Taxonomy & naming
Sturisomatichthys frenatus was originally described by George Albert Boulenger in 1902, from type material collected at Salidero in Ecuador, at an elevation of 328–656 ft on the Pacific versant. Boulenger placed the species in the genus Loricaria as Loricaria frenata (using the feminine form to agree with the then-feminine gender of Loricaria). The species was subsequently transferred to Sturisoma as Sturisoma frenatum, and later to its current position in Sturisomatichthys. Both Sturisoma frenatum and Loricaria frenata are now treated as synonyms of the valid combination Sturisomatichthys frenatus, as recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS). FishBase assigns the species code 50525.
A gender-concordance discrepancy exists in the literature: FishBase and CoF treat the epithet as neuter (frenatum, matching Sturisomatichthys as a neuter genus), while the IUCN Red List assessment (Jimenez-Prado, P. 2016, e.T66601913A66651421) uses the masculine form frenatus. The original Boulenger 1902 description used the feminine frenata (for Loricaria). The form frenatum, reflecting the current genus assignment, is followed here.
The epithet frenatum derives from the Latin frenum (bridle or rein), likely alluding to a lateral stripe or banding pattern on the head or body reminiscent of a bridle strap, though Boulenger's original description details are not accessible through the sources consulted.
The genus name Sturisomatichthys is composed of the German sturio (sturgeon), Greek soma (body), and Greek ichthys (fish): 'sturgeon-bodied fish'. The molecular phylogenetic placement of Sturisomatichthys within Loricariinae was examined by Covain et al. (2016, Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution 94: 492–517), which serves as the main phylogenetic reference for the genus on FishBase.

Morphology
Sturisomatichthys frenatus reaches a maximum recorded size of 9.4 in standard length (SL) (Ferraris 2003, via FishBase), making it a large loricariid by any measure. As with all Loricariinae, the body is markedly dorsoventrally flattened and elongated, with the characteristic narrowing caudal peduncle that in breeding males may extend into filamentous caudal rays. The dorsal and lateral surfaces are covered in keeled bony scutes; the ventral surface is unplated.
The species co-inhabits Ecuadorian rivers with Chaetostoma spp. and Rineloricaria jubata, according to IUCN field data — a habitat guild that suggests moderate-to-fast flowing riverine conditions with hard substrates. The IUCN description characterises the species as a benthic detritivore in permanent rivers with moderate flow.
No detailed morphological diagnosis beyond the original Boulenger (1902) description is accessible through the sources consulted. FishBase assigns a trophic level of 2.4, consistent with a diet of algae, periphyton, and fine detritus. Habitat
Sturisomatichthys frenatus is endemic to Ecuador, restricted to the Santiago-Cayapas basin (Río Cayapas drainage) on the Pacific versant at low to moderate elevation. The type locality is Salidero, at approximately 328–656 ft elevation. The single confirmed recent collection locality is the Cachaví River, a tributary of the Cayapas, near the Cachaví community — one specimen recorded across 79 surveys conducted over two field seasons (IUCN assessment, Jimenez-Prado 2016).
The Cayapas River drains the Esmeraldas Province lowlands of northwestern Ecuador, a region historically covered by Pacific coastal rainforest (Chocó bioregion). The river system is characterised by permanent flow, moderate current, and hard-substrate habitats where periphyton and benthic detritus accumulate. Field notes from the IUCN assessment record co-occurrence with Chaetostoma spp. (suckermouth hillstream loricariids) and Rineloricaria jubata (a whiptail), suggesting clear-water, oxygen-rich conditions with rocky or gravelly substrates.
No published water chemistry data (temperature, pH, conductivity) are available for S. frenatus localities. The Chocó-Pacific coast lowland streams are typically warm and soft to moderately hard, but parameters specific to the Cachaví drainage have not been published for this species.
The area of occupancy (AOO) is estimated at just 6 mi² based on a 3×2 mi grid cell over the single known locality — the lowest plausible occupied area estimate under IUCN methodology.
