Taxonomy & naming
The registry files the fish as Hypancistrus cf. debilittera “L 340” / “LDA 19”, which makes LDA19 a related code. The cf. is only a comparison: the registry does not identify the fish as Hypancistrus debilittera, which the atlas covers separately as L129. PlanetCatfish lists it as Hypancistrus sp. (L340) and ties no other code to the same fish. Trade names on record are Mega Clown Pleco and, in German, Roter Zebrawels. The bibliography runs to the Welsatlas 2, the Hypancistrus Fibel, the Miniatlas L-Welse, a Das Aquarium article, an article on another form among the relatives of L129, and a DATZ press review.
Morphology
Registry data put L340 at about 4 in total length. No diagnostic characters are on record, and an undescribed form has no formal diagnosis. The trade names Mega Clown Pleco and Roter Zebrawels (red zebra catfish) allude to banding and red colouring, but they are labels, not measured characters. The registry lists Hypancistrus debilittera (L129) and several other cf. debilittera forms as similar fishes: L454, L474, L527, “Río Inirida” and “Rio Guaviare”. How L340 is told from them is not set out.
Habitat
Registry data place L340 in the Río Tomo in Meta, Colombia, in the Río Orinoco system, and class the water as clearwater. No habitat place or substrate is on record. Ancistomus sp. L387 and several Panaqolus forms (Panaqolus maccus L162, Panaqolus cf. maccus L465 and Panaqolus aff. maccus L448) are listed as fishes found together with L340.
Feeding
L340 is classed as mainly an omnivore, and whether it eats aquarium plants is not recorded. Aquarium keepers generally feed omnivorous Hypancistrus on sinking pellets or wafers, frozen foods and some vegetables. Nothing is on record about its diet in the wild, and the registry names no particular foods, only the dietary class.
Mating
Sexing guidance in the registry is genus-level: in Hypancistrus males have a broader head, a slimmer waist, stronger pectoral-fin rays and more strongly developed odontodes. As is typical for the genus, spawning takes place in a cave guarded by the male. Known hybrids are listed with Hypancistrus sp. L28 and Hypancistrus sp. L411.
Breeding
Captive breeding is reported (the registry cites WA 2), and its note adds that the animals have been bred relatively often. The note calls the wide range of reported water values striking and says no specific stimulation has become known, with stronger water changes named as one possibility. Clutch size and fry details are not on record.
In the aquarium
Registry keeping figures are 77–84 °F and pH 5.5–7.5, with a recommended tank length of 23.5 in — aquarium figures, not field measurements. Small groups are recommended, though a single fish is possible. Genus-typical care applies: clean, well-oxygenated water, caves or rock for retreats, and an eye out for territorial disputes. The listed hybrids are a reminder that related Hypancistrus forms can interbreed in aquaria.
Conservation
L340 is Not Evaluated by the IUCN; an undescribed form with only a tentative comparison to a described species cannot be assessed. Its export-list status is given as not known in the registry, so none is reported. Collection for the trade and river engineering affect some L-number habitats in general, though nothing is documented for the Río Tomo population specifically.
