The royal twig catfish is the largest and most architecturally striking member of the trans-Andean whiptail lineage — a 26-cm loricariid that has evolved to look more like a piece of current-polished driftwood than a fish. Its elongated rostrum, pencil-slim body, and filamentous caudal streamers make it instantly recognisable, while its gentle temperament and paternal egg-guarding on open surfaces make it one of the most rewarding of all pleco groups to breed.

Taxonomy & naming

Sturisomatichthys panamensis was originally described as Loricaria panamensis by Carl H. Eigenmann and Rosa Smith Eigenmann in 1889, published in the Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences (Series 2, volume 2, page 34), from type material collected in Panama. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Sturisomatichthys panamensis, with Loricaria panamensis and Sturisoma panamense as synonyms.

The genus question — Sturisoma or Sturisomatichthys — is the most important nomenclatural issue for this species. Covain et al. (2015, Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution 94:492–517) provided the molecular phylogenetic evidence underpinning the current generic assignments: Sturisoma is restricted to cis-Andean species (east of the Andes), while Sturisomatichthys encompasses the trans-Andean lineage (west of the Andes and Pacific/Caribbean coastal drainages). Since S. panamensis is a Pacific-slope/Caribbean-slope species of Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador, it belongs definitively in Sturisomatichthys. Londoño-Burbano & Reis (2019, Copeia 107(4):764–806) provided the most recent comprehensive taxonomic revision of Sturisomatichthys, confirming panamensis as a valid species within the genus.

The genus Sturisomatichthys was erected by Isbrücker and Nijssen in 1979 and holds approximately 15 species, all trans-Andean. No DATZ L-number has been assigned to S. panamensis.

Morphology

Adults reach 10 in standard length (SL) — making S. panamensis the largest member of its genus and a genuinely impressive aquarium species. Total length including the caudal filaments can exceed 12 in. The body is extremely slender and depressed, with a long, spatula-tipped rostrum that extends well ahead of the eyes and mouth. The caudal fin has elongated dorsal and ventral rays that form streamers in mature adults, particularly in males. This body plan — torpedo-slim, flat-bottomed, long-snouted — is an extreme adaptation to fast, shallow, rocky stream environments where grip, current resistance, and navigation of narrow passages all matter.

Sturisomatichthys panamensis can be distinguished from similar Sturisoma species by the characters refined by Londoño-Burbano & Reis (2019) and summarised by PlanetCatfish: Sturisomatichthys has its central abdominal plates less organised (not arranged in clearly defined longitudinal series), typically shows dark spots on one or more of the dorsal, pectoral, pelvic, or anal fins, and has 15–18 lateral plates in the median series (vs. 20–21 in Sturisoma). Colouration is tan to light brown with fine dark mottling and a series of darker saddles along the dorsal ridge; the belly is pale and naked.

Sexual dimorphism is distinct: mature males develop odontodes (bristle-like spines) along the lateral margins of the head and rostrum, giving the snout a bushy-bristled appearance during the breeding season. Females have smooth, unbristled snouts and are generally somewhat more stout-bodied.

Habitat

Sturisomatichthys panamensis is distributed across Pacific-slope rivers of Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador, and Caribbean-slope drainages of Colombia. The species' range encompasses the Santa María and Tuira drainages on the Pacific slope of Panama, extending eastward to the Atrato, Sinú, and Truandó drainages on the Atlantic slope of Colombia (per the IUCN 2020 assessment by Lyons, González & Armbruster). FishBase records the species from Pacific versant rivers of Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador.

This is a montane and sub-montane river species — Pacific-slope rivers descend steeply from the Andes and Darién highlands, running fast and oxygen-rich over cobble and bedrock. Water conditions differ markedly from the Amazonian blackwaters associated with most ornamental plecos: FishBase records a temperature range of roughly 68–72 °F for field conditions, though PlanetCatfish's husbandry data suggests 79–84 °F for aquarium maintenance (reflecting the species' tolerance range under warmer captive conditions). pH is recorded as 6.5–7.2 — slightly acidic to neutral, reflecting the non-tannin-stained, mildly mineralised river chemistry of Pacific-slope Andean foothill streams. Facultative air-breathing has been documented in the genus (FishBase ref. 126274), likely an adaptation to oxygen-variable seasonal conditions.

Feeding

Sturisomatichthys panamensis is predominantly herbivorous, feeding on epilithic algae, periphyton, and fine detritus scraped from rock and wood surfaces using the finely toothed, brush-like mouth typical of Loricariinae. The elongated rostrum positions the mouth precisely against biofilm-covered surfaces, and the fish feeds in a characteristic nose-down posture, methodically rasping over flat rock and plant leaves.

