Taxonomy & naming
Spectracanthicus immaculatus was formally described by Chamon and Rapp Py-Daniel in 2014 in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 12, number 1, pages 1–25) as part of a taxonomic revision of the genus Spectracanthicus. The type locality is the Rio Tapajós near Itaituba, Pará, Brazil (approximately 4°16'46.56"S, 55°59'5.77"W). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Spectracanthicus immaculatus Chamon & Rapp Py-Daniel, 2014, in Loricariidae: Hypostominae.
Before formal description the fish circulated in the hobby under the DATZ L-number code L269, applied to imports from the Tapajós. In the revision, Chamon and Rapp Py-Daniel placed it in Spectracanthicus on the basis of the diagnostic dorsal-fin membrane that contacts the adipose-fin spine — a character shared within Hypostominae only with some Baryancistrus and Parancistrus, but separable from those genera by having fewer than 25 teeth (Spectracanthicus) versus more than 25 (Baryancistrus) and by having restricted gill openings (not Parancistrus). Three new species were described in the revision alongside formal delimitation of existing ones.
Spectracanthicus belongs to tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae (Armbruster, 2004). The genus name combines the Latin spectrum (a look, apparition) with the Greek akantha (thorn), an allusion to the interopercular odontodes that characterise the group.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 3 in SL (FishBase; Chamon & Rapp Py-Daniel 2014 give a maximum close to 5 in SL in some sources, but the FishBase recorded maximum for this species is 3 in SL). The body is moderately depressed and fusiform; dorsal soft-ray count 8; anal soft rays 5; vertebrae 26.
The most striking feature is what is absent: S. immaculatus has a uniformly dark grey body devoid of any dots, spots, or blotches that would be expected in congeners. All other described Spectracanthicus species carry either small to mid-sized yellowish dots (S. punctatissimus, S. murinus, S. tocantinensis) or large white spots (S. zuanoni). In S. immaculatus the ground colour is dark grey on the dorsal and lateral surfaces, grading to lighter grey ventrally.
The genus-defining dorsal-to-adipose fin membrane connection is present — a distinctive skin flap joining the posteriormost extent of the dorsal-fin membrane to the adipose-fin spine, visible in lateral view and unique within Loricariidae outside a small group of related genera. In addition to the uniform coloration, S. immaculatus is distinguished from S. punctatissimus and S. zuanoni by its pointed snout in dorsal view (versus rounded), by having a quadrangular nasal (versus L-shaped), and by a cartilage area of the basipterygia that is short (versus elongate in most congeners). Interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) are well-developed; in breeding males these are noticeably longer and more numerous, and the head broadens. Teeth are described as very slender, further separating this species from congeners.
Habitat
Spectracanthicus immaculatus is endemic to the Rio Tapajós basin, Brazil, with the type locality at Itaituba in the middle Tapajós, Pará state. The Tapajós is a major right-bank tributary of the Amazon draining the Brazilian Shield, characterised by clear, warm, softwater conditions, low conductivity, and low to moderately acidic pH. The middle Tapajós around Itaituba is known for extensive rocky rapids and clear, fast-moving water — conditions representative of shield-river loricariid habitat throughout the Amazon basin.
Microhabitat for the species is presumed to be rocky substrate within or adjacent to rapids: boulder interstices, crevice faces, and rock surfaces where current is moderate to strong and oxygen saturation remains high. Field images from around Itaituba show this stretch of the Tapajós to be a brown-water-clear-water transition zone, with good water transparency and an abundance of exposed rock during the low-water season (May–November). PlanetCatfish community members have photographed the species at the Itaituba collecting area of the middle Tapajós.
Water temperature in the middle Tapajós ranges from approximately 79–86 °F seasonally, with pH typically 6.5–7.2 and very low to moderate hardness. PlanetCatfish records temperatures of 73–81 °F for the species, likely reflecting conditions at the margins and in tributary pools rather than the main channel at peak dry-season temperatures.
Feeding
ScotCat and PlanetCatfish community sources characterise Spectracanthicus species, including S. immaculatus, as carnivorous, with a notable focus on molluscs (snails) as a primary natural food source. This aligns with the 'Rodent Pleco' common-name reference — the robust teeth that chew hard-shelled invertebrates — and distinguishes the feeding ecology of Spectracanthicus from many Ancistrini that are primarily algae/biofilm grazers.
In the natural Tapajós habitat, the species likely preys on freshwater snails and bivalves attached to or living among the rocky substrate, supplemented by invertebrates, small crustaceans, and biofilm scraped from rock surfaces. The slender-toothed dentition of S. immaculatus (slender teeth versus the more robust teeth of some congeners) may indicate a somewhat different prey spectrum or feeding technique compared to congeners, but detailed dietary studies are not available for this species specifically.
