Taxonomy & naming
Peckoltia sp. L008 is a coded form. The L-number system was started by the German magazine DATZ in 1988 for imported loricariids that could not yet be identified; an undescribed form has no authority and no type specimens. The registry lists it as Peckoltia sp. "L 8" and PlanetCatfish as Peckoltia sp. (L008); no other codes are given. Trade names on record are Leopard Peckoltia and the German Leopard-Zwergschilderwels, "leopard dwarf shield catfish". Registry references are few: the Welsatlas 2 (2005) and the Miniatlas L-Welse (2005).
Morphology
About 6 in total length, according to the registry. The characters that separate L008 from similar fishes are not on record. "Leopard" in the trade names suggests a spotted pattern, but it is a name, not a description. The registry lists two similar catfishes: Peckoltia oligospila (L6) and Peckoltia simulata, both described species. Bony plates with odontodes cover the body, as in other loricariids.
Habitat
L008 comes from the Rio Pará drainage near Oeiras do Pará, in Pará state, Brazil, and the registry classes the water as clearwater. This Rio Pará is the estuary arm south of Marajó Island, not the Paraná; the registry enters the river system as "Atlantic NE". No substrate or cover details are recorded, and no fishes are listed as found together with it.
Feeding
The registry classes L008 as an omnivore (Allesfresser) but records nothing on whether it eats plant matter. In an aquarium that suggests a varied mix of sinking pellets and wafers, vegetables and some frozen foods, but no feeding detail specific to L008 is on record, and nothing is claimed about what wild fish eat.
Mating
For sexing, the registry's genus-level note points to odontodes on the rear body, caudal peduncle or upper caudal-fin ray. Peckoltia are typically cave spawners in which the male guards the eggs and larvae, and the registry's genus-level cave note reads "standard". Neither point has been recorded for L008 itself.
Breeding
The registry records no aquarium breeding of L008; its breeding status is unknown. Cave spawning with male brood care is the pattern expected from the genus, but nothing is documented for this form, and clutch size, incubation and rearing are all unknown. The registry lists no hybrids for it.
In the aquarium
The registry's keeping range is 77–84 °F and pH 5.5–7.5, with a recommended tank length of 39.5 in; these are aquarium guidance, not field measurements. Small groups are recommended, though a single fish is possible. As with the rest of the genus, expect a need for clean, well-oxygenated water and caves or crevices, and territorial behaviour toward other plecos.
Conservation
L008 is Not Evaluated on the IUCN Red List; an undescribed form cannot be assessed until it has a name. The registry records that it is not on Brazil's 2012 positive list of species cleared for ornamental export, and not on the 2020 negative list. Collection for the trade and river engineering affect some L-number habitats in general; nothing specific is on record for this form.
