Taxonomy & naming
John D. Haseman described this fish in 1911 from material the Carnegie Museum's expedition had collected near Manaus, Brazil. He did not treat it as a full species but as a variety, naming it Heterogramma taeniatum var. pertense — a subordinate form of what he considered the wider taeniata stock. The type locality is Manaus. The holotype, originally Carnegie Museum CM 2741, now sits at the Field Museum as FMNH 54171, and the single paratype (CM 2742) is recorded as missing. Sven Kullander moved the fish into its modern genus when he redescribed it in 1980, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists it as valid: Apistogramma pertensis (Haseman, 1911), subfamily Cichlinae.
The genus name pairs the Greek apistos, "uncertain" or "unreliable," with gramma, "line" or "marking" — a nod to the irregular, often incomplete lateral line that runs through these dwarf cichlids. The species epithet is genuinely murky. Haseman left no note on why he chose it, and later authors have read it two ways: Kullander through Latin pertinere, "to belong" (a variety that belongs to taeniata), while Mayland and Bork glossed it as "to assert oneself." Both are informed guesses rather than a stated derivation, and the honest position is that the meaning is unrecorded. Grammatically, at least, there is no ambiguity: pertensis follows the common Latin adjectival ending in -is (for masculine and feminine host genera) — the Cichlids Yearbook itself uses "Apistogramma pertensis" as its textbook illustration of the pattern — even though, per Haseman's silence, the descriptive sense behind the word remains unrecorded.
Apistogramma pertensis anchors its own informally named species-group. In Tom Christensen's working classification, built on the genetic study of Miller and Schliewen (2005), the Apistogramma pertensis-group gathers tiny to medium (1.5–3 in), elongate, slightly fusiform fishes that generally lack heavy patterning; it holds six described and at least six undescribed species, split into a pertensis-complex (males with round to oval tails) and a velifera-complex. That unsettled boundary shadows everything below. A fish sold as Apistogramma pertensis may be the nominal form or one of several near-identical relatives, and trade labels such as Apistogramma cf. meinkeni, Apistogramma sp. "Pimental" and Apistogramma sp. "Orangesaum" have all at times been folded into Apistogramma cf. pertensis.
Within that complex, Ad Konings singles out Apistogramma meinkeni as pertensis's closest look-alike, distinguishing both from another relative, Apistogramma iniridae of Colombia's Río Inírida drainage, on a single reliable mark: in iniridae the dark longitudinal stripe runs continuously from behind the eye onto the caudal peduncle, where it meets a black spot, while in pertensis and meinkeni that same stripe fades out before it reaches the peduncle spot, leaving a visible gap between stripe and spot.
Morphology
This is a genuinely small fish. FishBase gives a maximum of about 1.5 in standard length for males and 2 in total length for females — roughly 1.5 to 1.8 inches — and even the generous span quoted for the whole pertensis group tops out near 3 inches (3 in). Care sheets that cite "5 to 7 inches" have simply confused centimetres for inches; do not expect a fish that size.
The body is elongate and slightly fusiform, ground-coloured in greys, browns and yellows over a paler head, and crossed by a narrow horizontal band that fades out just ahead of a small spot at the tail base. The signature feature is the male's dorsal fin: the front membrane lobes, or lappets, draw out well past the spines and fuse into a tall, sail-like crest carried over the back — though its height varies markedly from one collecting locality to the next. Male tails run from rounded to oval by form, often dressed with vertical rows of small light-and-dark, frequently reddish, spots. Beyond that dorsal extravagance the sexes are not dramatically different: females stay smaller, to perhaps two inches, and plainer. One quirk sets this group apart from most Apistogramma — the female does not flush into intense brood yellow while guarding eggs, and longtime keepers describe her as comparatively drab even in motherhood. With so many similar forms in the complex, reliable identification often comes down to collection locality as much as to any single visible trait.
Habitat
Apistogramma pertensis lives in the central and lower Amazon basin of Brazil, recorded from the lower Rio Negro and along the Amazon-Solimões mainstem from Manacapuru downstream to Monte Alegre, across the states of Amazonas, Pará and Roraima. The IUCN puts its extent of occurrence at roughly 1.32 million km² — a very wide range for so small a fish — and treats it as a wetland species of the Amazon lowlands.
