Taxonomy & naming
L260 is a code from the L-number system that DATZ started in 1988 for imported loricariids not yet identified, and a form with only a code has no authority and no type specimens. The L-Wels registry files it as Hypancistrus sp. "L 260" and PlanetCatfish as Hypancistrus sp. (L260); neither groups it with other codes. Its trade name is Queen Arabesque, or Queen Arabesque pleco. The registry's bibliography includes the 2003 Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (Reis, Kullander and Ferraris), the Welsatlas 2, Seidel's Hypancistrus Fibel, the Miniatlas L-Welse and DATZ 3/1998.
Morphology
The registry puts L260 at about 4.5 in total length. Diagnostic characters are not described, and Queen Arabesque is a trade label, not a description. The registry lists Hypancistrus sp. L411 as a similar catfish. Like other loricariids, the body is armoured with bony plates, and small tooth-like odontodes cover the plates and fins.
Habitat
L260 is recorded from the rapids of the Rio Tapajós between Itaituba and Pimental, Pará, Brazil. The registry describes the habitat as in or near rapids, the substrate as sand with large stones or rock, and the water as clearwater, and it lists Scobinancistrus sp. L368 as found together with L260. Depth and field water measurements are not recorded.
Feeding
The registry classes L260 as an omnivore and lists plant-eating as not known, so whether it eats aquarium plants is not recorded. In aquaria, sinking pellets or wafers form the base, with frozen foods such as mosquito larvae and some vegetables alongside. The wild diet in the Tapajós rapids is unrecorded, so these suggestions come from the class and not from field data.
Mating
Sexing is a genus-level statement in the registry: Hypancistrus males have a broader head, a slimmer waist, stronger pectoral-fin rays and more strongly developed odontodes. No courtship detail is recorded for L260 itself. Spawning is expected in a cave with the male guarding eggs and larvae, which is typical for the genus; the registry rates caves as standard for it.
Breeding
The registry says L260 has been bred repeatedly in aquaria, though it names no source for the spawnings. It also lists known hybrids with Hypancistrus seideli (L333) and Hypancistrus zebra (L46). Clutch size, incubation and fry development are unrecorded. Cave spawning with the male guarding the eggs and larvae is the genus-typical pattern, a general description of Hypancistrus and not an observation of L260.
In the aquarium
The registry's keeping range for L260 is 79–86 °F and pH 5.5–7.5, with a recommended tank length of 39.5 in; this is aquarium guidance, not field data. It recommends small groups, with a single fish possible. Because the registry records the fish from rapids over sand and rock, current, good oxygenation and rock or cave cover match its habitat note. Territorial behaviour toward other plecos is common.
Conservation
L260 is Not Evaluated on the IUCN Red List; an undescribed form cannot be assessed until it has a name. The registry records it as on Brazil's 2012 positive list and not on Brazil's 2020 negative list. Range and abundance are unrecorded. In general, collection for the trade and river engineering affect the habitats of some L-number fishes.
