Dekeyseria amazonica is the Amazonian complement to the better-known D. picta — a broad, pancake-flat loricariid from the flooded forests and dark, slow channels of the Solimões and lower Amazon. Where D. picta clings to fast-water rock faces, D. amazonica tends toward still-water wood and leaf litter, and its smooth scutes and subtler, more adult-stable banding make it immediately distinguishable to a careful eye. At up to 7 in standard length it is the larger of the two and, among specialists, the rarer aquarium subject.

Taxonomy & naming

Dekeyseria amazonica was described by Lúcia Rapp Py-Daniel in 1985, published in Amazoniana (volume 9, number 2, pages 180, figures 2 and 4–7). The holotype (INPA 104.4) was collected from the Janauacá complex near Manaquiri on the Rio Solimões, Amazonas state, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Dekeyseria amazonica Rapp Py-Daniel 1985, distributed across the Amazon basin in Brazil and Colombia.

The species was described alongside its congener D. scaphirhyncha in the same paper, both placed in the new genus Dekeyseria, named in honour of French zoologist and ethnologist Pierre Louis Dekeyser (1914–1984). No synonyms are recorded for D. amazonica.

The genus Dekeyseria has had a complex history. Striped colour forms — most prominently D. picta — were periodically placed in the segregate genus Zonancistrus, but a 2018 revision by Silva and Rapp Py-Daniel (Neotropical Ichthyology) demonstrated that striped and non-striped species form a natural group and all belong in Dekeyseria. The genus sits within tribe Ancistrini, subfamily Hypostominae of Loricariidae, as confirmed by the phylogenetic framework of Armbruster (2004). PlanetCatfish notes D. amazonica's similarity to Lasiancistrus but distinguishes it by its conspicuously broader body profile when viewed from above, particularly in large adults.

Morphology

Adults reach up to 7 in standard length (SL), making D. amazonica the largest species in the genus. The body is strikingly depressed and broad — more so than in most other Hypostominae — with pectoral and pelvic fins splayed wide when the fish is at rest against a substrate, producing the characteristic butterfly or flounder silhouette that defines the Dekeyseria look.

The scutes of D. amazonica are notably smooth compared to those of D. picta, which tends to have a more keeled or ridged surface texture. Ground colour in adults is dark brown to blackish, with a pattern of pale blotches or incomplete bands that is more stable with age than in D. picta; large adults do not show the dramatic pattern dissolution seen in old D. picta. The body depth is moderate, and the snout is rounded in lateral profile.

Sexual dimorphism follows the Dekeyseria pattern. Males develop substantial odontodes on the leading pectoral-fin spine — which is noticeably thickened and robust — and along the posterior flanks. The male's head is distinctly broader than the female's when the two are compared side-by-side. Females are slimmer-bodied, less heavily armed, and, when gravid, visibly distended in the abdomen when viewed from above. The genus lacks the interopercular odontode 'bristle' arrays seen in Ancistrus, relying instead on pectoral-fin spine odontodes as the primary male secondary sexual character.

Habitat

The Catalog of Fishes records D. amazonica from the Amazon basin of Brazil and Colombia, with the type locality in the Janauacá complex — a system of várzea (white-water floodplain) lakes connected to the Rio Solimões near Manaquiri, Amazonas. FishBase lists the primary range as the Solimões River basin and parts of the middle and lower Amazon. PlanetCatfish's distribution data includes both the Middle Amazon (Solimões) and Lower Amazon regions, and additional collection data from the Rio Camaiu (a Solimões tributary) appear in PlanetCatfish's photo records.

Unlike D. picta and D. scaphirhyncha, which favour fast-water rocky riffles, D. amazonica tends to be collected in slower, turbid várzea environments — flooded forest margins, submerged leaf litter, and root tangles in seasonally inundated zones. The Janauacá complex is a whitewater floodplain system with moderate conductivity and near-neutral to slightly acidic pH; dry-season conditions in the region typically show temperatures of 81–86 °F, pH 6.5–7.2, and low-to-moderate hardness. The facultative air-breathing capability documented for the genus (FishBase ref. 126274) may be particularly advantageous in the warm, periodically oxygen-depleted waters of the várzea.

The broad, flat body and sucker-mouth allow D. amazonica to press tightly against submerged wood surfaces and flat-lying debris, positions from which it rasps biofilm and algae while remaining motionless and cryptic.

Feeding

Dekeyseria amazonica is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. In its natural várzea habitat it rasps the surfaces of submerged wood, bark, and aquatic vegetation, consuming epilithic algae, cyanobacterial films, fine organic detritus, and the micro-invertebrates associated with these biofilms. The smooth mouth disc of Dekeyseria, while capable of fine algae rasping, is less specialised for hard-substrate gouging than the spoon-toothed dentition of Panaque; it is not a wood-eater in the xylophagous sense.

