Taxonomy & naming
Ethelwynn Trewavas named this fish in 1935, in a synoptic key to the cichlids of Lake Nyasa — now Lake Malawi — as Melanochromis labrosus. The placement was awkward from the start, because Melanochromis is defined by a horizontal-striped colour pattern and labrosus has no stripes. Her account was spare: a single couplet noting lips produced into pointed lobes, a few head measurements, and no illustration. The one holotype, BMNH 1935.6.14:321 at 1.5 in SL, had been collected by Cuthbert Christy in 1925 at Deep Bay — the locality now called Chilumba, on the north-western Malawian shore (10°27'S, 34°16'E).
For the next 75 years the fish drifted between genera: Haplochromis labrosus in the late-1970s aquarium literature (Loiselle 1978; Merritt 1978), then Cyrtocara labrosa in Mayland (1982). The reshuffling reflected real uncertainty rather than carelessness, because the species lacks almost every character used to define the neighbouring genera. Michael K. Oliver and Matthew E. Arnegard settled the question in 2010 with a full redescription (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 21(3): 209–232), examining every specimen they could obtain and surveying vertebral counts across the thirteen mbuna genera. Melanochromis it was not: it lacks that genus's diagnostic sexually dimorphic horizontal stripes and falls outside its vertebral range (28–29 total vertebrae here, versus 30–33 in Melanochromis). Nor did it fit anything else. Its greatly enlarged, papillose, medially lobate lips, deeply compressed head, long premaxillary pedicel and fused endopterygoid-metapterygoid are each unique within the mbuna, so Oliver and Arnegard erected the new monotypic genus Abactochromis, with labrosus its only species.
The valid name is now Abactochromis labrosus (Trewavas, 1935), the genus dating to Oliver and Arnegard, 2010. Konings and Stauffer (2012) and Konings (2016) endorsed the placement, and a 2022 phylogenomic study (Masonick et al.) confirmed that Abactochromis sits within the mbuna clade, most closely allied to Labidochromis and Iodotropheus. The fish has no settled common name. It sometimes surfaces in the trade as 'Melanochromis Labrosus' — the label the IUCN assessment still uses — but that name is now only a synonym, and most keepers simply call it by the scientific name.
Morphology
The head is remarkably large — at least 40% of standard length in fish over 2 in SL — and so strongly compressed side-to-side that, seen from above, the front of the fish narrows to a wedge, almost a beak. The lips give it away: upper and lower are both hypertrophied and pulled out into fleshy median lobes, lending a permanently pouting look unlike any other mbuna. Histology by Oliver and Arnegard (2010) showed those swollen lips to be packed with taste buds, which points to a sensory rather than a purely mechanical job.
Reported size varies with how it is measured. FishBase gives a maximum of 4.5 in SL, matching the largest specimen (4.5 in SL) in the Oliver and Arnegard material, while malawi.si lists adult total length up to 6.5 in TL, the biggest fish being males. Body depth is at least 33% of standard length and the caudal peduncle is short. The dorsal fin carries XV–XVII spines and 7–9 soft rays, the anal III,7–8. Total vertebral count is distinctively low for an mbuna at 28–29 — the lowest Oliver and Arnegard recorded in any mbuna genus but for a single Labidochromis specimen.
Out of breeding condition, both sexes are drab: dusky brown, grey, or nearly black, with narrow vertical bars (usually 6–7) below the dorsal-fin base that the dark ground colour often swallows. There are no horizontal stripes, and the lips are frequently the palest part of the animal. The dorsal-fin lappets run yellow to dull orange, the soft dorsal's edge can be a brighter orange, and a dark submarginal band shows when the fin is backlit. Breeding males turn a bluish- to purplish-grey over head and body, their vertical bars sharpen into strong contrast, and the unpaired fins go blackish-brown with pale blue-white margins. They also carry two to four small ocellate spots, yolk-yellow to deep orange, in the rear of the anal fin — the standard mbuna arrangement. One orange individual photographed by Ad Konings at Chitande Island may be a polychromatic O morph of the sort known in other mbuna.
Sexual dimorphism is otherwise slight. Males grow larger and hold territory more stubbornly; females are smaller, and outside spawning condition the colour difference between the sexes is minimal.
Habitat
Abactochromis labrosus is found only in Lake Malawi, whose waters are shared by Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. One gap stands out: despite half a century of collecting there, it has never been recorded from the two southern arms — the Cape Maclear region and the shores south of Monkey Bay (Ribbink et al. 1983; Oliver and Arnegard 2010). Everywhere else it turns up, but always at low density — along the north-western shore around Chilumba, down the Mozambique coast, across at Likoma and Chisumulu islands, around Nkhata Bay, and as far south as Mbenji Island on the central-west side.
