Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Alticorpus profundicola lives up to its name: a deep-dweller endemic to Lake Malawi, found near the lower edge of where any fish can survive in the lake. Its type material came off Nkhotakota at about 159 metres, in cold, dark water far below the reefs that aquarists know. The smallest fish in its genus, it carries the deep-water signature of enlarged head pores — a mechanosensory system for hunting by feel where there is no light. It is also the one deep Alticorpus the IUCN still lists as Data Deficient: known, but barely.

Taxonomy & naming

Jay Stauffer and Kenneth McKaye described Alticorpus profundicola in 1988, in the Copeia paper — 'Description of a genus and three deep water species of fishes (Teleostei: Cichlidae) from Lake Malawi, Africa' — that also erected the genus Alticorpus and named its type species, Alticorpus mentale. Because profundicola was placed in Alticorpus from the outset, its authorship carries no parentheses: Alticorpus profundicola Stauffer & McKaye, 1988, valid in the family Cichlidae, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, per Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The holotype (USNM 288855) was taken off Nkota Kota (Nkhotakota), on the central-western shore, at a remarkable depth of about 522 ft.

The genus name fuses the Latin altus (deep, high) with corpus (body), for the comparatively deep-bodied build of the group. The epithet profundicola combines the Latin profundus (deep) with the suffix -cola (dweller, inhabitant) — literally 'deep-dweller' — pointing straight at the species' occurrence in the deepest water of the genus. Among its congeners, a small cluster of roughly six valid Malawi endemics that includes Alticorpus mentale, Alticorpus macrocleithrum, Alticorpus peterdaviesi and Alticorpus geoffreyi, this is the most extreme in depth and the smallest in body — a fish that pushes the genus's deep-water habit close to its physiological limit.

Morphology

Alticorpus profundicola is the smallest member of its genus, reaching about 5 in standard length (FishBase). The body is the moderately deep, laterally compressed shape typical of Alticorpus, with median-fin counts unremarkable for a Malawi haplochromine. Its defining features sit in the sensory head, not in coloration: the cranial sensory pores and lateral-line canals are enlarged, opening as conspicuous cavities across the snout, cheek and lower jaw. That deep-water signature is why Alticorpus keeps turning up in studies of cichlid sensory evolution.

Unlike its relative Alticorpus macrocleithrum, this species does not carry a dramatic bony keel on the chest — its specialisation is the enlarged sensory system rather than a hypertrophied shoulder girdle. And like the rest of the deep-water flock, it shows no well-documented, vivid sexual dimorphism, which is unsurprising for a fish living and breeding near the lake's lower limit of habitability, where bright breeding dress would serve no purpose. Most of what science holds of the species is preserved trawl material in the muted tones of a deep-water animal, not living, coloured fish.

Habitat

This is the deepest-living member of an already deep-water genus, endemic to Lake Malawi and recorded from the central and southern lake (roughly 12°S–13°S). FishBase gives a depth range of about 180–410 ft, but the type material came from far deeper — off Nkhotakota at around 522 ft — which puts this fish near the lower limit of where cichlids occur in the lake, close to the oxygen-limited deep layer below which fish cannot survive. The sunlit reef community that aquarists and divers know occupies roughly the top 98 ft; Alticorpus profundicola lives in the cold, dark water tens to well over a hundred metres beneath it.

Its floor is soft sediment — the fine mud and diatomaceous ooze that gathers in the deep basins — rather than rock or weed. This is a benthopelagic, deep-bottom niche defined by extreme depth, near-total darkness, low temperature and proximity to the lake's oxycline. The water is the hard, alkaline water of Lake Malawi generally (broadly pH 7.7–8.6), but for a fish at 492 ft the surface chemistry aquarists fuss over is almost beside the point: depth, cold, gloom and oxygen are what define its world.

Feeding

Alticorpus profundicola is a benthic feeder of the deep soft floor. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 2.8, indicating a diet weighted toward small items taken from the sediment — diatoms, detritus and small invertebrates — with an omnivorous lean rather than active piscivory. Its small size, deep-bottom habitat and the sensory specialisations of the genus all read as the toolkit of a sediment-associated micro-feeder working the soft floor for prey.

