Apistogramma mendezi is a slender, lyre-tailed dwarf cichlid from the blackwater streams of the middle and upper Rio Negro in Amazonas, Brazil. Uwe Römer described it in 1994 and named it for Chico Mendes, the Brazilian conservationist murdered for defending the Amazon forest. It belongs to the tricky Apistogramma paucisquamis complex, and in the trade it is routinely mixed up with its near-twins — the caudal-fin pattern is the practical way to tell them apart. Almost everything about keeping it comes back to its water: the Rio Negro is among the most acidic, tea-stained, mineral-free freshwater on Earth, and this fish needs a close copy of it or its eggs fungus. Wild-caught and uncommon in shops, it is a rewarding specialist's fish rather than a first dwarf cichlid.

Taxonomy & naming

Apistogramma mendezi was described by the German Apistogramma specialist Uwe Römer in 1994, in the first issue of the journal aqua (Journal of Ichthyology and Aquatic Biology), from specimens taken in the Rio Negro system. The Catalog of Fishes fixes the holotype as ZFMK 17458, held in the Zoologisches Forschungsmuseum Alexander Koenig in Bonn, with the paratype series split between that museum and the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA) in Manaus. The type locality is the Rio Salgado — an igarapé, or forest stream, near Barcelos on the Rio Negro, Amazonas State, Brazil, at roughly 0°01'S, 63°04'W. The genus Apistogramma was erected by Regan in 1913, joining the Greek apistos ('uncertain, unreliable') and gramma ('line') for the variably developed lateral line that muddled early descriptions. The epithet honours Francisco 'Chico' Mendes (1944-1988), the rubber tapper and union organiser murdered for defending the Amazon forest — the same name later carried by the Brazilian conservation agency, the Instituto Chico Mendes, that would assess the fish's Red List status.

Within the subfamily Geophaginae, Apistogramma mendezi sits in the Apistogramma paucisquamis complex of the Apistogramma bitaeniata group, part of the wider Apistogramma agassizii sublineage. The hobby tags it with the DATZ 'A' codes A220, A221 and A222 — labels for similar-looking, possibly conspecific populations that differ mainly in caudal-fin markings; an orange-bellied form sells as Apistogramma mendezi 'orange' (A222), and a 'fork-band' (gabelband) form from the Rio Jaú may belong here too. Its closest confusables — Apistogramma paucisquamis, Apistogramma elizabethae and Apistogramma uaupesi — all share the prolonged caudal-fin spines, and the long-running mendezi-versus-paucisquamis argument on specialist forums is a fair measure of how fine the distinctions are. The two are not even reliably separate on a map: importers have received Apistogramma mendezi and Apistogramma paucisquamis mixed in the same consignments from east of Barcelos, which points to the pair living side by side there and makes shop identification genuinely hard.

Morphology

This is a small fish. Wild adults reach a standard length of only about 1.5 in, though finnage carries the largest males to roughly 3 in in total length, and importers usually offer stock at 1.5–2.5 in. The body is fairly slender and light brown, crossed by a broad dark lateral band that runs from the eye into the tail, with several thinner stripes below it and a matching bar through the eye; a distinct 'belly stripe' beneath the lateral band is well marked in some populations. Mature males add blue to the pelvic and anal fins and a dorsal fin that shades through red, brown, yellow and blue, and they carry the group's signature feature: a lyrate (lyre-shaped) caudal fin produced by elongation of the upper and lower fin rays. Females stay plainer outside breeding, but a courting or brood-guarding female turns vivid yellow with bold black markings.

Two cautions belong here. The species is markedly polychromatic, so males from a single population can differ individually in colour — a row of fish in a shop tank may not look like one kind. And the caudal-fin pattern, not colour, is the working key to separating it from Apistogramma paucisquamis: Apistogramma mendezi tends to carry longitudinal (horizontal) stripes in the lower tail and rounded spots above, while Apistogramma paucisquamis males show a vertically striped tail. Even that is imperfect, because eastern and western Apistogramma mendezi populations differ in whether their caudal lines run horizontally or vertically, and frightened or neutral-mood fish of both species look much alike. In the original description Römer separated Apistogramma mendezi from its lyre-tailed relatives on a combination of finer characters — complete scaling on the caudal peduncle and the arrangement of the ventral bars — rather than on colour alone.

Habitat

Apistogramma mendezi is endemic to Brazil and, on the best current authority, restricted to the middle and upper Rio Negro between Barcelos and Santa Isabel do Rio Negro, in Amazonas State (Kullander 2003; IUCN). That corrects a common trade-derived impression of a 'lower Rio Negro' fish: the type locality at Barcelos and the documented range both sit well upriver of the Negro's mouth, and most fish entering the trade are collected further upstream still, around Santa Isabel do Rio Negro and São Gabriel da Cachoeira, and labelled accordingly.

