Apistogramma gephyra is a small blackwater dwarf cichlid from Brazil's Rio Negro and the neighbouring lower-Amazon channels, named for the way it once seemed to bridge two better-known relatives. In the wild it is the quieter near-twin of the hugely popular Apistogramma agassizii — a more subdued member of the same species complex, told apart by little more than a red seam along the dorsal fin and a rounder tail. Almost every fish that reaches the trade is a wild import, frequently mislabelled as Apistogramma agassizii, so getting a correctly identified pair is the first hurdle. It is a fish for keepers who already know their apistos, holding condition only in the extraordinarily soft, acidic water of its native streams.

Taxonomy & naming

Apistogramma gephyra was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in 1980, in his landmark revision of the genus — Bonner Zoologische Monographien No. 14, pages 131-134. The holotype, IRSNB 581, sits at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels alongside paratypes IRSNB 582-583; the type locality is a small forest igarapé (stream) draining into the Rio Negro in the Anavilhanas Archipelago, around 3°00'S 60°45'W in Amazonas State, Brazil.

The name carries the story. "Gephyra" is Greek for "bridge," and Kullander chose it deliberately: he read the fish as a morphological span between Apistogramma agassizii and Apistogramma pertensis — then placed in different species groups — pointing to shared characters such as the lack of dark pigment on the first dorsal and pelvic spines. That reading is now treated as a historical artifact rather than a phylogenetic statement; specialists such as Mike Wise on apistogramma.com note it no longer holds, and the species sits in the agassizii complex as a more restrained relative of Apistogramma agassizii. Catalog of Fishes and FishBase both list it as valid — Apistogramma gephyra Kullander 1980, family Cichlidae. Trade labels heard in the hobby include redseam dwarf cichlid, the German Rotsaum-Zwergbuntbarsch, and the aquarist codes A231-A233, but none is an established common name, so the scientific name remains the reliable one.

Morphology

This is a genuinely small fish. Kullander's material gives a maximum of about 1.5 in standard length for males, with females reaching roughly 1.5 in total length — smaller and more slender than the superficially similar Apistogramma agassizii. Males show the lateral band, faint to bold lateral spotting, and the elongated finnage typical of the genus; females in neutral dress are an unassuming grayish-brown to dusky yellow, switching to vivid black-on-yellow when guarding eggs or fry.

The real problem is telling Apistogramma gephyra from Apistogramma agassizii, with which it shares water and almost shares a wardrobe. Two characters do the work. First, Apistogramma gephyra carries a red to red-orange margin along the top of the dorsal fin; this red seam is present in essentially all Apistogramma gephyra and in only a few Apistogramma agassizii forms, and the German wholesaler Aquarium Glaser reports using it as a reliable sorting cue in the trade. Second, the caudal fin is rounded, often with a pale submarginal band, where Apistogramma agassizii develops a pointed, spade-shaped tail. Like all Apistogramma, wild males are polychromatic — several differently coloured male forms occur within one population, so no single photograph captures the species. Juveniles add a trap, sometimes showing two lateral-line spots that invite confusion with female Apistogramma elizabethae. Adult dimorphism is plain: males larger, longer-finned and more strongly patterned; females smaller and plainer, turning dramatically darker-and-yellower in brood dress.

Habitat

Apistogramma gephyra is endemic to Brazil, centred on the lower and middle Rio Negro but reaching into the wider lower-Amazon system. The Brazilian Red List maps records from Barcelos and Manaus on the Negro, from the Solimões-Amazonas main stem at Coari, Codajás, and Itacoatiara, and from the lower Rio Purus, the Rio Maués-Açu, and the Rio Nhamundá, across Amazonas and Pará states; its estimated extent of occurrence is about 22,500 km2 (8,700 sq mi). Hobby accounts add the Rio Branco drainage and suspect the true range is still imperfectly known.

Water chemistry defines the habitat: forest-floor streams and flooded margins of the Rio Negro region, tea-stained by dissolved tannins, with sandy bottoms strewn in leaf litter and submerged wood. The water is exceptionally soft and acidic — FishBase summarizes pH 5.5-6.0 and hardness up to about 5 dH at 73–86 °F (73-86 °F), while field collectors routinely report far more extreme values, pH below 4.5 and, in some clearwater and blackwater stretches, readings near pH 4 and hardness around 1 dH. It is a benthopelagic leaf-litter dweller of shallow, dimly lit, structurally complex water rather than the open river, holding to the margins where wood, litter, and overhanging forest break the light.

Feeding

Like its congeners, Apistogramma gephyra is a small benthic micro-predator that works the leaf litter and sediment, and FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.3. There is no dedicated wild-diet study for the species, so the picture comes from the genus: Apistogramma sift sand and detritus for tiny invertebrates, crustaceans, insect larvae, and other meiofauna, picking through the litter layer rather than chasing prey in open water. Captive fish confirm this — they take live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, Artemia, and small crustaceans with enthusiasm, and accept prepared flakes and pellets more grudgingly.

Its role is that of a leaf-litter specialist in a famously nutrient-poor system: the Rio Negro's blackwater is acidic and low in dissolved minerals, and the litter banks it exploits are among the more productive microhabitats there — feeding the invertebrates the cichlid eats while the same tangle of wood and leaves hides it from larger predators.

