Apistogramma elizabethae is a small blackwater dwarf cichlid from the upper Rio Negro in northwestern Brazilian Amazonia, where it lives in tea-dark, acidic forest creeks over drifted leaf litter. Slender and agassizii-like, breeding males flush electric blue, orange, and red and trail a lyre- to lance-shaped tail. Its signature tell is a defensive one: a stressed fish drops its colour and reveals two stacked oval blotches on each flank, a pattern shared by no other dwarf cichlid in its range. Long one of the most expensive Apistogramma in the hobby, it is also among the most demanding — it needs genuinely soft, acidic water and a keeper who has that ready before the fish arrives.

Taxonomy & naming

The Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander described Apistogramma elizabethae in 1980, in his foundational monograph revising the Brazilian and Peruvian species of the genus (Bonner Zoologische Monographien No. 14: 1-152). The type locality is an affluent of the Rio Uaupés at Trovão, roughly 12 mi from the river's mouth, in Amazonas State, Brazil. The synonymy has never changed and the validity of the species is not disputed — the IUCN assessment records the taxon as uncontested.

The genus name pairs the Greek apisto ('uncertain, unreliable') with gramma ('line'), a nod to the variably developed, often incomplete lateral line of these cichlids; the species epithet honours a person, as the etymology call-out sets out below.

Apistogramma is one of the most species-rich cichlid genera in South America — roughly 90 valid species plus many undescribed forms — and belongs to the subfamily Geophaginae. Mike Wise's working classification, the standard hobby framework hosted on apistogramma.com and Tom Christoffersen's site, places the fish in the Apistogramma trifasciata-lineage, Apistogramma agassizii-sublineage. It long stood as an outlier there, widely regarded as the most primitive member of the agassizii radiation, but the discovery of Apistogramma sp. 'Maravilha' — a form intermediate between Apistogramma elizabethae and Apistogramma gibbiceps — led Wise's 2020 revision to fold it into the Apistogramma gibbiceps-group. The whole sublineage shares the diagnostic 'Apistogramma agassizii lip spot' (a metallic-blue patch near the corner of the mouth), infraorbital pores reduced to three, and a frontal rather than lateral threat display. In the hobby the fish carries the DATZ code A208 and the trade name Elizabeth's dwarf cichlid.

Morphology

This is a true dwarf cichlid. Males reach about 1.5 in in standard length and females around 1 in; Kullander's 2003 checklist gives a total length near 1.5 in, and Seriously Fish cites a maximum of roughly 1.5–2 in. The body is slender and elongate, much like Apistogramma agassizii, carrying a dark lateral band at least one and a half scales deep, often with faint, slightly diagonal abdominal bars running across the lower flanks below it.

Colour is highly variable and population-dependent. Males from the Rio Uaupés tend toward a blue-gray base with iridescent blue along the dorsal fin and a yellow-to-orange throat and belly that intensifies sharply in courtship; fish from the Rio Içana drainage often show more metallic blue and red striping across the face and gill covers. A reddish strain collected near the settlement of Tucano (frequently mis-spelled 'Tucana') circulates as 'super red' or 'red belly', and yellow and green forms exist too — keepers stress that these should never be mixed. Females are an understated olive that turns brilliant yellow with bold black markings when guarding eggs or fry.

Sexual dimorphism is strong. Beyond the female's smaller size and breeding livery, the defining male feature is the tail: it changes shape with age, from rounded in juveniles to lyrate in subadults to a long lanceolate point in mature males, with the dorsal-fin membrane often raised into a sail. Females never develop these, keeping a rounded or barely truncate tail. The single most reliable field mark, noted by both the importer Aquarium Glaser and by Kullander's description, appears under stress: an alarmed fish loses much of its colour and reveals two horizontally arranged oval spots on each flank — a double blotch seen in no other Rio Negro Apistogramma, which carry one spot or an entirely different pattern.

Habitat

Apistogramma elizabethae is endemic to Brazil, restricted to the upper Rio Negro system in Amazonas State. It was described from the Rio Uaupés basin and is also recorded from the adjacent Rio Içana (R. Britzke, pers. obs. 2013, per the IUCN assessment), with informal occurrences in the middle-to-upper Negro upstream of Santa Isabel do Rio Negro and reports from the Rio Tiquié and around São Gabriel da Cachoeira. The total range is modest for the genus, yet knowledgeable keepers note that 99 mi (100 miles) or more can separate the extremes — far enough for populations to differ, and far enough that hobbyists treat separate imports as potentially distinct. Records from Colombia or Venezuela are not established in the primary literature or the IUCN range, so it is best treated as a Brazilian endemic.

