The sultan pleco is Leporacanthicus at its most elegant: a grey body mapped with fine black spots, dorsal and caudal fins edged in brilliant white — a flash of white that fades to yellow as the fish matures, lending juveniles an appearance so striking that the hobby has nicknamed the genus 'vampire plecos' after the fang-like anterior teeth that distinguish it from every other loricariid on the shelf. At under 4 in it is the smallest member of its genus, fitting into tanks that cannot accommodate a galaxy or a tusken pleco, but it demands the same fast, clean, carnivore-appropriate water and rejects the algae-wafer diet that kills so many loricariids in the trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Leporacanthicus joselimai was formally described by Isaäc Isbrücker and Han Nijssen in 1989 in Die Aquarien- und Terrarienzeitschrift (DATZ), volume 42, number 9, page 546, based on type material from the Rio Tapajós near Itaituba, Maloquinha, Pará State, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Leporacanthicus joselimai Isbrücker & Nijssen, 1989 as the valid name, with no synonyms recorded. PlanetCatfish assigns the code L264, the primary identification used in the hobby trade.

The species is named in honour of Dr. José Lima de Figueiredo, a Brazilian ichthyologist — the epithet joselimai being a latinisation of his forename and surname. The same DATZ publication also described several related Tapajós Leporacanthicus (including L263, L265, L266), making it one of the most productive single-paper loricariid description events in the journal's history.

Leporacanthicus joselimai is readily distinguished from congeners by its grey ground colour with small black spots and, in juveniles, prominent white tips on the dorsal and caudal fins. Catfish Codex notes that L263 (which is more brown overall) and L314 (darker brown than L263, lacking the light fin-tip markings) are superficially similar but differ consistently in fin-tip colouration and ground colour. White fin tips fade with age; Seriously Fish notes they 'fade as the fish grows and often disappear completely' in adults. Adult males show a wider, longer head than females when viewed from above, and a larger dorsal fin with more numerous odontodes.

Within the genus, Leporacanthicus is diagnosed by the characteristic unicuspid, elongated anterior teeth (the 'fangs'), the small backward-facing nuchal spine on the dorsum of the head, and placement in the tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae (Armbruster, 2004).

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 4 in standard length (SL) — PlanetCatfish gives 4 in SL — making L. joselimai the smallest Leporacanthicus species and among the most accessible members of the genus for hobbyists without very large aquaria. Catfish Codex reports a maximum of 8 in total length from trade experience, which suggests the SL/TL conversion adds roughly 100% — plausible only if total length figures include the caudal extension; the SL-based figure of ~4 in with a TL of approximately 4.5–5.5 in seems more consistent with hobbyist reports of fish reaching 'about 6 inches' (6 in TL).

The body is moderately depressed in cross-section, fully armoured in overlapping bony scutes. Ground colour is medium grey, overlaid with small, regularly distributed black spots across the head, body, and all fins. Juveniles display striking white tips on the dorsal and caudal fins — a feature that fades to pale yellow and then may disappear entirely in large adults. The fins are proportionally tall, the dorsal spine notably robust.

The genus' diagnostic anterior teeth are prominent: two enlarged, unicuspid, projecting lower-jaw teeth giving the underbite appearance from which 'vampire pleco' and 'tusken pleco' derive. These are not wood-rasping instruments but prey-seizing tools. All Leporacanthicus species additionally share a small, blunt, backward-pointing thorn-like plate on the top of the head — a character that immediately separates them from superficially similar spotted Hypancistrus and Ancistrus species.

Males have a visibly wider and longer head than females when viewed from above, a larger dorsal fin, and more numerous interopercular odontodes. Females are broader-bodied when gravid. These differences are most pronounced in mature, well-conditioned fish.

Habitat

The type locality is the Rio Tapajós near Itaituba (Maloquinha), Pará State, Brazil — a major clearwater river draining the Brazilian Shield southward into the Amazon main stem. The Tapajós is one of the iconic rivers of the Brazilian ornamental fish trade, its transparently clear, warm, soft, and modestly acidic waters hosting an extraordinarily diverse loricariid fauna that includes several Leporacanthicus species in addition to numerous Baryancistrus, Peckoltia, and other genera.

