Taxonomy & naming
Jay Stauffer and Kenneth McKaye described Alticorpus mentale in 1988, in a Copeia paper titled 'Description of a genus and three deep water species of fishes (Teleostei: Cichlidae) from Lake Malawi, Africa.' The same paper erected the new genus Alticorpus for a group of deep-living haplochromines and named mentale as its type species. Because the fish was placed in Alticorpus from the outset, the authorship carries no parentheses: Alticorpus mentale Stauffer & McKaye, 1988, valid in the family Cichlidae, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, as listed in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The holotype (USNM 288851) was trawled off Monkey Bay, in the south of the lake, from a depth of about 246 ft.
The genus name joins the Latin altus (deep, high) with corpus (body), for the comparatively deep-bodied build the group shares; the epithet mentale comes from the Latin mentum, 'chin,' and marks the diagnostic feature — a projecting bony chin at the front of the lower jaw. As type species, Alticorpus mentale anchors a small cluster of roughly six valid Malawi endemics, among them Alticorpus macrocleithrum, Alticorpus peterdaviesi, Alticorpus profundicola and Alticorpus geoffreyi. All are tied to deep, offshore, soft-bottomed water rather than the rocky shallows of the mbuna or the weedy haunts of the better-known 'haps.' Its closest relative is Alticorpus geoffreyi, from which Alticorpus mentale differs in its larger relative jaw and a slightly different arrangement and size of head pores.
Morphology
Alticorpus mentale is the largest member of its genus, reaching about 8 in standard length (FishBase) — a respectable size for a deep-water hap. The body is fusiform and laterally compressed, moderately deep in the genus style, with median-fin counts unremarkable for a Malawi haplochromine. Its hallmark sits at the front of the head: the prominent mental process, a projecting chin carried on a relatively long lower jaw, which gives the fish its name.
The second defining feature belongs to the whole genus. Greatly enlarged cranial sensory pores and lateral-line canals open as conspicuous cavities across the snout, cheek and lower jaw — the sensory signature that makes Alticorpus a recurring subject in studies of cichlid sensory evolution. The species also has a notably low gill-raker count. Unlike its relative Alticorpus macrocleithrum, Alticorpus mentale carries no dramatic bony keel on the chest; its specialisation is the chin and the sensory head, not a hypertrophied shoulder girdle. As with the rest of the deep-water flock, no vivid sexual dimorphism has been documented — the bright breeding dress of shallow-water cichlids would be wasted on a fish that spawns in near-darkness.
Habitat
This is a deep-water endemic of Lake Malawi, recorded mainly from the southern part of the lake (roughly 12°S–15°S). FishBase gives a depth range of about 59–492 ft and describes the species as 'more or less evenly distributed below 197 ft,' with the type material taken off Monkey Bay at around 246 ft. The shallow, sunlit reef zone that draws aquarists and divers is only the top 98 ft or so; Alticorpus mentale lives mostly beneath it, in cool, dim water over the offshore floor.
The substrate is soft. The species clearly prefers sandy and muddy bottoms over rock or weed, working a benthic, sediment-associated niche where it hunts the floor for prey. The water is the hard, alkaline water of Lake Malawi generally (broadly pH 7.7–8.6), but at these depths the environmental axes that matter are depth, low light, lower temperature and the approach to the lake's oxygen-limited deep layer — not the surface biotope chemistry that dominates aquarium talk about Malawi cichlids.
Feeding
Alticorpus mentale is a benthic feeder of the soft offshore bottom. FishBase places it at a low trophic level of about 2.7, pointing to a diet weighted toward small items taken from the sediment — diatoms, detritus and small invertebrates worked out of the sand and mud — rather than toward active fish-eating. The long lower jaw with its projecting chin, the low gill-raker count and the enlarged head pores together read as a toolkit for processing the soft floor and finding prey within it.
Those cavernous head pores are the functional centre. In dim or dark deep water, an expanded mechanosensory lateral-line system lets the fish sense the faint water movements of invertebrates hidden in or on the bottom, where vision counts for little. Detailed, species-specific gut studies are sparse — like most of the deep Malawi fauna, Alticorpus mentale is known largely from trawl surveys — but its low trophic level and sensory specialisations point firmly to a sediment-sifter that feeds on micro-invertebrates and detritus and hunts more by feel than by sight.