The habitat is classic Amazonian blackwater: slow tributaries, backwaters, and shaded forest creeks (igarapés) where fallen leaves gather on the bottom. This is among the softest, most acidic, most nutrient-poor freshwater on Earth, stained tea-brown by tannins and humic acids leached from decaying vegetation and the surrounding white-sand catchments. In situ the water runs very soft (dH near 0-3), strongly acidic, and warm; FishBase records a pH of roughly 5.0-6.0 and temperatures of about 72–84 °F (72-84 °F), and aquarists report wild fish thriving below pH 5. The creeks it shares include congeners such as Apistogramma brevis, Apistogramma meinkeni, and Apistogramma uaupesi.

Feeding

Like other Apistogramma, Apistogramma elizabethae is a micro-predator, taking mostly small benthic invertebrates picked from the substrate and leaf litter; FishBase places it at a trophic level around 3.3. Its foraging mechanics are the genus's hallmark and help explain its habitat preferences: the fish takes a mouthful of fine sand, sifts it across specialised rakers on the gill arches to strain out edible particles, then expels the cleaned grains through the gill openings.

That behaviour matters in the tank as much as in the wild. The importer Aquarium Glaser argues that access to fine sand is in some respects more important than exact water chemistry, since a fish denied it loses a natural feeding-and-cleaning routine. In the blackwater food web these are low-density consumers in an inherently low-productivity system, gleaning the modest invertebrate fauna that leaf-litter decomposition supports rather than the rich algal and planktonic production of clearer, more fertile waters. That same low productivity is why even modest collection pressure can register locally — there is simply not a large standing population to draw on.

Mating

Apistogramma elizabethae has a female-dominated, cave-spawning social system typical of the agassizii assemblage: the female holds and tends a small breeding territory around a cavity, while the male defends a larger territory that may overlap one or more females. It is less belligerent than many dwarf cichlids. Keepers report success both with a single pair and with a small group of adults and juveniles together, though pairs tend to break off and breed most readily on their own.

Courtship runs through the male's heightened display — the raised sail-like dorsal, the lengthened lyre-to-lance tail, and the intensified blue-and-orange flush — and through the frontal threat posture the sublineage shares, rather than the broadside display of more basal Apistogramma. A receptive female, turning her bold black-and-yellow breeding dress, leads the male to a chosen cavity. The pairing is not always harmonious in confinement: in cramped quarters a female preparing to spawn, or already guarding, can turn hyper-aggressive toward the male, and removing him may be necessary to keep the peace.

Breeding

Apistogramma elizabethae is a cave-spawning substrate brooder, with the female doing the close brood care. Eggs are usually attached to the roof of a cave or crevice — a clay pot, a length of pipe, or, as one breeder found, the underside of a leaf buried in the litter, the fish ignoring the pots provided. The female guards the clutch closely; in one published account she emerged with free-swimming fry after about four days and led them through dense cover, vanishing into algae or leaf litter at any threat, while the male worked as an outer sentry.

Spawning under the right water is not especially hard — this is not the genus's most difficult fish — but rearing is the bottleneck. Newly hatched fry are acutely sensitive to water chemistry, and older hobby accounts (Römer's Cichlid Atlas among them) flag young fish as prone to skin parasites in the wrong conditions. The breeder consensus is very soft, acidic water, frequent but small water changes, and several tiny meals a day, starting with microworms and newly hatched brine shrimp. As with many Apistogramma, brood sex ratio is temperature-sensitive, so stable warmth in the upper part of the range matters for producing balanced batches.

In the aquarium

This is not a beginner's fish, and it is worth saying plainly: Apistogramma elizabethae turns up far less often than Apistogramma cacatuoides or Apistogramma agassizii, costs more when it does, and will not tolerate ordinary tap water. Success is decided by the chemistry you build before the fish arrives.

Water: aim for very soft, acidic, tannin-stained water — pH 5.5 to 6.0 is a sensible working range, and experienced keepers run as low as 5.0 to match the upper Rio Negro. Keep hardness as near zero as practical; anything above about 3 °dH will suppress breeding and may cause chronic health problems, so start from reverse-osmosis or rain water and reconstitute it rather than trying to soften tap water. Everyday temperature can sit between 24 and 81 °F (75-81 °F), with a modest drop into the low 20s used as a breeding trigger.

