Taxonomy & naming
The L-Wels registry lists this fish as Hypancistrus sp. "L 262" and PlanetCatfish as Hypancistrus sp. (L262), each with no second code. L262 is a number from the L-number system that DATZ began in 1988; such a code is a trade label, and an undescribed form has no describing authority and no type specimens. The only trade name on record is the German Perlhuhn-Harnischwels, meaning guineafowl armoured catfish. The registry's literature list includes the Welsatlas 2 (2005), Seidel's Hypancistrus Fibel (2010) and the Miniatlas L-Welse (2005).
Morphology
L262 is given as about 4 in total length. Colour and pattern are not described, and the German trade name is a label, not a description. The registry lists Hypancistrus sp. L136, filed as LDA 5, among similar catfishes; that comparison is the registry's, not a statement that the two are the same fish.
Habitat
According to the registry, L262 comes from the rapids above Itaituba on the Rio Tapajós, Pará, Brazil. It records the habitat as in or near rapids and the water type as clearwater. No substrate is recorded for this form, and depth and field water measurements are missing too. Beyond that, the wild habitat of L262 is not described.
Feeding
The registry gives L262 an omnivore diet class (Allesfresser) and lists plant-eating as not known, so whether it eats aquarium plants is not recorded. Sinking pellets and wafers, frozen foods and a little vegetable matter suit that class. What the fish eats in the Tapajós rapids is unrecorded, so these suggestions are aquarium guidance and not a field finding.
Mating
The registry's sexing note applies to the genus as a whole: male Hypancistrus have a broader head, a slimmer waist, stronger pectoral-fin rays and more strongly developed odontodes. No courtship behaviour is recorded for L262. As in other Hypancistrus, the male is expected to guard eggs and larvae in a cave, and the registry lists caves as standard for the genus.
Breeding
Repeated aquarium breeding is recorded for L262, along with a known hybrid with Hypancistrus sp. L270 (also filed as LDA 76). The registry gives no source or figures. Clutch size, incubation and fry development are unrecorded for L262 itself, so the genus-typical cave-spawning habit is the only general outline.
In the aquarium
The registry's range for L262 is 79–86 °F and pH 5.5–7.5, with a recommended tank length of 23.5 in; these are aquarium figures, not field data. Small groups are recommended and a single fish is possible. Water that is clean, well oxygenated and moving, with caves or rock cover, matches both the genus and the rapids habitat given by the registry. Territorial behaviour toward other plecos is common.
Conservation
L262 has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List (Not Evaluated); an undescribed form cannot be assessed until it has a name. The registry records it as on Brazil's 2012 positive list and not on Brazil's 2020 negative list. Range and abundance are unrecorded. In general, collection for the trade and river engineering affect the habitats of some L-number fishes.