Mating
Courtship in Alticorpus mentale has never been observed directly, for the familiar reason that the fish lives below diving depth and is known chiefly from trawl catches and preserved specimens. What can be said comes from its strong family resemblance to the rest of the Lake Malawi haplochromine flock, almost all of which are polygynous maternal mouthbrooders whose sexes come together only briefly to spawn. The absence of obvious breeding colour in Alticorpus mentale and its congeners fits a fish that pairs in water too dark for the visual displays that drive courtship among shallow sand- and rock-dwellers.
Rather than the bower-building and colour-flashing of a shallow hap, the realistic picture is of a deep-water fish spawning on or near the soft offshore floor — males most likely competing for and defending temporary spawning sites in the gloom while females choose among them. The specifics of timing, site and display remain undescribed, inferred here from the genus and the broader flock rather than recorded for the species.
Breeding
Alticorpus mentale is treated as a maternal mouthbrooder, consistent with its genus and with essentially the whole Malawi haplochromine radiation. After spawning, the female is presumed to take the eggs into her mouth and carry the developing eggs and larvae until the young are free-swimming, then release a small brood of relatively large, well-provisioned fry — the standard Malawi strategy, only carried out in deep, cold, lightless water rather than on a sunlit reef.
No clutch counts, egg sizes or fry-development data specific to Alticorpus mentale have been published; the deep-water Alticorpus are known reproductively, where at all, from trawl-based fishery biology rather than from breeding observation. Related deep congeners such as Alticorpus macrocleithrum have been shown by South West Arm trawl work to spawn seasonally and to carry moderate clutches on the order of a hundred to a few hundred eggs, and Alticorpus mentale most plausibly follows a broadly similar pattern — but for this species the early life history remains to be documented.
In the aquarium
For practical purposes, this is not an aquarium fish. Alticorpus mentale is a deep-water specialist taken incidentally by demersal trawls, not by ornamental collectors working the shallow reefs, and it plays no meaningful part in the hobby trade. FishBase's broad 'aquarium: commercial' tag, applied across so many Malawi cichlids, overstates how available or keepable a fish like this really is. An animal adapted to life below 197 ft is in real trouble on the way up: the pressure change of a trawl haul is hard on a deep-bodied cichlid, and even a healthy specimen would need the cool, dark, soft-floored conditions that a bright, warm Malawi display tank cannot provide.
The useful way to place Alticorpus mentale is as the type species of the deep-water counterpart to the haps and peacocks hobbyists actually keep. To understand the full Lake Malawi radiation is to follow it off the bottom of the depth chart, where Alticorpus is the lineage that colonised the cold, dim, soft-floored deep and rebuilt its sensory system to live there. Alticorpus mentale belongs on a serious keeper's mental map of the lake, even though it will almost certainly never belong in their aquarium.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Alticorpus mentale as Least Concern. The reasoning follows the pattern applied to the widespread deep Malawi endemics: the species is confined to a single lake but broadly distributed through its deep southern waters, so localised pressures are unlikely to threaten the whole population — even though population data are essentially absent and the deep lake is very hard to survey. The 2019 IUCN regional analysis of the Lake Malawi/Nyasa/Niassa catchment likewise lists Alticorpus mentale as Least Concern and endemic.
The pressure most relevant to a deep-bottom fish is the demersal (bottom) trawl fishery that works the south of the lake for food fish. Unlike the shallow reef cichlids caught incidentally by hook-and-line, offshore Alticorpus sit squarely in the path of the trawls, and demersal trawling bears down hardest on the slow-to-survey, slow-recovering deep communities that are least understood. That sits within the broader strain on the whole Lake Malawi system — fishing pressure, catchment sedimentation, and a warming, more strongly stratified water column that can shrink the habitable deep layer. The honest reading is that Alticorpus mentale is secure on paper today but genuinely under-monitored, with the deep trawl fishery and the long-term health of the lake's deep water the things to watch.