The habitat is intermediate rocky shore: small to medium rocks, boulder piles and reefs riddled with narrow crevices and caves (malawi.si; Oliver and Arnegard 2010). Most fish are seen shallower than 26 ft (Ribbink et al. 1983), and malawi.si reports that the species spends most of its time tucked inside caves and very narrow cracks. The confirmed depth range runs from the surface to about 98 ft, the deepest record a specimen taken by rotenone at 95–112 ft on Tchulutcha Reef, Mozambique (Oliver and Arnegard 2010). Rotenone sampling at Nkhata Bay pulled fish from 30–66 ft where none had been spotted on repeated dives — a good illustration of how badly visual surveys undercount this cryptic species.
The chemistry is standard hard, alkaline rift-lake water. FishBase, citing Oliver and Arnegard (2010), records pH 7.0–8.5 and hardness 10–15 dH; the lake as a whole is stratified but well buffered near pH 7.7–8.6 in the surface mixed layer, with surface temperatures averaging 73–79 °F over the seasonal cycle. No in-situ measurements have been published for Abactochromis labrosus collection sites specifically, so these figures are habitat-typical for Lake Malawi's rocky shores and should be read that way.
Feeding
No one has formally studied how Abactochromis labrosus feeds — there is no published gut-content analysis and no in-the-wild feeding observation. What we do have is anatomy, habitat and a few field notes, and together they sketch a distinctive strategy. Konings (2001, in Oliver and Arnegard 2010) argued that the flattened body lets the fish slip into extremely tight gaps between rocks, where the swollen lips seal off a crack and prey are drawn out by suction; Ribbink et al. (1983) reported the same feeding action in the field. Both malawi.si and the IUCN assessment describe it taking benthic invertebrates and loose aufwuchs sucked from crevices and grooves — a predatory invertivore exploiting the same narrow spaces other mbuna cannot reach.
Exactly what it eats is only partly pinned down. The IUCN habitat-ecology note lists benthic invertebrates and small aufwuchs organisms from crevices. An older idea — Konings's suggestion that the fish also hunts small mbuna fry — is repeated in the Oliver and Arnegard paper but flagged there as hypothetical rather than confirmed by diet study. FishBase places it at trophic level 3.4, in keeping with a predatory or omnivorous benthic feeder rather than a grazer.
The lip histology turned up a detail an earlier report had missed. Loiselle (in Merritt 1978) had recorded 'no sensory tissue' in the lips; Oliver and Arnegard's (2010) sections found them densely furnished with taste buds, at a density on par with Otopharynx pachycheilus — the only other Malawi haplochromine whose lip tissue had been examined. Taste-bud-rich lips work rather like catfish barbels, letting the fish register prey by chemical cue in a lightless crack. So Abactochromis labrosus does not just probe cracks by feel; it tastes its way to the invertebrates hiding in them.
Mating
Abactochromis labrosus is a maternal mouthbrooder whose social life departs sharply from the mbuna template. Most mbuna males defend a fixed patch of rock for weeks or months; this one seems to hold no feeding or breeding territory that a diver can find. Observers meet single fish easing slowly along the rock from crack to crack — it has been called 'a solitary fish' since Ribbink et al. (1983), and Konings (in Oliver and Arnegard 2010) describes the males as wandering the rocks rather than guarding a spot.
Spawning has never been watched in the wild. In aquaria, courting males have been seen both inside and outside cave structures (malawi.si). A male in breeding dress takes on the intensified bluish-grey body and sharp vertical bars covered under Morphology, plus the bright ocellate spots in the anal fin that guide the female to the sperm as she picks up the eggs — the lure-and-scoop spawning of haplochromine cichlids.
Whatever territoriality occurs looks brief and place-independent. There are none of the persistent algae-garden holdings kept by strongly territorial mbuna such as the aggressive Pseudotropheus complex or Labeotropheus; a fish that spends its day threading narrow crevices may simply be a poor fit for open-rock territory. That very difference helped inspire the genus name Abactochromis — 'banished' or 'wandering'.
Breeding
Breeding is known only from the aquarium; wild spawning has never been documented (Oliver and Arnegard 2010). In captivity, courting males colour up and approach females in open water and near cave mouths, but defend no lasting spawning site beyond the act itself. As in other haplochromines, the female takes the eggs and larvae into her buccal cavity and broods them there.
Clutch size is genuinely unrecorded — neither wild rotenone-collected fish nor controlled aquarium spawns have yielded a figure. The IUCN assessment assumes a generation length of about a year from typical mbuna fecundity, and FishBase rates resilience as 'high', with a minimum population-doubling time under 15 months, both consistent with modest clutches and fairly quick turnover.
