Taxonomy & naming
Loricaria cataphracta was described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 in Systema Naturae (edition X, volume 1, p. 307), making it one of the earliest formally named freshwater catfishes in the Linnaean system. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises this as the valid combination and as the type species of the genus Loricaria Linnaeus, 1758 — which is itself the type genus of the subfamily Loricariinae and the family Loricariidae.
The species accumulated a clutch of junior synonyms during the nineteenth century, including Loricaria carinata, L. cirrhosa, L. dentata, L. dura, L. setifera, and Plecostomus flagellaris; all are now subsumed under cataphracta. The species was formally redescribed by le Bail et al. (2000) using material from French Guiana, which clarified morphological limits and confirmed that the Maroni (Marowijne) River at Galibi, Suriname, is the type locality (approximately 5°45'N, 54°00'W).
Within the subfamily Loricariinae, Loricaria belongs to the tribe Loricariini (Armbruster, 2004), a group of largely open-substrate, carnivorous whiptails distinguishable from the algae-grazing Harttiini (to which Farlowella and Sturisoma belong) by diet, microhabitat, and mouth morphology. On PlanetCatfish this species carries the provisional L-number L062, assigned to specimens exported from Suriname.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 11.5 in standard length (SL) — about 14–15 in total length including the caudal filament — placing them among the larger members of their genus. The body plan is the definitive loricariine silhouette: strongly flattened ventrally, narrow in cross-section dorsally, and armoured from snout tip to tail base in overlapping bony scutes arranged in longitudinal rows. The tail bears a characteristic whip-like caudal filament extending beyond the fin rays.
Coloration is brown to tan above with indistinct darker mottling; the ventral surface is pale cream. The most distinctive external feature of adults is a conspicuous fringe of soft, fleshy barbels ('goatee bristles') projecting from the underside of the rostrum and lower lip — the characteristic that gives rise to the common name 'goatee whiptail catfish'. These are present in both sexes but are more elaborate in breeding males.
The mouth is subterminal and disc-like, lined with numerous fine, bicuspid teeth adapted for scraping detritus, biofilm, and organic matter from sandy and silty substrates — a different feeding guild from the wood-rasping Panaqolus or the algae-grazing Farlowella. The dorsal fin is moderately elevated, with a strong locking spine. Sexual dimorphism is moderate: breeding males have broader heads, more pronounced rostral bristles, and the enlarged fleshy lip pads used to carry the egg mass.
Habitat
Loricaria cataphracta is distributed across the Amazon River basin and the coastal river systems of the Guianas — including records from the Suriname, Maroni (Marowijne), and Essequibo drainages as well as the lower Amazon and the Rio Nhamundá. The species occupies a broad latitudinal range roughly between 8°N and 8°S.
In the wild it is primarily a river-dwelling species of lowland and sub-montane environments, favouring slow to moderately flowing channels with sandy or fine gravel substrates and abundant leaf litter. It is notably demersal and spends most of its time pressed flat against the bottom. FishBase reports it as occurring also in ponds, suggesting tolerance of low-flow environments. The genus Loricaria is capable of facultative air-breathing, an adaptation documented across the Loricariinae that allows survival in seasonally hypoxic floodplain pools and the stagnant waters typical of the Guiana lowlands during dry-season contraction.
Water chemistry across its range varies with the predominant river type. Guiana coastal rivers tend to be softer and more acidic than mainstream Amazon whitewater; the species appears tolerant of a reasonably broad chemistry envelope. A tropical temperature band (approximately 75–82 °F) covers most of its distribution.
Feeding
Loricaria cataphracta belongs to the carnivorous Loricariini rather than the algae-grazing Harttiini, and its fine, bicuspid teeth and mobile lower lip are adapted for scraping fine organic matter, biofilm, detritus, and small invertebrates from sandy substrates. FishBase reports a trophic level of 3.3 (±0.2), consistent with a significant invertebrate component in the diet. Stomach contents in related Loricariini frequently include midge larvae (chironomids), small worms, and organic detritus; the species likely forages nocturnally, sifting sediment with its sensitive barbels.
In the aquarium, this distinction from algae-grazing plecos matters: L. cataphracta will not perform useful algae removal. It does best on sinking meaty foods — high-quality catfish sinking pellets, frozen or live bloodworms (chironomid larvae), tubifex, and daphnia — supplemented with algae wafers or blanched vegetables to round out the diet. As with all Loricariini, it is a slow, deliberate feeder; fast competitors should not be in the same tank. Sand substrate allows the fish to engage natural sifting behaviour and reduces stress.