PlanetCatfish lists the distribution as covering the Amazon, lower Amazon, and Tapajós drainage systems. Collecting records from Itaituba (midTapajós) are documented in PlanetCatfish image captions. Seriously Fish describes the species as 'reophilic' — preferring rapids and other fast-flowing waters among rocks or driftwood snags, consistent with the rocky midchannel habitat characteristic of Tapajós clearwater catfish.

Water parameters at the Tapajós collection sites are typically warm (77–82 °F), very soft (conductivity often below 20 µS), and mildly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.5). PlanetCatfish gives pH 6.0–7.6 and temperature 77–81 °F; Seriously Fish concurs with 77–81 °F and pH 6.0–7.5, hardness 2–15°H. High dissolved oxygen from strong current is a consistent ecological characteristic of the Tapajós rocky rapids, and this is a non-negotiable captive requirement.

Feeding

Leporacanthicus joselimai is a carnivore-leaning species whose fang-like anterior teeth are anatomically optimised for seizing and manipulating prey — molluscs, small crustaceans, insect larvae, and similar aquatic invertebrates are the presumed natural diet in the Tapajós. This is consistent with the feeding ecology of congeners and of the broader Leporacanthicus genus, which PlanetCatfish and Seriously Fish both identify as distinctly meaty-diet oriented.

In the aquarium, meaty sinking foods should form the dietary core: frozen bloodworm, chopped mussel, cockle, prawn/shrimp, and similar invertebrate-origin foods. High-protein sinking catfish pellets are accepted and convenient for everyday feeding. Catfish Codex emphasises a 'protein rich diet consisting of crustaceans, shrimps, mussels and fish meat', with good quality dried foods as supplement. Seriously Fish notes that 'algae and other vegetable matter is not often taken', though 'the occasional slice of cucumber or courgette might be nibbled' — vegetables can be offered in small amounts for dietary variety but should not form the dietary core.

A hobbyist note worth repeating (Seriously Fish): when purchasing any loricariid from a shop, check that the belly is rounded and the eyes are not sunken — both signs of emaciation that are common in newly imported, underfed specimens. L. joselimai is particularly vulnerable to post-import malnutrition if held on inadequate diet before sale.

Mating

Courtship in Leporacanthicus joselimai follows the general Leporacanthicus pattern of cave-based territorial spawning. Males are territorial, particularly around rock crevices and cave structures that serve as spawning sites, and will display and compete aggressively with rival males; Catfish Codex notes that 'males can be territorial and aggressive towards each other', and recommends providing ample caves and hiding places when keeping multiple individuals.

The male establishes and defends a cave territory; this is the site to which he will attract or guide a gravid female. Catfish Codex notes that 'they are mature and ready to breed at a surprisingly young age/small size — even specimens under 4 in have spawned in captivity' — meaning sexual maturity can be reached before the fish has reached its maximum SL. This is consistent with the general biology of compact loricariids.

Conditioning on a rich meaty diet appears important for triggering spawning attempts. Strong water movement and high dissolved oxygen are important prerequisites, consistent with the Tapajós rapids origin. A slight temperature drop followed by a return to normal temperature, or a larger-than-usual water change with slightly cooler water, is reported to trigger reproductive activity in many reophilic Amazonian plecos and can be tried with this species. Males in breeding condition become more intensively territorial and defensive of cave entrances.

Breeding

Leporacanthicus joselimai has 8 breeding reports registered on PlanetCatfish — a relatively strong record for a specialised carnivorous Leporacanthicus, indicating the species is achievable for experienced hobbyists who provide appropriate conditions. Catfish Codex notes that 'they are bred occasionally in captivity' and that 'larger specimens can produce big clutches of 150 or so eggs'.

The mode is cave spawning with paternal brood care, following the general Leporacanthicus and Ancistrini pattern. The male guards and fans the egg clutch inside the cave. Seriously Fish describes the breeding as occurring 'in a similar fashion to Ancistrus but on a larger scale' — a reasonable summary given the cave-fanning morphology shared across the tribe. Incubation at 77–81 °F is typically 5–7 days; fry emerge with a substantial yolk sac and begin active feeding once it is absorbed.