Mating

Apistogramma gephyra follows the genus's harem-polygynous template, though by Apistogramma standards it sits on the gentler side. It can be kept — and presumably occurs — as pairs, trios, or harems depending on space and female numbers, with a dominant male holding a broad territory that overlaps the smaller, cave-centred territories of several females. Much of the chasing keepers see is courtship rather than combat: a male herding an unreceptive female who, in a planted, broken-up tank, simply withdraws — and experienced breeders rate its aggression as only average for the genus.

Pair formation revolves around a spawning cave. A receptive female colours up into her black-on-yellow dress, prepares a small cave or crevice, and admits the male only to fertilize before driving him off again. The geometry is the familiar dwarf-cichlid one — the male commands open water and the perimeter while the female commits to the nest — but one male can claim large stretches of bottom, so in a confined tank he may crowd out rivals before spawning even begins. Success therefore depends on a large footprint and enough broken sightlines for females to hold their own caves.

Breeding

Apistogramma gephyra is a cave-spawning substrate brooder with female-dominated care, the standard mode for the genus. Pairs deposit eggs on the ceiling of a small cave or crevice; reported clutches run from roughly 30 up to a maximum near 200 eggs, which the female tends and fans while the male holds a wider perimeter. In a detailed account from the Potomac Valley Aquarium Society, the female sealed her chosen cave with gravel, drove the male off when he came too close, moved the wrigglers to a fresh cave, then led the free-swimming fry around the tank in bright yellow brood dress. Some keepers also report genuine biparental care, with males joining in fry defence.

The trigger that matters is water chemistry. Most Apistogramma gephyra in the trade are wild imports from blackwater localities, and they often need pH driven to 5.5 or lower, in very soft water, before they will spawn or even hold long-term condition; milder-locality fish exist, but you cannot tell which you have, so the honest approach is to start with clean, soft, acidic water — peat or botanical filtration lowers pH and adds tannins — and adjust from there. Captive-bred stock, where available, is more forgiving, sometimes spawning at pH up to about 6.5 where wild imports will not.

In the aquarium

Apistogramma gephyra is uncommon and not a beginner's fish. Nearly all circulating stock is wild-caught from the Rio Negro, and the first task is getting it correctly labelled — it is routinely sold as Apistogramma agassizii, and the reverse mix-up happens too. Expect a smaller, slenderer fish than a standard Apistogramma agassizii, with the red dorsal margin and a rounded rather than pointed tail; confirm that before you buy.

Water — the single non-negotiable. The fish comes from some of the softest, most acidic freshwater on earth: the facts bracket pH 4.0-6.0 and hardness up to about 5 dH, with field fish often near pH 4.5 or below. Aim for pH 5.0-6.0 at 1-4 dH, using reverse-osmosis water remineralized low, or soft tap acidified with peat, botanicals, or leaf litter, and hold 75–82 °F (75-82 °F) — cooler for maintenance, warmer for conditioning. Hard, alkaline water is the commonest mistake in the hobby, and the slow decline it causes is entirely predictable.

Tank: a pair suits about 20 US gallons (roughly 20 US gal) with a long footprint; 30 gallons or more gives room for a harem of one male over two or three females, each anchored to her own cave. Furnish fine sand, dried leaf litter (Indian almond, oak), driftwood, and several caves (coconut shells, clay pots, stacked slate), under dim light from floating or heavy planting.

Tankmates: small, peaceful, acid-tolerant South Americans — pencilfish (Nannostomus spp.), cardinal or ember tetras, pygmy corydoras — whose open swimming acts as dither, calming these shy blackwater fish. Avoid anything large enough to outcompete them, boisterous enough to unsettle breeding territories, or likely to claim the floor; two males will not share a small tank. It is not a hard Apistogramma once the chemistry is right, but it is sensitive and less forgiving than the hardier dwarfs kept beside it — best for keepers who have already succeeded with an acid-water Apistogramma.

Conservation

Apistogramma gephyra is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, in an evaluation completed in 2018 and published in 2022 by Brazil's Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The assessors call it frequent though not abundant across a reasonably wide lower- and middle-Amazon range, with no significant threats identified and the population trend recorded as unknown; it enters the international ornamental-fish trade but, in their words, is not collected at high levels, and falls within no formal conservation program or protected area.

That security sits inside a basin under pressure but not in collapse. The Rio Negro is a blackwater river and a recognized freshwater biodiversity hotspot of several hundred fish species, and its ornamental fishery — studied for decades through efforts such as Project Piaba — is a comparatively low-impact, livelihood-supporting form of extraction rather than a driver of decline for small dwarf cichlids. The basin-scale concerns are habitat change: deforestation, watershed disturbance, and shifting hydrology that can alter the very water chemistry these acid-water specialists depend on. Because Apistogramma gephyra only thrives below pH 5, it is more exposed than most to anything that warms, clears, or chemically alters its blackwater streams — the slow erosion of soft, tannin-stained forest, more than the aquarium dipnet, is the real risk. The honest summary is the modest one the data support: a Least Concern fish, sustainably traded so far, in a strained but not failing river.
