Apistogramma huascar is a small blackwater dwarf cichlid from the forest streams of northern Peru, described in 2006 from a tributary of the Río Nanay near Iquitos. It sits in the nijsseni species-complex and is, by its own describers' account, a near-twin of the better-known Apistogramma atahualpa — the two carry the names of feuding Inca half-brothers, Huáscar and Atahualpa, a nod both to how alike the fish look and to the Andean-Amazonian country they share. Like its relatives it is a cave-spawning, harem-forming midget of leaf-littered acid creeks, with a striking lyre-tailed male. It stays one of the genus's more obscure aquarium fish, and the IUCN still ranks it Data Deficient because no one is quite sure where its wild range begins and ends.

Taxonomy & naming

Apistogramma huascar was described in 2006 by Uwe Römer, Peter Pretor and Ingo Hahn in the second volume of Römer's Cichlid Atlas (Natural History of South American Dwarf Cichlids, Mergus Verlag, Melle; ISBN 978-3-88244-041-6). The type series is twelve specimens from a small forest tributary of the Río Nanay southwest of Iquitos, in the Departamento Loreto of Peru, collected by the ornamental-fish exporter Julio Melgar in 2003. The holotype is held at the Senckenberg collection in Dresden (formerly the Museum für Tierkunde, MTD; register SNSD/MTD F 28800), with paratypes split between Dresden and the California Academy of Sciences (CAS ICH 223663–223668). One bibliographic caution is worth stating plainly: a widely copied hobby citation gives the authorship as 'Römer, Römer, Soares & Hahn, 2006', but the Catalog of Fishes, FishBase, GBIF, the IUCN and ResearchGate's own record of the chapter all carry the name as Apistogramma huascar Römer, Pretor & Hahn, 2006 — that three-author form is used here. Römer and colleagues placed the fish in the Apistogramma-nijsseni-complex, within the regani lineage of the genus, and framed it explicitly as a twin-species of Apistogramma atahualpa Römer, 1997, the two separated chiefly by details of their black markings and live colour. That pairing also drives the name. Huascar is a noun in apposition honouring the Inca prince Huáscar, half-brother and rival of the last Inca ruler Atahualpa, whose own name graces the twin species; the describers chose it for the 'large phenotypical similarity' between the fish and for their shared origin in Tahuantinsuyu, the old Inca realm. In the hobby the fish carries the dealer code A 175/A 176 and the trade labels 'Sunpin' and 'Sunrise' — aquarium-strain names rather than established common names.

Morphology

This is a true dwarf cichlid. FishBase, drawing on Römer's own measurements, gives a maximum of about 2 in standard length (snout to tail base) for males and 1.5 in for females; counting the tail, aquarium specimens are often quoted nearer 3 in total length, but by any measure a large male is a fish you could lay across two fingers. The body is the typical Apistogramma shape — laterally compressed and moderately deep — with fifteen dorsal-fin spines and six or seven soft rays. The diagnostic pattern from the original description combines a dark lateral band running the length of the flank with two to four abdominal stripes built from short, upright spots, a broadened bar through the cheek, and a row of dorsal blotches that climb onto the base of the dorsal fin. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced and makes the sexes easy to tell apart. Males are larger and far more colourful, with a yellow-to-orange breast and an extended, lyre-shaped (lyrate) caudal fin whose upper and lower lobes draw out into points — the feature behind the 'tail-tip' nicknames attached to the species and its look-alikes. Females are smaller and plainer in browns and yellows but show a distinctive silvery-white dorsal fin, and like other nijsseni-group females they turn an intense yellow with bold black markings when guarding eggs. The very marks that diagnose Apistogramma huascar also make it hard to separate from its relatives in a shop tank: it is effectively a colour-pattern twin of Apistogramma atahualpa, and several undescribed 'cf. huascar' forms differ only in the exact shape of the caudal spot and the width of the lateral band.