Fry should be offered meaty micro-foods: newly hatched brine shrimp, micro-worms, and finely crushed high-protein pellets are appropriate first foods. Fry are sensitive to poor water quality; small but frequent partial water changes in the rearing tank, maintaining high oxygenation, are essential. The male should not be disturbed or removed during brooding unless he shows definite signs of consuming the clutch.

For hobbyists aiming to breed this species, a well-established tank with appropriate cave structures, strong current, temperature in the 79–81 °F range, and a diet of varied meaty foods will provide the foundation. Sexed pairs or small groups of females with a single male are the standard approach; multiple males in a small tank will fight chronically over cave sites.

In the aquarium

Leporacanthicus joselimai is one of the most accessible carnivorous plecos in the hobby — its modest adult size of under 4 in SL (roughly 4.5–6 in TL) brings it within reach of hobbyists who cannot commit to the 300-litre minimum of a full-sized Pseudacanthicus. Seriously Fish recommends a minimum aquarium of 47 in × 12 in × 12 in (approximately 30 US gal) for a single adult; a mated pair with territory separation needs more, and 40–50 US gal is a more comfortable long-term minimum.

Water conditions must be appropriate for a Tapajós reophilic species: temperature 77–81 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately soft water (hardness 2–15°H). High dissolved oxygen and noticeable current from a powerhead or spray bar are not optional — PlanetCatfish notes sensitivity to nitrites and nitrates above 50 mg/L, and Seriously Fish specifies that the water must be 'highly oxygenated, preferably with a good amount of movement'. An efficient filter to handle the waste load from a meaty diet is essential.

Furnishings should include rocky cave structures or enclosed PVC or ceramic tubes of appropriate internal diameter (just wide enough for the fish to enter, turn, and exit). Dim lighting is described by Seriously Fish as beneficial. Driftwood is acceptable as secondary furniture and biofilm surface.

This species is 'relatively peaceful' toward non-pleco tankmates (Catfish Codex) and is suitable for community setups with characins, peaceful cichlids, and Corydoras. Males can be territorial toward conspecifics and other loricariids of similar size, but with multiple cave territories and sufficient space, groups are manageable. Catfish Codex notes that L. joselimai will usually leave shrimp alone, 'with the occasional one picked off'.

The single most common cause of failure is diet: feeding this species primarily on algae wafers while it slowly starves is a pattern repeated across the genus. A confirmed meaty diet from day one of ownership, with vegetables as supplements rather than staples, is the difference between a thriving fish and a declining one.

Conservation

Leporacanthicus joselimai is assessed as Vulnerable (VU, criterion A3c) by the IUCN Red List, assessed 7 November 2018 — a notably more precarious status than most ornamental plecos in this guide, and one that demands honest explanation. The Vulnerable assessment under criterion A3c indicates a projected population decline of at least 30% over the next three generations, inferred from a reduction in the quality and extent of habitat.

The primary threat is deforestation and land-use change in the Rio Tapajós catchment, which degrades the clearwater river system that L. joselimai depends on. The Tapajós, historically one of the clearest large rivers in the Amazon basin, faces increasing sedimentation pressure from the expanding soy and cattle frontier in the Pará highlands. Additionally, the proposed and partially constructed São Luiz do Tapajós hydroelectric dam complex would, if built as planned, flood extensive rocky rapids habitat in the mid-Tapajós — precisely the kind of habitat this species occupies.

Captive breeding has been achieved and 8 breeding reports are registered on PlanetCatfish, but tank-bred stock reaching the trade in meaningful volume is limited. Given the Vulnerable status, buying captive-bred specimens where available is strongly preferable. If purchasing wild-caught stock, sourcing from established, licensed Brazilian ornamental fish exporters working within legal quotas is both legally correct and a better welfare outcome than grey-market imports. The Vulnerable status should not deter keeping this species well — it should make keeping it well an obligation.