In the aquarium, a diverse carnivore/omnivore diet is appropriate: live and frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, mysis, and mussel flesh are accepted, along with high-protein sinking tablet foods and the occasional snail (which will be consumed readily). Purely vegetarian diets are not recommended; unlike most Hypostominae, Spectracanthicus should not be expected to subsist on algae wafers alone. Blanched vegetables and spirulina can form a portion of the diet but should be a supplement rather than the staple.
Mating
Courtship behaviour in Spectracanthicus immaculatus has not been formally documented in the scientific literature, and captive breeding records for the species are absent from PlanetCatfish. The genus is assumed to follow the standard Ancistrini pattern of cave-spawning with male brood-care, an inference supported by the reproductive biology known for closely related genera.
Sexual dimorphism is consistent and has been observed by aquarists. Males develop a longer and broader head than females, and during the breeding season males develop heavier growth of interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) that become visibly more pronounced. Females in breeding condition are typically broader across the abdomen when viewed from above. Genital papilla differences provide a reliable secondary indicator.
Male territorial behaviour around preferred cave or crevice sites should be expected. The formidable interopercular odontodes and the active, robust body plan of Spectracanthicus suggest that male–male interactions are physical and potentially injurious in confined tanks; ample cave structure and visual barriers help reduce aggression. A species-only tank or a large community tank with well-defined territories is preferable to a small, crowded setup when keeping multiple adults.
Breeding
No captive breeding of Spectracanthicus immaculatus has been reported in the published literature or on PlanetCatfish at time of writing. The broader genus Spectracanthicus remains under-represented in captive breeding records, likely reflecting the combination of its specific water-quality requirements, carnivorous diet, and relative rarity in the hobby.
Based on the reproductive biology of Ancistrini more broadly, S. immaculatus is expected to be a cave-spawner with paternal brood care. The male would select and defend a narrow cavity — a tight rock crevice, ceramic tube, or hollow wood — and remain with the eggs through incubation, fanning them and removing any that fungus. Clutch size in small Ancistrini plecos of this size range typically runs from a few dozen eggs.
Successful conditioning would require high water quality with excellent flow and oxygenation, warm temperatures (81–84 °F), soft to moderately hard acidic water, and a protein-rich diet. Simulating wet-dry season temperature and water-level fluctuation may help stimulate spawning. Given the species' carnivorous tendencies, live or frozen food is important during conditioning. The absence of breeding records leaves this an open challenge for dedicated keepers.
In the aquarium
Spectracanthicus immaculatus is an uncommon species in the hobby, appearing sporadically as wild-caught imports from the Tapajós. Tank-bred specimens are essentially unavailable. Demand is driven primarily by L-number collectors and those specifically seeking the novel 'spotless' phenotype.
The primary husbandry requirement is high oxygen and strong current — this is a rheophile from rocky Tapajós rapids, and stagnant or low-oxygen conditions will cause stress and suppress feeding and immune function. An external canister filter providing strong turnover, supplemented by additional powerheads or circulation pumps, is recommended. Temperature should be maintained at 79–86 °F. Water chemistry should reflect the soft, mildly acidic Tapajós environment: pH 6.5–7.2, low hardness, and very low dissolved organic load.
A tank of at least 39.5 in length is appropriate for a single specimen or a pair. Multiple rockwork caves and crevices must be provided. The tank décor should include smooth-surfaced stones (for biofilm development and foraging) and limited vegetation, as the species' burrowing and foraging activity can dislodge fine-rooted plants. The dorsal-to-adipose membrane is a notable visual feature best appreciated in a well-lit tank; care should be taken to avoid sharp objects that could snag this fin membrane.
Spectracanthicus immaculatus is generally peaceful toward dissimilar fish. Interaction with other loricariids in the same spatial niche can lead to competition and territorial disputes; avoid housing with other Spectracanthicus or similarly sized Ancistrini unless space is generous. Compatible tankmates include fast-swimming schooling fish and other species from warm, fast-flowing South American waters. This species is not recommended for the casual beginner due to its specific oxygenation and dietary requirements.
Conservation
Spectracanthicus immaculatus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List (recorded as Not Evaluated in both FishBase v.2025-2 and PlanetCatfish). The species was formally described in 2014, and no assessment has been conducted in the decade since.
The Rio Tapajós basin faces significant and escalating anthropogenic pressure. The Tapajós hydroelectric complex, a long-debated series of large dams proposed for the middle Tapajós, has been the subject of ongoing environmental and political contention. Construction of such infrastructure on the river would directly alter flow regime, water temperature, turbidity, and substrate availability in the middle Tapajós — the core range of S. immaculatus — with potentially severe consequences for a species restricted to a single river system.
Gold mining (garimpo) in the Tapajós headwaters and tributary systems, a practice with a multi-decade history in this region, introduces mercury contamination and increased sediment loads that degrade aquatic habitat. While the direct impact on S. immaculatus populations is unstudied, the species' restriction to clear, hard-substrate habitats makes it potentially vulnerable to turbidity changes. Formal IUCN evaluation and ecological surveys of the middle Tapajós loricariid fauna are warranted.