Mating
Loricaria cataphracta is one of the genera within Loricariini known to practise lip-brooding — an unusual reproductive strategy among catfishes in which the male carries the fertilised egg mass adhered to an enlarged, fleshy lower lip structure rather than guarding them in a cave or on a flat surface. FishBase notes that 'eggs are carried stuck to the breast and abdomen of both male and female parents' (citing Baensch & Riehl, 1991), though multiple sources including Monks (TFH, 2011) confirm males as the primary brooding sex in Loricaria, with larger lips in males being the reliable secondary sexual character.
Mature males are recognisable by their broader head profile, more elaborate rostral fringes, and — critically — the markedly enlarged, pad-like lower lip that creates the carrying surface for the clutch. Females have narrower heads and a less developed lower lip. Aquarium spawning events are rare and not well-documented in the hobby: PlanetCatfish lists no captive breeding reports for this species. The eggs are laid on a substrate — likely flat sand or leaf litter — fertilised, and then gathered by the male.
Breeding
The lip-brooding reproductive mode of Loricaria makes captive breeding an unusual event. The male gathers the fertilised eggs into a compact mass held against the underside of the rostrum by his enlarged lip pads and likely by a thin secretion of mucus. He then carries this clutch continuously, presumably fanning water across it with gentle movements, until the eggs hatch. Clutch sizes in genus Loricaria are relatively small — typically a few dozen eggs — reflecting the energetic cost of the carrying strategy.
No captive breeding report is currently registered on PlanetCatfish for this specific species. What is known from related lip-brooding Loricariini (including Loricaria and Pseudohemiodon species studied in the wild and occasionally bred in large, naturalistic setups) is that pairs should be conditioned on live and frozen invertebrate foods, temperatures should be in the mid-to-lower tropical range (around 75–79 °F), and a sandy, spacious tank with low flow areas mimicking natural leaf-litter floodplain environments gives the best chance of triggering spawning.
Fry, once they exhaust their yolk sac, are reared on microworms, baby brine shrimp nauplii, and finely powdered invertebrate-based foods. As in other whiptails, brood sizes are modest and fry growth is relatively slow.
In the aquarium
Loricaria cataphracta is an infrequently traded species — primarily seen as wild imports from Suriname and French Guiana under the L062 code. Its large adult size (up to ~14 in total length) means it needs a spacious aquarium: a tank of at least 40 US gal is a minimum for a single specimen, and 200+ litres is more appropriate for any long-term residence. The substrate must be fine sand: this species forages by pressing its mouth flat to the bottom and sifting sediment, and coarse gravel abrades the delicate ventral scutes and barbels.
Water parameters should reflect its Guianan/Amazonian origins: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Good filtration and regular partial water changes are essential; the fish is sensitive to elevated nitrates, especially in conjunction with warm temperatures.
Tankmates should be chosen with care. As a Loricariini, L. cataphracta is a slow, peaceful bottom-dweller that will be outcompeted for food by aggressive or fast-moving species. Avoid large cichlids, boisterous loaches, and other pushy bottom-feeders. Medium to large, peaceful tetras, hatchetfish, and Corydoras catfish are compatible. Other Loricaria or Rineloricaria whiptails can be housed together in adequate space. The species is mainly crepuscular to nocturnal, spending daylight hours largely motionless on sandy open areas or beneath leaf litter.
The goatee fringes, whip tail, and armoured body make this an attention-getting display fish despite its cryptic coloration. It rewards patient observation: the sifting feeding behaviour and slow, deliberate locomotion (using the pectoral fins and caudal tip alternately as props) are characteristically loricariine and unlike almost any other aquarium fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Loricaria cataphracta as Least Concern in November 2020, reflecting its broad distribution across multiple river systems in the Amazon basin and Guianas and the lack of evidence of significant population decline. It faces the same generalised habitat threats as other Amazonian freshwater fishes — deforestation, sedimentation from agricultural and mining activity, and localised pollution — but none of these are considered sufficient to affect the species at range-wide scale.
Loricaria cataphracta is not a significant target of the ornamental fishery; it appears occasionally as a by-catch or opportunistic export under the L062 code from Suriname and French Guiana. There is no captive breeding programme that would reduce wild-collection pressure. The species' tolerance of a range of lowland river habitats and its wide natural distribution make it resilient compared to many narrow-range loricariids.