Tank and décor: a single pair does well in 15–20 US gal on a footprint of at least 60 × 12 in, while a species-only setup of 20–25 US gal holds a small harem of one male and two or three females and tends to behave more calmly. The substrate must be fine, light-coloured sand — white or buff silica — because the fish sifts it constantly as part of its natural foraging; denying it that is denying a behaviour it performs every hour of its life in the wild, and keepers (echoing Aquarium Glaser) find a fish on good sand more settled than one on gravel whatever the water reads. Litter the bottom generously with dried leaves — Indian almond (Catappa) is the most available, though any non-toxic broadleaf works — add a few smooth, water-worn tangles of driftwood or root, and provide caves: clay caves, halved terracotta pots, coconut shells, and short lengths of ceramic pipe all reduce female aggression and are essential for spawning. No rooted aquatic plants are needed, but floating plants and a few low-light species such as Microsorum or Anubias help diffuse the light and add shelter.

Tankmates: in temperament the fish is tractable — less belligerent than, say, Apistogramma cacatuoides — but its tiny size (1.5 in at best for a male) and need for extremely acidic water rule out most community companions on chemistry alone. The natural match is blackwater fish that genuinely thrive below pH 6: pencilfish (Nannostomus) or small tetras such as cardinal, black neon, or Paracheirodon simulans, which act as dither fish and settle the pair without competing for food at the substrate. Pygmy corydoras or otocinclus can share the space if the chemistry suits them, though many cory species prefer somewhat harder water. Avoid any fish large enough to swallow the fry or bully a female confined to a cave with eggs, avoid other cave-spawning cichlids (territorial interference can be serious even in a large footprint), and keep out loricariid catfish, which commandeer caves and can leave a female unwilling to spawn.

Common mistakes: three patterns recur. First, softening too little — a pH of 6.0 in 10 °dH water is not the ultrasoft upper Rio Negro, and pH without low minerals is not enough. Second, too small or too bare a tank — a cramped, featureless pair fights instead of breeding, and a female with nowhere to retreat may be killed by the male. Third, impatience at the rearing bottleneck — spawning itself is not especially hard once conditions are right, but the fry are fragile and need pristine water, tiny foods (infusoria, microworms, and baby brine shrimp), and stable warmth; a pair that spawns yet loses every batch is almost always fighting water quality or temperature swings in the first two weeks after free-swimming. Buy juveniles unsexed and grow a group of five or six on together — the surest route to a pair, since only adult males carry the lengthened lyre-to-lance tail and the tall, sail-like dorsal. The stress blotch doubles as a welfare gauge: a fish wearing it constantly is telling you the environment is wrong.

Conservation

Apistogramma elizabethae is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessed 7 November 2018, published 2022 by Brazil's Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade, ICMBio; reviewer P. Reis), with an unknown population trend. It is a Brazilian endemic of the upper Rio Negro, described as naturally uncommon and low in abundance. Its main documented pressure is collection for the international ornamental-fish trade: because it lives in a biologically low-productivity blackwater environment, the assessors note that even modest harvest could meaningfully affect local subpopulations, and there are unquantified signs of local declines. The species is listed under Brazil's interministerial regulation (Brasil 2012) governing ornamental and aquarium fish capture, and carries no CITES listing.

What keeps it off a threatened category is geography. The middle-to-upper Rio Negro holds an unusually dense network of protected areas — conservation units and Indigenous lands — that almost certainly shelters much of the species' range; ICMBio's recommendation is monitoring of both wild populations and trade catches rather than any emergency action.

The wider basin context fits the no-overstatement rule: the species is secure on paper, but the Rio Negro is not without strain. As a major blackwater river it carries a globally significant flux of dissolved organic carbon, and its tributaries face deforestation, illegal gold mining and associated mercury, and a warming, increasingly disturbed climate. For a sand-sifting blackwater specialist tied to soft, acidic, leaf-littered creeks, the relevant long-term risks are habitat degradation and sustained collection rather than population collapse. The upper-Negro ornamental fishery, framed responsibly, can even be a conservation ally: the well-documented 'buy a fish, save a tree' model of the Rio Negro piaba trade ties local livelihoods to keeping the forest and its waters intact — the same waters this little cichlid depends on.
