Taxonomy & naming
L253 is a DATZ L-number, from the system begun in 1988 for imported loricariids that could not yet be identified. It is a trade code, so the form has no describing authority and no type specimens. The L-Wels registry lists it as Scobinancistrus sp. "L 253" and PlanetCatfish as Scobinancistrus sp. (L253); neither gives a second code. Trade names are Flash Gold Magnum Pleco and Thousand Spots Pleco, plus a German trade name, Schlanker Pfauenharnischwels. The registry names Scobinancistrus aureatus (L14), Ancistrini sp. L172 and a further Scobinancistrus sp. as similar fishes, and cites Welsatlas 2 and the Miniatlas L-Welse (both 2005).
Morphology
Registry data put L253 at about 15.5 in total length, which makes it a large pleco. The trade names allude to spotting and a gold sheen, and the German name to a slender build, but these are names, not descriptions; no pattern or diagnostic characters are on record. The similar fishes named, including the described Scobinancistrus aureatus, are the forms a description would have to separate it from.
Habitat
The registry places L253 in the Rio Xingu near São Félix do Xingu and the Rio Iriri, in Pará, Brazil, within the Amazon system, and records the water as clearwater. The Xingu and Rio Iriri ecoregions follow those two localities. Habitat place, substrate and sympatric fishes are not on record.
Feeding
Carnivore is the registry's diet class for L253, so meaty foods carry the diet in the aquarium: frozen fish and invertebrate foods and protein-rich sinking foods. Whether it eats plants is not recorded, and nothing is known of its diet in the Xingu.
Mating
The registry's sexing note is a genus-level statement for Scobinancistrus: head shape is the character to note. Scobinancistrus are typically cave spawners, the male guarding the eggs and larvae in the cave, and the registry treats the cave requirement as standard for the genus. How this applies to L253 itself is not on record.
Breeding
Captive breeding is marked as reported, with Hans Weiß cited as the source — a name rather than a publication. No spawning details are given, so clutch, timing and rearing remain unrecorded.
In the aquarium
The registry's keeping range is 79–86 °F and pH 5.0–7.0, with a recommended tank length of 59 in for a fish of this size; these are aquarium figures, not field data. Small groups are recommended, though a single fish is allowed. A large pleco from clear, flowing rivers needs well-oxygenated, clean water, rock or wood caves, and room to avoid other plecos, toward which territorial behaviour is common.
Conservation
L253 is Not Evaluated on the IUCN Red List, since an undescribed form cannot be assessed until it is named. The registry records it as on Brazil's 2012 positive list of species cleared for ornamental export and not on Brazil's 2020 negative list. Collection for the trade and river engineering affect some L-number habitats in general, but nothing specific is on record for the Xingu fish.