It is a shallow-margin, leaf-litter specialist. The Brazilian Red Book assessment (ICMBio 2018) places it in shallow margins among submerged leaflets in both clear and black waters — slow, shaded biotopes of drowned leaves, twigs and root tangles over sand, exactly the cover dwarf cichlids across the basin favour. These are not sparse habitats. Uwe Römer has reported counting as many as 475 individuals in a single square metre of leaf-packed margin, a density that overturns the assumption that every Apisto needs a large territory.
Water chemistry depends heavily on which drainage a population comes from, and this is where the complex bites. As Mike Wise and other Apistogramma students note, Rio Negro fish are true blackwater animals, forms attributed to the Rio Tapajós are clearwater, and populations from the Madeira and Tefé sit in between. Reported in-situ pH spans about 4.5 to 7.0, but the great majority of measurements fall below 6, in very soft, ion-poor water; FishBase brackets the genus-typical envelope at pH 5.5 and up, hardness from about 5 dH, and 73–86 °F. The blackwater extreme is severe — the middle and upper Rio Negro can run below pH 5 and almost devoid of dissolved minerals — and its tannin stain comes from dissolved organic carbon leached out of the surrounding flooded forest. Depth in these marginal habitats is shallow, on the order of the upper metre or two of the water column.
Feeding
Like its dwarf-cichlid relatives, Apistogramma pertensis is a small benthic micropredator. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.2, consistent with a diet of tiny invertebrates — insect larvae, micro-crustaceans and other meiofauna picked from the leaf litter and the top film of sediment. Species-specific feeding data is thin; the picture is inferred from its size, its small mouth, its leaf-litter habitat, and the well-documented habits of congeners that work through detritus and bottom debris for live prey. In its dense, structured world the fish is both hunter and hunted — a mid-chain animal that keeps invertebrate populations in check while feeding larger fishes. FishBase rates its fishing vulnerability as low and its population resilience as medium, with a modelled doubling time of roughly one and a half to four and a half years, figures typical of a small, fast-maturing, moderately fecund fish.
Mating
Outside of breeding Apistogramma pertensis is a sociable, generally peaceful fish. It lives at high density in its leaf-litter margins and, by Römer's account, even undertakes some seasonal movement and at times schools. Reproduction reorganizes that crowd into defended spaces. Where many Apistogramma run a polygynous harem — one male holding several females — the pertensis group is, in Christensen's reading, preferentially monogamous, and most keepers find these fish do best worked as pairs.
A compatible pair is usually obvious, and the bond is real. A hobbyist who kept wild imports through the mid-1980s described pairs with a "very well developed social life" that defended their chosen spots vigorously and bred across some five generations in soft rainwater near pH 5.5. That lived account squares with the literature's monogamous, cave-tending profile, though, as with any single keeper's experience, it is a corroborating signal rather than proof. Even peaceful by Apistogramma standards, a spawning fish turns combative within its small territory, so the practical rule is to give a pair complex cover and broken sightlines rather than open floor.
Breeding
Apistogramma pertensis is a cave-spawning substrate brooder with maternal care, the standard pattern for the genus. The female selects a sheltered site — a cave, a crevice, the underside of a leaf, or an upturned flowerpot in the aquarium — prepares it, and lays row after row of eggs on the ceiling, which the male fertilizes. FishBase, drawing on the keeping literature, records a clutch of about 120 eggs deposited on the cave ceiling and tended by the female. Once spawning ends she takes over complete care, fanning and guarding the clutch while the male patrols the wider territory; the eggs hatch and the fry become free-swimming roughly 8 to 10 days later, depending on temperature, after which the female shepherds the brood through the litter and, with some pairs, lets the male help.
Soft, acidic water is not merely preferred but functionally required for reproduction. Keepers consistently report that pairs will go through the motions in harder water, yet the eggs fail to develop unless conditions are soft and acidic, with pH below 6. Growing the fry on afterward is not the hard part; sustaining a captive line across multiple generations is, and more than one experienced keeper admits that wild-derived stock has a habit of quietly declining for reasons that remain unclear.