This is blackwater in the strict sense. The Rio Negro's tributaries run tea-coloured and acidic, stained by dissolved humic and tannic compounds leached from the flooded forest, with very low conductivity and negligible hardness; field and habitat reports put the pH between about 4.0 and 6.0 and the water exceptionally soft. The fish keeps to shallow marginal zones floored with submerged leaf litter over sand or mud, among wood and woody debris in shaded forest streams and inundated forest — Brazilian field workers describe it as living almost exclusively in shallow blackwater margins carpeted with drowned leaves. The water there is barely deep: the close relative Apistogramma paucisquamis, which shares these leaf-litter shores and at times the very same streams, is recorded from just 4–15.5 in of water, and Apistogramma mendezi is best read as another shallow leaf-bed dweller (its own exact depth band is not separately published — a genus- and habitat-typical inference, flagged as such). Recorded community associates include small characids and lebiasinids, Corydoras catfishes, and other dwarf cichlids, Apistogramma paucisquamis among them.

Feeding

Like Apistogramma generally, Apistogramma mendezi is a micro-predator rather than a true omnivore. FishBase puts its trophic level near 3.3, and the genus feeds chiefly on benthic invertebrates — small crustaceans, insect larvae and other tiny prey sifted from the substrate and leaf litter. (No gut-content study specific to Apistogramma mendezi has been published, so this diet is drawn from the well-documented feeding ecology of the genus and flagged as genus-typical.) In the nutrient-poor blackwater of the Rio Negro the leaf-litter layer holds most of the available invertebrate life, which makes that litter the effective foundation of the food web; a fish this size is both a small predator within it and prey for larger characins and pike cichlids.

Its ecological role is that of a bottom-oriented specialist in a low-productivity system. The same humic, acidic water that makes the habitat distinctive also limits its biological richness — part of why the dwarf cichlids here are small, cryptic and tied closely to cover. In the aquarium the fish takes live and frozen foods readily — Artemia, Daphnia and chironomid larvae (bloodworm) — and most individuals accept prepared diets in time.

Mating

Apistogramma mendezi forms the loose, female-choice harem associations typical of the genus: the females do the choosing, which is why, where lookalike species share a stream, a male has to advertise a distinctive pattern so a female can recognise her own kind — the leading explanation for the contrasting caudal and belly markings in this fish. A single male holds a broad territory that overlaps the smaller territories of one or more ripe females, each defending her own cave or crevice.

The practical catch, reported consistently by keepers, is that Apistogramma mendezi males are unusually rough toward females. In a small tank a male's constant attention can drive females into permanent hiding and off their food; one breeder watched a male harass two females in a 15-gallon tank until both stopped eating, and had to pull him out entirely before they recovered and ripened. Hence the standard advice: a large, heavily structured tank with broken sightlines, and females conditioned separately, since males by contrast seem ready to spawn whenever they are in reasonable health. This mix of female-led territoriality and male aggression is the main reason the species is reckoned harder to breed than its more forgiving relatives.

Breeding

Apistogramma mendezi is a cave (substrate) spawner. The female fixes her eggs to the ceiling of a crevice or cavity — a rock overhang, a root hollow, or, in captivity, a flowerpot or length of pipe — and then leads the parental care, fanning and guarding first the clutch and then the wrigglers and fry while the male patrols the wider territory; FishBase notes simply that the eggs are attached to the cave roof and tended by the female. In small aquaria a female can turn hyper-aggressive once she has eggs, and keepers often remove the male at that point. No exact wild clutch count has been published for Apistogramma mendezi; captive spawns are modest by cichlid standards, on the order of a few dozen up to perhaps a hundred eggs (a genus-typical range — small Apistogramma broods commonly run from a few dozen to around 80 eggs — flagged as inferred rather than measured for this species).

Wild-type fish are demanding to spawn successfully. The recurring failure is fungused eggs: in one detailed account both females of a pair spawned but every egg fungused over, and only after the pH was lowered with dilute phosphoric acid did the next clutches hatch — a plain sign that this lineage really does need the soft, strongly acidic water of its home streams for the eggs to develop. Once they are free-swimming the fry are unremarkable to rear, taking microworm and newly hatched brine shrimp and staking out small territories within a couple of months; the main in-tank loss is the male picking off fry at close quarters. One point worth flagging for anyone planning a brood: like every Apistogramma studied to date, this lineage shows temperature-dependent sex determination, so the rearing temperature skews the sex ratio of the fry — a real consideration for the hobby and, as the next section covers, for wild populations facing a warming forest.

In the aquarium

Apistogramma mendezi is not a beginner's fish, and it is genuinely uncommon in the hobby even by the standards of specialist Apistogramma keeping. Everything turns on water chemistry: the species comes from among the most chemically extreme freshwater on Earth, and its eggs will not develop reliably unless the water is close to what the Rio Negro provides. The tell-tale failure keepers report is a clutch that funguses solid — eggs that look fine for a day, then go white — and the fix is always to lower the pH and strip out almost all hardness, not merely to brighten the fish or coax a display.