In the aquarium, the staple diet should be plant-based: algae wafers, spirulina discs, blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, spinach, and fresh lettuce leaves are all accepted and should be offered regularly. Soft-leaved aquatic plants may be nibbled, though robust species like Anubias and Java fern are usually left undamaged. Occasional meaty supplements — frozen bloodworm, white worm, Artemia — are accepted and help maintain condition, particularly during the breeding season when protein demands increase. ScotCat notes that frozen bloodworms and live brine shrimp can be fed sporadically alongside the primarily vegetarian base diet. The fish is an active grazer during daylight hours and will continuously work over tank surfaces; this near-constant browsing makes it one of the more visible large plecos in a well-lit tank.

Mating

Unlike the cave-spawning majority of loricariids, Sturisomatichthys panamensis is an open-surface spawner — a reproductive strategy that sets it apart from most other plecos and makes its breeding behaviour unusually observable. Males develop dramatic facial odontodes before and during the breeding season, and their enlarged bristle-covered snouts serve as both a species- and sex-recognition signal. Females select and approach a male whose snout odontode development signals peak reproductive condition.

Courtship involves the male and female circling each other on flat surfaces — typically the aquarium glass, a large flat rock, or a broad-leaved plant. The male positions alongside or just below the female. Water quality and temperature are strong reproductive triggers: regular large water changes of 30–40% with slightly cooler fresh water, combined with a temperature in the upper range (81–82 °F) and a gradual reduction and then restoration of photoperiod, can stimulate spawning in well-conditioned pairs. The pair should be given a large, unobstructed flat surface; many keepers report the front glass panel as the preferred spawning site.

Breeding

Sturisomatichthys panamensis is one of the most distinctive of all pleco breeders because the spawning and incubation happen entirely in the open. The female deposits a cluster of approximately 50–100 relatively large, adhesive, pale greenish eggs directly onto a flat surface — aquarium glass is the most common site in captivity, though rock faces or plant leaves are used. The male then takes up station over or beside the clutch and guards it continuously, fanning the eggs with his fins and chasing away tankmates that approach.

FishBase records clutch size at approximately 100 eggs; hobbyist accounts corroborate this range. Incubation at 79–82 °F lasts 7–9 days (ScotCat records). Newly hatched fry are relatively large for a loricariid and are immediately capable of feeding; Artemia nauplii, finely minced lettuce, and mashed peas are standard first foods. The male continues to guard the hatched fry for several days. Fry grow quickly on a plant-rich diet and can reach 2–2.5 in in their first two months. Because breeding occurs on exposed surfaces, the entire process is visible to the keeper — the male fanning, the embryos developing, and the fry wriggling free are all observable without disturbance.

In the aquarium

At 10 in SL, Sturisomatichthys panamensis is a substantial fish requiring a spacious aquarium — a minimum of 55 US gal for a single specimen, with 80 US gal or more preferable for a breeding pair or small group. The tank should provide strong, well-oxygenated flow: these are river fish from fast, steep drainages, and stagnant or oxygen-poor conditions cause rapid deterioration. An external canister filter with a spray bar or powerhead providing clear, directional flow is recommended.

Decoration should include smooth, flat rocks, cobbles, and broad-leaved plants such as Amazon swords, Echinodorus, or large Anubias. Unlike most cave-spawning plecos, S. panamensis needs open, clean flat surfaces more than it needs caves; however, providing some hide-away rock piles allows subordinate individuals to retreat. A large, open front panel is useful if breeding is a goal. Substrate can be sand or fine gravel.

Water parameters: temperature 75–82 °F (slightly cooler water — 72–75 °F — is consistent with field measurements from Pacific-slope streams, but captive animals thrive at somewhat higher temperatures; avoid sustained temperatures above 84 °F), pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness acceptable. Regular water changes — 30–40% weekly — are essential. Tankmates should be peaceful and similarly sized; this species is gentle and will be bullied by territorial cichlids or boisterous catfishes. Compatible species include medium-sized, non-aggressive cichlids, large tetras, and robust Corydoras. Avoid housing with other large loricariids that compete for the flat grazing surfaces.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Sturisomatichthys panamensis as Least Concern in 2020 (assessment by Lyons, González & Armbruster, published 2020). The assessment records an Extent of Occurrence of approximately 99,408 mi², spanning Pacific-slope drainages from Panama into Colombia and Ecuador, plus Caribbean-slope Colombian rivers. The species is described as uncommon throughout much of its range based on available ichthyological survey data.

Identified threats include land-use change and deforestation linked to agricultural expansion, widespread artisanal and commercial gold mining in headwater areas, and pollution from industrial and domestic wastewater in lowland reaches. These pressures are producing localised negative impacts but no major range-wide decline is currently documented. The IUCN assessment emphasises that while threats are real, they have not yet translated into a measurable population trend warranting a threatened category.

The ornamental trade imports S. panamensis occasionally, primarily from Colombia and Panama; captive-bred specimens appear in specialist European and North American markets. Captive breeding is achievable but not yet as widespread as for the commonly kept Sturisomatichthys species from cis-Andean waters, reflecting the species' relative scarcity in trade.