In the aquarium
Apistogramma pertensis is a small, undemanding fish by Apistogramma standards, but it rewards keepers who take its chemistry seriously.
Tank: A species pair sits comfortably in around 15 US gal, though a longer footprint beats depth — this fish works horizontally along shaded margins, not vertically through open water. Give it a sand or fine-gravel substrate it can mouth and sift, and furnish densely: dried leaf litter (Indian almond or oak), twisted roots and driftwood, and a scattering of caves. Small clay pots, ceramic tubes or coconut-shell halves laid on their side are all used readily. Live plants are not essential, but hardy low-light species such as Microsorum, Bucephalandra and Anubias grown on wood tolerate the soft, acidic water and add cover.
Water: This is the single most important variable. The species comes from blackwater and clearwater habitats where pH routinely falls below 6.0 and conductivity approaches distilled water. Aim for 75–82 °F, pH 5.0 to 6.5, and very low total hardness — ideally under 5 °dH. In practice that means RO or rain water cut with a little tap, or tap conditioned by peat filtration. A mild tannin stain from the leaf litter or a peat filter darkens the water, lowers stress and lifts colour. Fish in harder, more alkaline water may look reasonably well for months, but they will almost never spawn, and egg development stalls or fails outside soft, acidic conditions.
Tankmates: Choose peaceful, similarly tiny species from equivalent biotopes — small South American tetras such as Hyphessobrycon, Nannostomus pencilfish, or Otocinclus make unintrusive dithers without threatening the cichlids. Avoid anything boisterous, nippy, or larger than about 2 in; the pertensis group are not assertive even by Apistogramma standards, and they yield to persistent harassment rather than fight back. Other dwarf cichlids are generally a poor idea in a small tank, where the territory disputes stress both parties.
Pairs and sexing: Keep a single proven pair rather than a harem. The male's polygynous drive is weaker here, and multiple females in a small space usually ends with the subordinate one bullied relentlessly. Sexing is straightforward once the fish are adult — males are noticeably larger and carry the tall, sail-like dorsal fin; females are smaller, rounder in the belly and plainer. As noted under Morphology, the female does not flush bright yellow in brood dress, staying subdued even while guarding eggs, which can catch inexperienced keepers off guard.
Common mistakes: The commonest is trying to breed the fish in tap water of moderate hardness; the second is pairing them too quickly, before they have settled and conditioned on live or frozen food. Newly free-swimming fry take freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and commercial micro-powder feeds readily, so growing them on is easy enough. The subtler pitfall is losing a captive line over successive generations — breed from healthy, well-conditioned pairs and work the fry up on quality food from the start to give a self-sustaining colony its best chance.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma pertensis as Least Concern (assessed 29 October 2020 by R.G. Frederico, published in the 2025 update). The rationale is straightforward: despite little species-specific data, the fish has a very wide range across the central Amazon unlikely to face severe, range-wide threats, and it "appears to be common." The population trend is listed as unknown, no specific threats are recorded, and its only documented human use is as an ornamental, traded locally, nationally and internationally at the low, incidental volumes its trade status implies. No pertensis form is considered commercially profitable to breed, so the fish reaches the market mainly as bycatch among other wild imports rather than as a targeted harvest, which keeps collection pressure minor.
That reassuring status sits inside a larger Amazonian picture that is not uniformly calm. The basin's freshwater fishes are framed in the Neotropical literature — Kullander's cichlid treatment in the Reis, Kullander and Ferraris Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (2003), building on the ecology Lowe-McConnell synthesized — as extraordinarily diverse but increasingly pressured by deforestation, mining, hydropower dams and the deteriorating water quality those bring. A leaf-litter fish of clear and black marginal waters is exposed less to any single collapse than to the slow erosion of habitat: siltation, loss of the forest-derived dissolved organic carbon that defines its blackwater home, and altered flood regimes that degrade the shaded, ion-poor margins it depends on. The accurate statement is the careful one — Apistogramma pertensis itself is Least Concern and probably secure across its broad range, even as the basin around it faces real and growing strain, and the thinness of the data on this particular fish is itself a reason for continued attention.