In the aquarium, feeding is straightforward. Blanched vegetables — courgette (zucchini), cucumber, spinach, sweet potato — are accepted readily. Spirulina wafers, algae discs, and sinking catfish pellets round out the diet. Driftwood in the tank provides both a grazing substrate and shelter; while D. amazonica does not consume wood the way Panaqolus does, it will rasp the biofilm-rich surfaces of soaked hardwood. Small protein supplements (frozen bloodworm, Artemia) can be offered once or twice a week but should not dominate the diet. The species' maximum size of 7 in SL means it requires sustained nutrition for full development in captivity, and growth can be noticeably faster when animals are fed varied, high-quality vegetable matter daily.

Mating

Reproductive biology in wild populations of D. amazonica is undocumented in the primary literature, and captive breeding records are extremely sparse — PlanetCatfish's Cat-eLog records no breeding reports as of 2026. What is known draws on the congener D. picta, which is a narrow-cavity cave spawner: males select a flat-roofed cave whose height closely matches the male's own body depth, apparently as a mechanism both to shelter the clutch and to exclude rival males physically.

By analogy with D. picta and the Dekeyseria-group generally, males of D. amazonica are expected to develop more robust pectoral odontodes during the breeding season and to guard a preferred spawning site against rivals. Given the species' affinity for still or slow-moving water in its natural habitat, conditioning likely benefits from water that replicates várzea dry-season parameters: moderate hardness, pH around 6.8–7.0, temperature 79–82 °F, with periodic large water changes to simulate rainfall-driven dilution. The broader body and larger eventual size relative to D. picta suggest that suitably large cave dimensions (a wider, flatter cavity) will be needed for successful spawning.

Breeding

As noted in the Mating section, confirmed captive breeding of D. amazonica has not been recorded on PlanetCatfish or in the literature available to this author as of 2026. The species is infrequently kept in captivity — PlanetCatfish lists only three registered keepers — and import volumes are low, limiting the pool of hobbyists with access to conditioned pairs.

Based on the cave-spawning mode documented for Dekeyseria picta and the general Ancistrini pattern, D. amazonica is expected to deposit adhesive eggs inside a flat-roofed narrow cave, with the male remaining to guard and fan the clutch through incubation. Incubation times in Hypostominae cave-spawners at 79–81 °F typically range from 5–9 days, after which larvae emerge yolk-sac attached and remain in or near the cave before dispersing to forage independently once the yolk is absorbed.

Anyone working toward captive breeding of this species would benefit from providing multiple flat cave options sized for large fish (the species reaches 7 in SL), maintaining pristine water conditions, and offering a diverse, predominantly vegetable diet to bring animals into breeding condition. Soft, slightly acidic water and a temperature increase from 75 °F to 81–82 °F may serve as a spawning trigger.

In the aquarium

Dekeyseria amazonica is a rarely encountered species in the hobby — it is occasionally imported alongside D. picta but is not distinguishable to most retailers, and many specimens offered for sale may be misidentified. A keeper who obtains genuine D. amazonica is maintaining one of the larger Dekeyseria: at up to 7 in SL (roughly 8.5 in total length), it exceeds the size of D. picta and needs a tank of at least 40 US gal for a single adult, with 65 US gal recommended if pairs or small groups are intended.

Water chemistry should reflect the Solimões origin: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness (up to approximately 12–15 dH). The species is significantly more tolerant of moderately hard, near-neutral water than blackwater Dekeyseria forms, but soft acidic water is also acceptable. Clean, well-filtered water is essential — ammonia and nitrite must be zero, and nitrate should be kept low with regular partial water changes.

The species appreciates a tank furnished with submerged hardwood, flat smooth rocks, and leaf litter. It is not plant-destructive in the manner of large Hypostomus but may uproot delicate plants when navigating the substrate. Its broad, flat body makes it a skilled hider; caves and overhangs should be provided both for security and as potential future spawning sites.

D. amazonica is generally peaceful with other fish. Intraspecific tolerance among adults of the same sex can be limited in small tanks, but with ample territory and cave options, multiple individuals coexist. Suitable tankmates include robust mid-water species such as larger tetras, cichlids of compatible size, and other bottom-dwelling catfishes that do not compete directly for flat-rock and cave territories.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Dekeyseria amazonica as Least Concern in 2018, noting its broad distribution across the Amazon basin of Brazil and Colombia with no current evidence of significant population decline. The species' várzea floodplain habitat is among the most biodiverse, and also most imperilled, of Amazonian environments: várzea forests along the Solimões and lower Amazon have experienced substantial deforestation, drainage for agriculture, and alteration by dam operations.

However, D. amazonica is not commercially exploited in significant numbers — it is a minor and infrequent ornamental import, and there is no evidence of targeted collection pressure. Its broad range across a large biogeographic region provides resilience against localised disturbance. The principal long-term risk is the progressive reduction and degradation of várzea floodplain area in the central Amazon, which reduces available shallow, vegetated slow-water habitat. Captive breeding of this species remains essentially undeveloped, so conservation-minded hobbyists who successfully breed it are contributing to a genuinely underrepresented species in cultivation.