Feeding
Sturisomatichthys frenatus is described by the IUCN assessment as a benthic detritivore, consistent with its trophic level of 2.4 on FishBase. Loricariinae of this body plan typically feed by scraping algal biofilm, periphyton, and fine organic detritus from hard surfaces — rocks, submerged wood, and consolidated substrate — using the rasping mouth and numerous small teeth characteristic of the subfamily.
No species-specific dietary studies are available for S. frenatus, and the species has no aquarium history from which feeding observations could be drawn. The inferred diet of periphyton and detritus is consistent with the habitats occupied (permanent rivers with moderate flow and hard substrates) and with the feeding ecology of related Sturisoma and Sturisomatichthys species for which aquarium observations exist.
Mating
No courtship or mating observations are available for Sturisomatichthys frenatus. In closely related genera within Loricariinae — particularly Sturisoma — courtship involves male competition for preferred spawning surfaces (smooth rock faces or broad hard substrates with moderate current overhead), with dominant males defending and displaying to females using elongated snout and body odontodes developed during the breeding season.
The extreme rarity of S. frenatus in both field collections (one specimen across 79 surveys) and the complete absence of aquarium records preclude any direct observations of mating behaviour in this species.
Breeding
No breeding records exist for Sturisomatichthys frenatus, in captivity or in the field. Reproductive biology is inferred solely from the broader Loricariinae pattern: flat-surface spawning on smooth, hard substrates, with adhesive eggs deposited in a monolayer and guarded by the male through the incubation period. In Sturisoma and related genera, the male fans the clutch continuously, removes infertile eggs, and guards newly hatched fry. Fry in related species are relatively precocial and begin grazing periphyton surfaces within days of hatching.
Given the extreme rarity of this species and the total absence of aquarium records, captive breeding has never been attempted or reported.
In the aquarium
Sturisomatichthys frenatus is entirely unknown in the aquarium hobby. PlanetCatfish holds no Cat-eLog entry for the species, and no L-number has been assigned. The IUCN assessment notes that the species is not currently part of the ornamental fish trade, though it acknowledges that a species of this size and form could potentially have ornamental value if populations were ever large enough to sustain collection.
No husbandry guidance can be offered. Any future encounter with this species should be treated with the highest conservation sensitivity. Given its Critically Endangered status and the known population comprising what may be an extremely small number of individuals in a single river system, collection for the aquarium trade would be wholly inappropriate without a managed breeding programme operating under strict regulatory oversight.
Conservation
Sturisomatichthys frenatus is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) under criterion B2ab(iii) on the IUCN Red List (Jimenez-Prado, P. 2016, e.T66601913A66651421; assessed 10 October 2014). This is the most severe threat category below Extinct in the Wild, and it reflects an area of occupancy estimated at just 6 mi² combined with ongoing, documented decline in habitat quality.
The species is known from a single confirmed recent locality — the Cachaví River in the Cayapas drainage of Esmeraldas Province, northwestern Ecuador — with one individual recorded across 79 survey events spanning two field seasons. Whether additional populations persist elsewhere in the Santiago-Cayapas or adjacent Pacific-versant drainages is unknown; the IUCN assessment explicitly calls for broader range surveys as the highest-priority research need.
The threats driving its decline are severe and ongoing. Gold mining operations in the Esmeraldas and Cayapas watersheds introduce mercury contamination and heavy sedimentation from tailings runoff, directly degrading the clear-water, hard-substrate habitats the species requires. Conversion of Pacific coastal rainforest and riparian zones to oil palm cultivation — now one of Ecuador's most rapidly expanding agricultural land uses — removes the forest cover that buffers water quality, stabilises banks, and generates the organic inputs that support the benthic food web.
The species may occur within a protected area — the IUCN assessment notes this as unconfirmed — but even nominal protection provides little defence against the diffuse and pervasive threats of small-scale mining and agricultural conversion operating at landscape scales across the Chocó-Pacific lowlands. No targeted conservation measures are currently in place for S. frenatus. The assessment calls urgently for population surveys, habitat monitoring, and assessment of mining and agriculture impacts on the Cayapas drainage as the minimum actions needed to understand whether this species still persists in viable numbers.
