Named for the muddy waters it calls home, Peckoltia caenosa is a medium-sized Orinoco pleco with an unusually strong association with slow, turbid lowland streams — a niche that sets it apart from the rock-face and rapids specialists that dominate its genus. The mottled brown vermiculate pattern that camouflages it against muddy substrates, and its habit of sheltering inside submerged hollow logs by day, reflect an animal finely tuned to the flooded llanos landscape of central Venezuela.

Taxonomy & naming

Peckoltia caenosa was described by Jonathan W. Armbruster in 2008 in Zootaxa volume 1822 (pages 1–76), a comprehensive revision of the genus Peckoltia that also included a reanalysis of the phylogeny of Hypostominae genera. The type locality is Caño Maraca, a tributary of Caño Igues within the Río Portuguesa drainage, collected on the Guanare-Guanarito road at kilometre 60, at approximately 8°49'39"N, 69°20'42"W, in Portuguesa state, Venezuela. This places the type locality in the Venezuelan llanos, within the Río Orinoco drainage.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists Peckoltia caenosa as a valid species without synonyms; it was a new description, not a replacement name. FishBase records no synonymy. Two LDA numbers have been assigned to this species: LDA020 and LDA021, both appearing in the German magazine 'Das Aquarium' for fish imported from the same collecting area before the species was formally described.

Peckoltia Miranda Ribeiro, 1912 is a genus of Ancistrini within Hypostominae, diagnosed by Armbruster (2004, 2008) by the dentary tooth rows meeting at an angle of 90° or less, combined with absence of the synapomorphies of allied genera. Molecular work by Lujan et al. (2015) supported an expanded, monophyletic Peckoltia. Armbruster (2008) diagnosed P. caenosa as distinguishable from all congeners by having dark vermiculations on the abdomen (versus spots, long lines, or a plain abdomen in other species), combined with a mottled rather than spotted or saddled dorsal and lateral surface.

Morphology

Maximum recorded size is 6 in SL (Armbruster 2008, via FishBase), making P. caenosa one of the larger Peckoltia species — substantially bigger than the popular P. compta or P. vittata, and at the upper end of a genus that otherwise spans roughly 2.5–6.5 in. The body is elongated, dorsoventrally flattened, and fully armoured with overlapping bony scutes in the typical loricariid pattern. The fins are well-developed: dorsal fin with 2 spines and 7 soft rays, anal fin with 1 spine and 4 soft rays.

The coloration is the distinguishing character: the dorsal and lateral surfaces are broadly mottled rather than spotted or patterned with discrete saddles. The abdomen bears dark vermiculations (worm-like markings) rather than the separate spots or uniform colouration of congeners — the diagnostic feature per Armbruster's 2008 key. The head carries small spots that tend to coalesce into vermiculations. The overall impression is a muddy, cryptic pattern that matches the turbid, silt-laden substrate of its preferred habitat.

Sexual dimorphism follows the Peckoltia pattern: males develop small odontodes on the leading pectoral fin rays and on the posterior half of the body; females remain unadorned and are noticeably broader across the body just behind the pectoral fins when viewed from above. Gravid females become distinctly wider-bodied, and this dorsal-view broadening is the practical sexing character in the absence of odontodes.

Habitat

Peckoltia caenosa is known from the llanos of central Venezuela, in river systems draining into the middle Río Orinoco. The IUCN range description specifies occurrence in the Río Portuguesa and Río Igués (foothills of the central Venezuelan Andes), as well as in the main channels of the rivers Arauca and Apure in the western lowlands, and in the rivers Orituco and Manapire, including floodplain lakes of the lower Orinoco (Armbruster 2008 distribution data, cited in IUCN assessment 2017). FishBase records the latitudinal range as approximately 6–10°N, 59–68°W.

The key habitat descriptor from Armbruster (2008) and FishBase is unambiguous: the species inhabits slow-flowing muddy streams and is encountered inside submerged, hollow logs during the day. The IUCN habitat assessment confirms it occupies hollow logs submerged in streams of slow to moderately swift current with muddy substrate, as well as the littoral zones of floodplain lakes with muddy bottoms and submerged logs.

This is an unusual combination for Peckoltia, most of which favour rocky, well-oxygenated rivers. The llanos floodplain rivers of Venezuela are markedly different from the black-water or clear-water Amazonian streams favoured by other genus members: slow-moving, often turbid or white-water, oxygen-variable, and subject to extreme seasonal flooding. The facultative air-breathing capacity attributed to the genus enables survival in these conditions.

Feeding

No published gut-content analysis exists for Peckoltia caenosa specifically. The ventral suckermouth anatomy and fine teeth of Peckoltia are consistent with an omnivore-grazer strategy: rasping attached algae, periphyton, and biofilm from submerged surfaces (logs, roots, and mud-coated rock), with opportunistic consumption of fine detritus, leaf litter particles, and small invertebrates.

