Sewellia media is a small hillstream loach from the fast, cool headwaters of Vietnam, belonging to the family Gastromyzontidae — the sucker-belly loaches of Southeast Asia. Its body is dorsoventrally flattened and laterally expanded into a living plunger, an adaptation that lets it cling to polished rock in torrent conditions where almost nothing else can hold on. The genus Sewellia is centred on the Annamite ranges of Vietnam and Laos, and the species within it share a reputation as among the more approachable hillstream loaches for the experienced keeper: small, active, not aggressive, and capable of spawning in a well-matured, high-flow river tank. The price of keeping one well, however, is strict water quality and a biofilm-covered, mature rockscape — without those, it starves.

Taxonomy & naming

Sewellia media was described by Nguyen & Nguyen in 2005 from Vietnam. It belongs to the family Gastromyzontidae — the hillstream and torrent loaches — and the genus Sewellia, a group of small, flattened suckerfish endemic to the fast headwaters of the Annamite mountain range and surrounding drainages in Vietnam and Laos. The genus has been placed in various broader families over the decades; FishBase currently lists it under Gastromyzontidae, the sucker-belly clade, which is treated by some authors as a subfamily of the larger Balitoridae.

A nomenclatural note: FishBase records a query about whether this species is conspecific with or synonymous with Sewellia brevis Nguyen & Nguyen, 2005, also described in the same paper. The taxonomic status relative to S. brevis remains to be fully resolved; until the Catalog of Fishes makes a definitive ruling, the name Sewellia media is treated here as valid. The genus name Sewellia honours a collector associated with ichthyological expeditions in the region.

This fish was long listed as Sewellia medius; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now treats that name as a synonym of Sewellia media, the valid name followed here.

Morphology

Like all Sewellia, this species has the strongly depressed body plan that defines the sucker-belly loaches: the belly is broad and flattened, the paired fins are spread wide and held horizontally, and the whole underside functions as a low-pressure adhesion surface for gripping smooth bedrock in fast current. The head is pointed, the eyes are set dorsally, and the body tapers to a slender caudal peduncle. The overall impression is of a small, lizard-flat fish designed from the ground up for torrent life.

The closely related Sewellia lineolata, the best-studied species in the genus, reaches roughly 2–2.2 in standard length, and the genus members are broadly similar in build; S. media is likely comparable in maximum size. The skin is nearly scaleless — embedded scales are present but tiny — which has practical implications for medication sensitivity. No erectile suborbital spine of the botiid type is present; Gastromyzontidae belongs to a different loach lineage.

Habitat

Sewellia media is a freshwater demersal fish recorded from Vietnam, and based on the ecology shared across the Sewellia genus, it inhabits shallow, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated headwater streams and tributaries in the Annamite highland region. The substrate in these environments is bedrock, sand, gravel and jumbles of boulders polished smooth by current; the water is clear, cool and saturated with dissolved oxygen.

These are not warm, still tropical streams. Hillstream loach habitat in the Annamite ranges is distinctly cooler than lowland Southeast Asian rivers, with temperatures that can drop into the low twenties Celsius. High flow is not a preference but a physiological requirement: the gill surface area of torrent specialists is partly compensated by the turbulence that forces oxygen-rich water across it; in warm, still water these fish can struggle to extract enough oxygen and weaken rapidly.

Feeding

In nature, Sewellia media grazes the biofilm — the thin mat of algae, diatoms, bacteria and organic particles — that coats rocks and gravel in fast, sunlit streams. This aufwuchs diet is scraped from hard surfaces using a subterminal, somewhat sucker-like mouth adapted for rasping rather than biting. The fish also takes small invertebrates and detritus where available.

In the aquarium, the single biggest keeper failure with Sewellia is placing them in a newly set-up or sparklingly clean tank where there is no biofilm to eat. A fish that cannot graze will decline and starve even if other food is offered, because it may not recognise sinking wafers or frozen food as edible until acclimated. The correct approach is to run a tank for several weeks before adding the fish, allowing algae and biofilm to establish on rocks and glass; supplement with sinking spirulina wafers, blanched greens such as courgette or spinach, and small frozen foods like baby brine shrimp or daphnia. Once settled, Sewellia will accept a varied diet, but biofilm grazing remains essential to their long-term health.

Mating

Reliable sexing of Sewellia can be difficult outside of spawning condition. Females of related species are typically plumper and broader across the body when gravid, and this is the most practical indicator. Males of some Sewellia are reported to develop slightly roughened tubercles on the snout or pectoral fin rays during breeding condition, which may assist in distinguishing the sexes for a keeper attempting to assemble a breeding group.

Sewellia species appear to respond to spawning cues associated with cooler water temperatures and increased flow — conditions that mirror the onset of the dry season or changes in stream flow in their natural highland habitat. A large water change with slightly cooler, well-oxygenated water is the trigger most commonly reported to precipitate spawning behaviour in Sewellia kept in river-tank setups.

Breeding

The genus Sewellia is widely regarded as among the most tractable hillstream loaches for aquarium breeding — a meaningful distinction in a family where most genera are essentially never bred in captivity. Spawning in Sewellia lineolata, the most closely studied congener, has been reported in mature, strongly-flowing river tanks by keepers who provide high turnover, a rocky substrate with gravel interstices, and a seasonal water-change trigger. Adults scatter and partially bury small eggs among gravel and stones; there is no parental care. Once fry reach approximately 0.2 in they appear to avoid predation by the adults, and small groups can be raised on biofilm and very fine foods.

Whether S. media follows the same pattern has not been specifically documented in the available sources, but given the close relationship to S. lineolata and the shared ecology, a similar approach is the reasonable starting point. The breeding facts.mode reflects this: egg-scattering among river gravel with no parental care, and a real, if modest, prospect of success in a well-set-up river tank — more so than most loach genera. Honest caveat: documented home spawnings remain uncommon, and a keeper should not acquire this fish with breeding as a primary aim.

In the aquarium

A species-appropriate setup for Sewellia media centres on high flow and a mature, algae-covered rockscape. A dedicated hillstream or river-tank aquarium with turnover of 10–15 times the tank volume per hour, strong surface agitation, and a substrate of smooth river pebbles, flat stones and gravel is the template. The tank should be run for several weeks before the fish arrive so that biofilm has had time to establish; once lit and flowing, a hillstream tank develops a living coating on every surface that is the foundation of the animals' diet.

Cool temperature is important: the target range for Sewellia spp. is approximately 68–75 °F (68–75 °F). A tank running at tropical community temperatures of 79–82 °F will slowly weaken these fish. The skin is nearly scaleless, making Sewellia sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many aquarium treatments; at the same time, the fast, clear water they require gives little tolerance for poor filtration. Keep a group of three or more — these are social fish that interact, spar lightly over grazing patches, and are more active and secure in company. They are not aggressive toward dissimilar fish and work well in a community of other hillstream species. A tank of roughly 23.6–31.5 in in length is a practical minimum for a small group.

Conservation

Sewellia media has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). No formal conservation assessment is currently available, so no threat category can be assigned here; the FishBase record confirms NE.

As with many hillstream and torrent loaches endemic to specific upland drainages of Vietnam and Laos, S. media is likely to be geographically restricted and potentially vulnerable to any degradation of its native headwater streams. Pressures on Annamite highland streams include deforestation, agricultural run-off, small-scale mining and the construction of irrigation and hydropower infrastructure that alters flow regimes and water temperatures. Fish in the genus Sewellia are collected for the ornamental trade, though the volumes are modest compared to mass-produced species. A formal conservation assessment for this species would be valuable given its restricted range and the ecological sensitivity of fast-water headwater specialists.