The enlarged head pores are the functional centrepiece of this lifestyle. In the near-total darkness of water around 492 ft, vision is essentially useless, and an expanded mechanosensory lateral-line system lets the fish detect the faint water movements of prey on or in the bottom by feel. Gut-content work specific to this species is effectively absent — like the rest of the deep Malawi fauna it is known almost entirely from trawl surveys rather than feeding studies — but a trophic level near 2.8 and the genus's sensory adaptations point firmly to a low-on-the-food-web feeder hunting the deep floor more by touch than by sight.

Mating

Courtship in Alticorpus profundicola has never been observed directly, for the obvious reason that the fish lives at depths no diver reaches and is known only from trawl catches and preserved specimens. What can be said comes from the strong family resemblance to the rest of the Lake Malawi haplochromine flock, almost all of which are polygynous maternal mouthbrooders whose sexes associate only briefly to spawn. The absence of obvious breeding coloration in this species and its congeners fits a fish that pairs in water far too dark for the visual displays that drive courtship among shallow sand- and rock-dwellers.

Rather than the bower-building and colour-flashing of a shallow hap, the realistic picture is of a deep-water fish spawning on or near the soft floor at extreme depth — males most likely competing for and defending temporary spawning sites in the dark, and females choosing among them. The specifics of timing, site and display remain entirely undescribed, and are inferred here from the genus and the broader flock rather than recorded for the species.

Breeding

Alticorpus profundicola is treated as a maternal mouthbrooder, consistent with its genus and with essentially the entire Malawi haplochromine radiation. After spawning, the female is presumed to take the eggs into her mouth and carry the developing eggs and larvae until the young are free-swimming, releasing a small brood of relatively large, well-provisioned fry — the standard Malawi strategy, carried out at the very bottom of the lake's habitable range rather than on a sunlit reef.

No clutch counts, egg sizes or fry-development data specific to this species have been published; the deep-water Alticorpus are known reproductively, where at all, from trawl-based fishery biology rather than breeding observation. Related deep congeners such as Alticorpus macrocleithrum have been shown by South West Arm trawl work to spawn seasonally and to carry moderate clutches on the order of a hundred to a few hundred eggs. As the smallest of the genus, Alticorpus profundicola most plausibly carries a similarly moderate or slightly smaller clutch — but for this species specifically, the early life history is entirely undocumented.

In the aquarium

For practical purposes this is emphatically not an aquarium fish. Alticorpus profundicola is the deepest-living member of a deep-water genus, taken incidentally by demersal trawls rather than by ornamental collectors, and it does not feature in the hobby trade in any meaningful way. FishBase's broad 'aquarium: commercial' tag — applied widely across Malawi cichlids — badly overstates how available or keepable a fish like this really is.

The barriers are physical. An animal adapted to life around 492 ft faces severe trouble on the way up: the enormous pressure change of a trawl haul from that depth is hard on a cichlid, and even one that survived it would need cold, lightless, soft-floored conditions that a bright, warm Malawi display tank cannot remotely provide.

The useful way to place it is as the deep-end extreme of the radiation whose shallower members hobbyists do keep. If you want to understand the full reach of the Lake Malawi cichlid flock, this is the chapter at the very bottom of the depth chart — the lineage that colonised the cold, dark, oxygen-poor deep and rebuilt its sensory system to live there. It belongs on a serious keeper's mental map of the lake as the limit case, even though it will never belong in their aquarium.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Alticorpus profundicola as Data Deficient — the one member of its genus not classed Least Concern. That rating is candid: there simply is not enough information on the species' distribution, abundance or trend to judge its extinction risk, which is unsurprising for a fish known mainly from a handful of trawl records at extreme depth. It sets this species apart from its more widely recorded congeners, assessed Least Concern as widespread deep endemics.

The pressure most relevant to a deep-bottom fish is the demersal (bottom) trawl fishery that works the lake for food fish. Offshore Alticorpus sit squarely in the path of the trawls, and demersal trawling bears down hardest on the slow-to-survey, slow-recovering deep communities that are least understood. A species this poorly known and this tightly tied to extreme-depth habitat is one for which the honest answer is that we cannot yet say it is safe. That uncertainty sits within the broader strain on the whole Lake Malawi system — fishing pressure, catchment sedimentation, and a warming, more strongly stratified water column that can shrink the habitable deep layer on which a fish living near the oxycline most depends. The priority is plainly more survey data; until then, Data Deficient is the truthful label.