Habitat

The type locality is unambiguous — a little blackwater forest creek in the Río Nanay basin southwest of Iquitos — but the species' full wild range is genuinely uncertain, which is the main reason it sits in the IUCN's Data Deficient bin. Because Römer and colleagues worked largely from exported trade specimens, FishBase and the IUCN both hedge the distribution as 'likely from northwestern Peru', and the Red List notes only that it occurs in the Peruvian Amazon of Loreto. Hobbyist collectors have muddied the picture as much as clarified it. Mark Breeze and Tom Christoffersen report taking fish they call Apistogramma cf. huascar in the Río Tapiche drainage (2009) and the Río Gálvez near Angamos on the Peru–Brazil border (2010), and they stress that these sites lie well outside — and on the opposite side of the Amazon from — the area Römer named, so whether these are true huascar or close congeners is unsettled. Where the field accounts do agree is the biotope. These are fish of very shallow, sluggish, strongly acidic blackwater jungle streams and floodplain pools, over fine white sand carpeted in leaf litter and shaded by forest, with submerged wood and root tangles for cover. The collectors describe water with a pH below 5 and conductivity so low as to be almost unmeasurable — the soft, ion-poor, tannin-stained water typical of the region's terra-firme creeks — and found Apistogramma agassizii sharing the same habitat nearby. Aquarium-care sources, extrapolating from this, cite roughly pH 4–6.5 and temperatures around 72–84 °F. No published depth figure exists; these are centimetres-to-low-metres habitats, so a working band of about 0–3 ft reflects the shallow leaf-litter margins the fish actually uses rather than a measured range.

Feeding

Apistogramma huascar has not been the subject of a dedicated diet study, and FishBase carries no gut-content data for it; the trophic level it lists, around 3.3, is a model estimate from the fish's size and its close relatives rather than a measured value. What can be said rests on what the whole genus does and on where it lives. Apistogramma are micropredators of the leaf-litter zone — they hover over the fine sand and detritus, sift it, and snap up small benthic invertebrates: chironomid (midge) larvae and other aquatic insect larvae, tiny crustaceans such as copepods and ostracods, and worms, supplemented by whatever falls into or develops among the drowned leaves. In aquaria the fish takes standard dwarf-cichlid fare readily — live and frozen brine shrimp, daphnia and bloodworm, with good-quality dry foods accepted — and does best on a varied, invertebrate-rich diet. In its native creeks it fills the same modest niche as its congeners: a small, bottom-oriented invertebrate-picker working the interface of sand and leaf litter, and itself prey for the larger characins and pike cichlids of the same waters.

Mating

Like the rest of the nijsseni complex, Apistogramma huascar is best understood as a harem-polygynous cave spawner. In a roomy, structure-rich tank a single dominant male holds a loose territory that overlaps the smaller territories of several females, each defending her own patch around a chosen cave or sheltered crevice; the fish can equally be kept and bred as a simple pair. Courtship is female-driven in the manner typical of the genus: a ripe female, flushed bright yellow with her black markings intensified, displays to and solicits the male, then leads him to her cave. Day to day the fish are only mildly aggressive — keepers who have held groups in well-planted, heavily decorated tanks report surprisingly little fighting for an Apistogramma — but that calm depends on space and broken sightlines. Without enough visual barriers a dominant male or a brooding female will harass tankmates, and an unreceptive female in too small a tank can be bullied. Plenty of caves, leaf litter, wood and planting to split the floor into defendable parcels is the single most important condition for making the social system work, in the wild or the glass box.

Breeding

Apistogramma huascar is a substrate-brooding cave spawner with maternal care — there is no mouthbrooding here, despite a few oddball mouthbrooding cousins elsewhere in the genus (Apistogramma barlowi, Apistogramma megastoma). The female lays her eggs on the ceiling or wall of a small cave — a rock crevice, a half-buried coconut shell, an upturned pot, or simply the underside of leaf litter — and from that point runs the brood almost single-handed, guarding and fanning the clutch while the male patrols the wider territory. Hobby accounts put hatching at roughly two to three days, with the fry free-swimming after about a week; at that stage the female shepherds a tight school of young through the leaf litter and turns sharply aggressive toward anything that approaches, so in a small tank the male is often best removed once the eggs are laid. The exact clutch size for Apistogramma huascar has not been formally published, but it falls in the modest dwarf-cichlid range — nijsseni-group females typically tend on the order of a few dozen to a couple of hundred eggs. First foods are the standard sequence of infusoria and then newly hatched brine shrimp, and under good conditions the young grow quickly, reaching maturity in around half a year. The familiar spawning triggers for the group apply: soft, acidic, tannin-stained water, a biologically mature tank, warmth, frequent partial water changes, and heavy live-food conditioning.

