Psalidodon scabripinnis is a small, silver-bodied characid from the highland and lowland drainages of southeastern South America, found across river systems in Brazil and Argentina. Long treated as a single wide-ranging species, it is now understood to represent a complex of closely related lineages distributed across distinct eastern Brazilian drainages — a situation that has prompted ongoing taxonomic revision and makes it one of the more scientifically interesting members of a famously intricate genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Psalidodon scabripinnis was originally described by Leonard Jenyns in 1842, which is why the authority appears in parentheses in the modern binomial — the species has been moved at least once from the genus in which it was first placed. The valid name, as recognised in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, remains Psalidodon scabripinnis (Jenyns, 1842). The genus Astyanax belongs to the family Characidae and is among the most species-rich genera in neotropical ichthyology, encompassing a huge range of forms from blind cave tetras to commonplace schooling fish of open rivers.

The taxonomy of this particular fish has attracted sustained scientific attention because what was long lumped as P. scabripinnis appears to be a species complex — a cluster of morphologically similar but genetically and geographically distinct lineages. Bertaco and Lucena revisited the group in 2006, recognising multiple taxa distributed across separate eastern Brazilian drainages including the Rio Paraíba do Sul and Rio Grande systems. The name P. scabripinnis sensu stricto applies to part of this complex; the full extent of the group remains a subject of ichthyological work.

In recent literature the genus name Psalidodon has been applied to much of what was formerly called Astyanax from South America (as opposed to populations reaching Central America and Mexico). Under this scheme, the species may appear as Psalidodon scabripinnis in some sources, though usage is not yet settled across all databases and the two names refer to the same fish.

This fish was long listed as Astyanax scabripinnis; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Psalidodon, and the current combination Psalidodon scabripinnis is followed here.

Morphology

Psalidodon scabripinnis is a moderately sized characid, with FishBase recording a maximum total length of 6.1 in, though most individuals encountered in the wild and in the aquarium are considerably smaller. The body form is the classic tetra shape: laterally compressed, with a deep anterior profile, a relatively large eye, and the terminal mouth and well-forked tail characteristic of open-water schooling characids.

Coloration is predominantly silvery, with a reflective lateral stripe that may show bluish or golden tints depending on light angle and the individual's condition. The fins are generally clear to lightly pigmented. The specific epithet scabripinnis — from the Latin scabri (rough) and pinnis (fins) — refers to a texture on the fin rays noted in the original description, though this character is not conspicuous in living fish and is best assessed under magnification.

Within the scabripinnis complex, different populations and recognised forms may differ subtly in body depth, scale counts, and fin-ray counts, which is part of why the group has attracted revisionary work. These meristic characters, rather than colour, are what distinguish the lineages from one another.

Habitat

The species (sensu lato) is recorded from Brazil and Argentina, occurring across a range of subtropical freshwater environments in southeastern South America. It inhabits both standing (lentic) and slow-flowing waters, with FishBase characterising it as benthopelagic — found throughout the water column but frequently near the bottom in association with substrate and vegetation.

Reported water chemistry from FishBase encompasses a moderately soft to moderately hard range: pH 6.5–7.5 and dH 0–18, with temperatures of approximately 72–79 °F, consistent with the subtropical climate of the highland and lowland drainages it occupies. In Brazil, populations have been documented from river basins including the Rio Paraíba do Sul and Tibagi basin drainages (where the subspecies P. scabripinnis paranae has been studied), reflecting the species complex's presence across multiple distinct hydrological systems.

Because the scabripinnis group comprises multiple forms tied to separate drainages, the ecological conditions across the range are not uniform: highland stream populations may experience cooler, cleaner water and stronger current than lowland lentic populations, contributing to the morphological and genetic divergence that characterises the complex.

Feeding

Like most members of Astyanax and Characidae broadly, P. scabripinnis is an opportunistic omnivore. Natural populations take a variety of food items including small invertebrates, insect larvae, plant material, and algae, exploiting whatever resources are available in their environment. The generalist feeding strategy is characteristic of the genus and helps explain its success across diverse habitat types.

In the aquarium the species accepts the same range of foods common to small characids: quality flake and micro-pellet, frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm, and vegetable-based offerings. Varied feeding produces better condition and more active fish.

Mating

Psalidodon scabripinnis follows the reproductive strategy typical of the genus and of Characidae broadly: it is an egg-scattering spawner with no pair bond and no parental care. In the wild, spawning likely coincides with seasonal cues — rainfall, temperature shifts, and river level changes that trigger aggregation and broadcast spawning among schooling individuals.

Males court females with active chasing behaviour; there is no elaborate display or territory defence. Spawning among characids is typically a brief, energetic affair in which the male drives a receptive female through fine-leaved vegetation or open water, and the pair release gametes simultaneously. Fertilised eggs scatter and sink or become lightly adhesive among fine-leaved plants. Studies of the subspecies P. scabripinnis paranae from the Tibagi basin document this reproductive mode in a Brazilian highland stream population and provide detail on the seasonality of spawning activity in natural conditions.

Breeding

In captivity, Psalidodon scabripinnis can be induced to spawn under conditions typical for subtropical characids: a well-conditioned group, fine-leaved plants or a synthetic spawning mop, and slightly reduced temperature or water change to simulate seasonal onset. The adults will eat their eggs immediately after spawning, so eggs must be removed promptly — either by removing the adults once spawning is observed, or by setting up the spawning tank with a mesh or grid above which the adults spawn and through which the eggs fall out of reach.

Eggs are small and hatch within a day or two at typical breeding temperatures. The fry are tiny and require very fine first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or proprietary liquid fry food — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. No parental care of any kind is provided; the adults take no interest in eggs or offspring. Growth is reasonably rapid under good conditions with frequent small feeds.

In the aquarium

Psalidodon scabripinnis is not one of the widely traded hobby tetras and appears in the trade only occasionally, more often in the hands of specialist collectors or aquarists interested in neotropical fish than in mainstream retail. When kept, it should be housed in a group of six or more to express natural schooling behaviour; solitary or paired fish are stressed and show poor colour.

Water conditions should reflect its subtropical origins: temperatures in the 72–79 °F range, pH in the mildly acidic to neutral band (6.5–7.5), and moderate hardness. This is a cooler-end species by tropical aquarium standards and does not need the warmer temperatures appropriate for many Amazonian tetras. A planted tank with open swimming space and gentle to moderate flow suits it well. Tankmates should be peaceful and of comparable size; fin-nipping species and large predatory fish are inappropriate companions. Hardy and undemanding once settled, it is a rewarding species for aquarists interested in the ecologically and scientifically important genus Astyanax.

Conservation

No dedicated IUCN Red List assessment has been found for Psalidodon scabripinnis under that name or under the alternative name Psalidodon scabripinnis. The species is therefore treated as Not Evaluated (NE) by the IUCN for the purposes of this account; FishBase records a Least Concern indicator, but no formal assessment document with year or criteria has been located to substantiate this.

The conservation picture is complicated by the complex's fragmented taxonomy: if P. scabripinnis sensu lato encompasses multiple distinct lineages restricted to separate river basins, then individual constituent taxa may face localised pressures — habitat degradation, water abstraction, pollution, and competition from introduced species — that a species-level assessment would obscure. Eastern Brazilian highland drainages have experienced substantial land-use change. The scientific interest in the group means that any future taxonomic resolution into multiple formal species could reveal taxa of genuine conservation concern whose status is currently unknown.