The species is seldom bred in the hobby. malawi.si suggests one male with several females in a tank of 105 US gal or more, packed with rockwork full of narrow crevices. Male-on-male aggression is high, so keeping more than one male is discouraged, yet — unusually — the fish is generally easygoing toward other species, the reverse of the many mbuna that are harsher on outsiders than on their own kind. Juveniles are now and then found in small groups in the wild, itself a surprise for a fish that is otherwise so solitary.
In the aquarium
Abactochromis labrosus is among the rarest Lake Malawi cichlids in the hobby. Stuart Grant's export records (in Oliver and Arnegard 2010) put annual captures at five to ten fish out of roughly 75,000 cichlids exported from Malawi each year, so simply finding one is a project — and when it turns up it is usually unlabelled or mislabelled, which makes knowing what you have half the battle.
Tank: a species setup of 80–105 US gal is a sensible floor; malawi.si's 105 US gal figure assumes one male and a small harem of two or three females, the safest arrangement. Build extensive, tightly fitted rockwork that recreates the narrow crevices and cave mouths of the rocky shallows, set over a sand base. The fish really uses that structure, spending much of its time half-hidden in the stacks, so a bare or thinly decorated tank yields a stressed, inactive animal.
Water: standard Lake Malawi conditions — pH 7.7–8.5, hardness 10–20 °dH, 75–81 °F — kept toward the harder, more alkaline end of the published 7.0–8.5 pH and 73–79 °F range for the habitat. Soft or acidic water is wrong for it and causes long-term harm. Strong filtration and low nitrate matter more here than for most cichlids: a fish that wedges into cracks and 'tastes' surfaces for food will feed and behave poorly in compromised water.
Diet: an invertivore, not a vegetarian, so the spirulina-heavy foods sold for mbuna grazers are a poor match. Offer good sinking pellets alongside frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, cyclops and similar small invertebrate fare, in regular small feedings; it learns to take food up top but naturally forages along the substrate and rock faces.
Tankmates: the counterintuitive part. Abactochromis labrosus is comparatively tolerant of other species — it does not patrol and pick fights the way many mbuna do — but male-on-male aggression is serious, and two males in one tank reliably ends with the subordinate dead. Against other mbuna of similar or larger size it holds its own; it is no weakling, just not a constant aggressor. Steer clear of the real bruisers (a big male Pseudotropheus crabro, a dominant Melanochromis auratus), which could pin down a small group, and of any predatory haplochromine large enough to swallow a 3.5 in fish. A roomy mixed-mbuna community with broken sightlines works well enough.
Breeding: rare but not unheard of. It wants a stable, undisturbed harem, caves where holding females can retreat, and consistently clean water — swinging nitrates will prompt a female to give up a brood early. Move a holding female to a small brooding tank at around ten days, or provide enough cover that tankmates cannot keep harassing her. Brood sizes are undocumented; genus-typical numbers for a fish this size suggest roughly 20–40 eggs, but that is not confirmed.
Common mistakes: buying a single fish and dropping it into a sparse tank, then wondering why it hides and won't eat in the open. Build the rockwork first, add the fish second, and give it time to settle before judging its condition.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List rates Abactochromis labrosus Least Concern (assessed 22 June 2018; published 2018, errata 2019; assessors Ad Konings and J. Kazembe; reviewer J. Snoeks). The logic: it is endemic to Lake Malawi, rare but spread around most of the shoreline, with no known major threats and no documented decline.
The one flagged pressure is collection for the aquarium trade, which the assessment itself plays down given how seldom the fish is taken. Stuart Grant (in Oliver and Arnegard 2010) estimated only five to ten individuals a year among some 75,000 cichlids collected for export, making Abactochromis labrosus one of Malawi's rarest exports. Its cryptic, crevice-bound life keeps commercial collectors from finding it often — both a shield against collection pressure and a reminder that rarity figures built on sightings probably understate its true numbers.
The lake around it is another matter. Lake Malawi was the Living Lakes Network's 'Threatened Lake of the Year' for 2022, beset by overfishing, catchment deforestation and erosion that feed sedimentation and turbidity, drought and falling water levels linked to climate change, and weak enforcement driven by poverty. Sedimentation bears directly on rocky-shore fish, and a species that depends on clean, open crevices has a real stake in whether silt fills them. None of this has yet been shown to be reducing Abactochromis labrosus specifically, and its 0–98 ft range sits in the surface mixed layer — the zone most exposed to warming but also the best oxygenated. Least Concern is the right call on current evidence, but it applies to a fish living in a lake under clear strain, and the assessment's call for site management and population-trend monitoring is well placed.