Water: successful breeders target a pH of 4.5 to 5.5 and conductivity below 50 µS/cm, usually blending reverse-osmosis water with peat-filtered or blackwater-extract conditioned water. The goal is a tank that looks like Rio Negro water — dark tea-brown, with almost no measurable hardness; a pH of 6.5 or higher, even in soft water, puts egg survival at serious risk. Temperature can sit anywhere from 73–81 °F for routine keeping, with a modest rise to around 81–82 °F sometimes used to trigger spawning after a cooler conditioning period.

Tank: a pair or small harem needs roughly 20–25 US gal as a floor, laid out to echo the shallow, leaf-littered margins the fish come from — a sand or fine-gravel base under a layer of dried, unsterilised leaf litter (Indian almond, beech or oak leaves are all used), several clay caves or coconut-shell halves in different sizes (females are smaller and prefer tighter entrances), driftwood, and living or plastic plants around the edges to break sightlines. Floating plants that cut the surface light reinforce the shaded feel the fish expect, and the tannins leaching from leaves and wood are not just decoration: they buffer the chemistry in the right direction, soften the light, and seem to ease the stress response that suppresses breeding in acid-sensitive cichlids.

The mating system is the other management problem. Males are much larger than females and can be relentlessly aggressive toward them, so two or three females in a tank with enough structure for each to hold a cave out of the male's direct line of sight is usually workable, while a single pair in a small, open tank often is not. Condition the sexes apart, put the female into the prepared tank first so she claims a cave, then add the male; once she is guarding eggs, most keepers take the male out entirely, because a brooding female turns fiercely defensive and his presence sparks constant skirmishing that stresses both fish and risks the clutch. Sexing is easy: males are appreciably larger, wear the elongated lyre-shaped caudal and show blue in the anal and pelvic fins, while females are rounder, smaller, and turn vivid yellow with bold black facial and body markings when in condition or guarding fry.

Tankmates: small dither fish that tolerate extreme blackwater suit it best and help the cichlids feel less exposed — pencilfish (Nannostomus spp.), small characids such as Hyphessobrycon or Moenkhausia species, and Corydoras from the same Rio Negro drainage. Leave out anything big enough to treat Apistogramma mendezi as prey, or fast enough to outcompete it at feeding. Other Apistogramma species are a mistake unless the tank is very large, since males of related lyre-tailed fish will court each other's females and the resulting territorial chaos is bad for all concerned; other substrate-hugging cichlids, even peaceful ones, are best skipped at this size too.

Feeding and common mistakes: the fish takes live and frozen invertebrates greedily — newly hatched brine shrimp, Daphnia, small bloodworm and white mosquito larvae — and most settled individuals will accept high-quality sinking micro-pellets in time, with varied, protein-rich feeding key to conditioning females and holding male colour. Beyond the chemistry, the usual error is letting the female go underfed: in a large, broken-up tank the male can monopolise food, so feeding in several spots at once, or using a feeding ring, helps keep her eating. The bargain is simple — a keeper who can hold genuine Rio Negro conditions will find Apistogramma mendezi relatively cooperative, while one who cannot will lose every spawn to fungus. It is, honestly, a specialist-only species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma mendezi as Least Concern. The assessment was carried out by Brazil's Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) — fittingly, the agency that shares the fish's namesake — completed on 7 November 2018 and published in 2022. It describes the species as relatively frequent though not abundant, endemic to the middle and upper Rio Negro, and notes that while the fish is of high interest to the aquarium trade in Asian, European and American markets, regulated ornamental collection is not currently judged a threat that puts it at risk of extinction. It is not CITES-listed and rates as of low fishing vulnerability. The plain headline is that the species itself is not considered threatened.

That status sits inside a more nuanced basin picture, and the assessment flags two caveats of its own: there is no record of the species inside any protected area along the main Rio Negro channel, and it recommends monitoring both the wild population and ornamental catches. The middle Rio Negro is the heart of South America's wild ornamental-fish trade, studied for decades by Project Piaba, which argues that a well-managed aquarium fishery gives riverside communities an economic reason to keep the forest and river intact rather than clear them — so for this fish the larger risk is not over-collection but degradation of the blackwater habitat itself. Deforestation is the clearest such threat: work by Beninde, Römer and colleagues (2020) shows that clearing streamside forest sharply raises water temperatures in Apistogramma habitats, and because the genus has temperature-dependent sex determination, that warming can skew wild sex ratios and disrupt breeding. In short, Apistogramma mendezi is Least Concern today, but it depends on a specialised, low-productivity blackwater system that is sensitive to forest loss — a case where keeping the watershed healthy matters more than the Red List category alone suggests.