In the aquarium

Apistogramma huascar is genuinely uncommon in the hobby. It surfaces occasionally through specialist importers who handle Peruvian ornamentals, but it is not a chain-retailer fish, and even dedicated dwarf-cichlid keepers may never meet it in trade. When it does appear it is sometimes mislabelled as Apistogramma atahualpa or listed as 'cf. huascar', since the two are near-identical to anyone not studying the caudal spot and lateral band carefully. Go in with realistic expectations: this is a fish for people already comfortable with Apistogramma who understand soft, acidic blackwater from the ground up. Rate the difficulty intermediate — it is not forgiving of hard, alkaline, or biologically immature water, and ammonia and nitrite spikes and even moderate nitrate accumulation are poorly tolerated.

Tank: a 60-litre (roughly 24-inch) tank is a workable minimum for a single pair, but 20–25 US gal gives a male enough territory to hold two or three females in the harem arrangement the species naturally adopts, which spreads out the harassment a lone female endures in a pair. Water: match the fish's origin. The facts here are pH 4.0–6.5 and 72–84 °F, with the spawning sweet spot toward the softer, more acidic end — pH around 5–6, conductivity below about 100 µS/cm, genuinely soft and tannin-stained. Reverse-osmosis water remineralised to very low hardness, conditioned with dried catappa (Indian almond) leaves and alder cones, reproduces the ion-poor blackwater of the Río Nanay tributaries more faithfully than any chemical additive; temperatures in the mid-to-upper twenties suit active conditioning, and a slight drop during a water change can trigger spawning.

Aquascape: fine white or light-coloured sand, both because the fish forage by sifting the surface and because a pale bottom shows off male colour. A generous layer of dried leaf litter over part of the floor is core husbandry, not decoration — foraging habitat, tannin leach, and cover for females and fry — completed by driftwood and branchy roots. Every female needs her own cave: small clay pots on their sides, half-buried coconut shells, slate lean-tos, or ceramic tubes, placed far enough apart that wood or planting breaks the sightlines between them. Dense background and midground planting — Echinodorus and Cryptocoryne, with floating cover from Salvinia or Ceratopteris — diffuses the light into the dappled character of a shaded forest stream.

Tankmates: small, peaceful, upper-column characins make ideal dither fish — cardinal tetras (Paracheirodon axelrodii), rummy-nose tetras (Hemigrammus bleheri), or similar blackwater species from the same region, whose movement in open water reassures the cichlids that conditions are safe. Avoid anything large enough to eat a fish under five centimetres, anything that competes for the bottom (other dwarf cichlids, small loaches, bottom catfish other than perhaps a single small bristlenose), and any species that demands hard, alkaline water. Do not mix Apistogramma huascar with Apistogramma atahualpa or any other nijsseni-complex fish unless the tank is large enough for genuinely separate territories — hybridisation is a real risk, and the territorial tension would be significant regardless.

Common mistakes: using tap water without adequate softening and acidification, keeping the fish in too small or too bare a tank, providing too few caves to allow a harem to form, and overfeeding in a way that spikes organic load in an already low-buffered system. Sexing adults is easy — the larger, lyrate-tailed, yellow-breasted male cannot be confused with the smaller, plainer female — but juveniles are harder, so buying a group of six to eight young fish and growing them out together is a reliable way to end up with at least one working pair. With stable soft-acid chemistry, live and frozen invertebrate foods, patience, and a mature tank, the fish is reproducible in captivity: the spawning is straightforward nijsseni-group cave-spawning, and the female is a capable mother.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List places Apistogramma huascar in the Data Deficient category (assessed 25 April 2014 by H. Ortega Torres, published 2016), and the reasoning is essentially an admission of ignorance rather than a verdict of safety: because the species was described from aquarium-trade specimens, its exact distribution is unknown, and there are no data on population size, trend, or specific threats. It is taken for the ornamental trade and is not otherwise used, and it carries no CITES listing. The honest position is that we do not know enough to call it secure or imperilled. What can be said is regional. The dwarf cichlids of Loreto live in small, shallow, low-buffered forest streams that are intrinsically vulnerable to disturbance — exactly the habitat the Peruvian fish-fauna reviews (Ortega et al. 2012) flag as exposed to deforestation, gold-mining and its mercury, expanding road and settlement networks, and intensifying fishing pressure around hubs such as Iquitos. Several of this fish's own close relatives described from the same district have been assessed as range-restricted and potentially endangered, and a narrow-range blackwater specialist with an unmapped distribution is precisely the profile most at risk from piecemeal habitat loss. None of this is documented as a present danger to Apistogramma huascar itself; it is the backdrop against which 'Data Deficient' should be read — a flag for the research the assessment calls for, not a clean bill of health.