The muddy-stream habitat likely means that suspended and benthic algae are available in quantity, and that detritus forms a significant part of what is available on the substrate. Studies on Hypostominae feeding ecology in lowland Orinoco tributaries generally show gut contents dominated by algae and fine organic detritus, with seasonal shifts depending on flood state. During inundation, the fish may exploit the leaf litter and terrestrial organic input of flooded forest margins.

In aquaria, a diet of algae wafers, sinking spirulina pellets, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach), and occasional small invertebrate foods such as frozen bloodworm or daphnia is appropriate. The species is not a xylophage, but driftwood in the tank provides a natural grazing surface.

Mating

No direct observations of courtship behaviour have been published for P. caenosa. The species is a cave spawner (PlanetCatfish), consistent with the rest of the Peckoltia and Ancistrini tribes. In all likelihood, males establish territories centred on hollow log sections, root tangles, or crevices in the substrate, and court females by patrolling and displaying from those sites.

The pronounced odontode development on males (pectoral spines and posterior body) in Peckoltia is thought to serve primarily in male-male competition for access to spawning cavities rather than in direct combat. The genital papilla provides a reliable indicator of sex: the male's is small and pointed; the female's, when ripe, is larger and rounded.

The IUCN assessment notes that the species' habitat quality is in continuing decline, and the EOO is approximately 80,574 mi². Despite this, some sub-populations appear stable. Spawning triggers in the wild likely correlate with the Venezuelan wet season (May–November), when water levels rise and temperature and oxygen conditions shift.

Breeding

Peckoltia caenosa has no registered breeding report on PlanetCatfish. The species is categorised as a cave spawner, with the typical loricariid pattern of paternal care: the male selects and guards a cavity, the female deposits eggs inside, and the male remains to fan and protect the clutch through to fry emergence.

For aquarium breeding attempts, the most productive approach based on congener reports would be to provide tight-fitting hollow logs or ceramic breeding tubes as potential spawning sites, one per male, and to condition adults on a high-quality varied diet. Mimicking the seasonal cue of rising temperature and water level (a partial water change with slightly cooler water to simulate rainfall onset, followed by a temperature rise) has proven effective in triggering spawning in related genera.

The relatively large adult size (up to ~6.5 in SL) means clutch sizes may be sizeable — likely in the range of 30–80 or more eggs, though no data exist for this species specifically. The male should not be disturbed during incubation; disturbance can lead to egg abandonment.

In the aquarium

Peckoltia caenosa trades under the registration numbers LDA020 and LDA021 as 'Mud Pleco'. It appears occasionally in specialist pleco lists, particularly when Venezuela is accessible to ornamental fish collectors, but it is not a common export. Its muddy-substrate niche makes it less photogenic than the high-contrast Peckoltia species from clear-water rivers, which may explain its low commercial profile relative to its registration.

At up to about 6.5 in SL, it is a medium-sized pleco — larger than P. compta or P. vittata, roughly comparable to P. sabaji. A single adult requires at minimum a 150-litre tank; a group with multiple males needs 55–65 US gal or more, with ample cave territory for each male. The species' origin in slow, turbid lowland rivers means it is tolerant of a wider range of water conditions than highland stream specialists: temperatures of 75–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.6, and soft to moderately hard water are appropriate. Strong filtration to maintain low ammonia and nitrite is important, but the fish does not require the high-velocity current of riverine species.

Furnish with multiple hollow logs or tight-fitting caves. A substrate of fine sand with some silt-like organic matter mimics the natural environment. Tankmates should be reasonably robust; PlanetCatfish notes that this species can coexist with a very wide array of companions — safe with small fish and shrimp, and resilient enough to tolerate the attention of most cichlids except the very largest. Males should be given enough space and cave options to avoid persistent territorial aggression.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Peckoltia caenosa as Least Concern in 2017 (IUCN 2017, assessment date 29 May 2017). The justification notes that although some threats exist for the species, the extent of occurrence (EOO) is large — calculated at approximately 80,574 mi² — and some sub-populations face no significant threats. The assessment also records a continuing decline in habitat quality.

The species is endemic to Venezuela, specifically to the Orinoco drainage. The llanos of Venezuela, while vast, face ongoing pressures: agricultural intensification for cattle ranching and soy cultivation alters drainage patterns and water quality; oil extraction in the western llanos (Barinas, Portuguesa, Apure states) risks spill contamination; and fishing pressure on the major Orinoco tributaries has indirect effects on food-web dynamics. The slow, muddy streams this species depends on are particularly vulnerable to increased sedimentation and eutrophication from fertiliser run-off.

No specific conservation programme targets P. caenosa. It does not appear on CITES appendices and is not considered commercially exploited in significant volumes. Monitoring of the Orinoco llanos ichthyofauna, which is less intensively studied than the Amazonian fauna, would benefit our understanding of this and many co-occurring endemics.
