. Because so little branneri-specific husbandry has been published, prospective keepers should treat care advice as extrapolated from the genus and from Amazon blackwater livebearer practice generally, and should prioritise clean, stable, soft, warm water over precise target numbers.

Conservation

Poecilia branneri has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated (NE), confirmed against FishBase's reference to IUCN version 2025-2, and no numeric species assessment page exists. It likewise carries no CITES or CMS listing. The species therefore has no formal conservation status, which reflects a lack of assessment rather than a positive judgement that the fish is secure.

FishBase rates it as having high resilience and low vulnerability to fishing (a vulnerability score of about 10 out of 100), consistent with a small, fast-reproducing fish of no commercial fishery interest. As with many small, narrowly documented Amazonian livebearers, the principal conservation uncertainty is simply how little is known: without targeted survey work, the size, stability and threats facing wild populations of P. branneri remain undescribed. For aquarists the practical takeaway is the standard one for any non-native livebearer — never release captive fish into local waters, where adaptable poeciliids can establish themselves all too readily.
