Hybridization watchi

Apistogramma wolli is a small blackwater dwarf cichlid from the Napo drainage of Loreto, in northern Peru — described only in 2015 and still rarely seen even in specialist collections. Its signature feature is the dominant male's set of swollen, butter-yellow lips set above massive jaws, a look it shares with only a handful of relatives in the Apistogramma nijsseni complex. Known from a mere six type specimens and a thin trickle of wild imports, it remains one of the genus's more enigmatic and under-documented members.

Taxonomy & naming

Apistogramma wolli was described in 2015 by Uwe Römer, David P. Soares, Carmen R. García Dávila, Fabrice Duponchelle, Jean-François Renno and Ingo Hahn, in a Vertebrate Zoology paper (volume 65, issue 3; DOI 10.3897/vz.65.e31523) that simultaneously re-described Apistogramma payaminonis Kullander, 1986 and named a second new species, Apistogramma feconat. The holotype is MUSM 43068 — a roughly 2 in SL dominant male — housed in the fish collection of the Museo de Historia Natural at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima; paratypes are split between the same institution and the Senckenberg collection in Dresden (SNSD). The nomenclatural act is registered in ZooBank. The epithet is a noun in apposition honouring Wolfgang "Wolli" Friedrich, a German aquarist and professional fish breeder whose decades of captive work — until he wound down his facility in early 2014 — contributed materially to the hobby's knowledge of cichlid reproduction.

The genus Apistogramma sits in the eartheater subfamily Geophaginae and is among the most species-rich of all Neotropical cichlid lineages, with on the order of ninety-plus valid species and a steady stream of new descriptions. Apistogramma wolli belongs to the Apistogramma nijsseni complex, a group of small forest-stream fish, and is closely allied to Apistogramma payaminonis. The describing authors and experienced hobbyists alike note that several similar, partly undescribed "payaminonis-like" forms circulate under provisional codes (A178, the "Pantoja" form). Telling them apart hinges on subtle, sometimes contested characters — the degree of lip enlargement in males and whether brooding females show one lateral spot or two. Mike Wise, a long-standing authority on the genus who collected near Pantoja with Tom Christensen and Julio Melgar, notes that Apistogramma wolli is distinguished by the combination of hypertrophic (massively enlarged), cacatuoides-like lips and an anal spot in males, where the field-collected Pantoja form shows only modest lip enlargement; he and the describers caution that genetic work will be needed to settle which of these forms are truly conspecific.

Morphology

This is a medium-sized Apistogramma. The original description gives males to about 2.5 in and females to roughly 1.5 in standard length (snout to tail base); FishBase carries a maximum of 2 in SL, and the holotype male measured about 2 in SL — so reported sizes vary with the individual and the source. The body is laterally compressed, moderately high-backed and elongate, with pronounced differences between the sexes in both shape and colour.

The diagnostic feature is the adult male's face: massive jaws and hypertrophied yellow lips that recall the swollen mouths of Apistogramma cacatuoides or Apistogramma barlowi. Males carry a dorsal fin with serrated, extended membranes and a lyrate caudal fin edged with red marginal bands on the upper and lower lobes; females have a truncated dorsal and a rounded caudal. Both sexes show a small squarish lateral spot centred on the third vertical bar — larger in females — and a prominent caudal spot, round in males but an upright oval in females. Meristics run to roughly 16–17 dorsal spines, 3 anal spines and 5–7 anal soft rays, with 23–24 vertebrae. In breeding dress, females turn the bold yellow-and-black typical of the nijsseni group; keepers report that Apistogramma wolli females show a single lateral spot, which helps separate them from the two-spotted brooding females of true Apistogramma payaminonis.

Habitat

Apistogramma wolli was described from six specimens collected in the catchment of the Río Napo in Loreto, northern Peru — specifically the wider vicinity of Cabo Pantoja (Cabo Pontoja), in a small forest stream feeding the Napo close to the Peru–Ecuador border. The describing authors flagged that, although the species likely ranges across the frontier, no voucher specimens confirm its presence on the Ecuadorian side, so its distribution there is best treated as probable rather than documented. Despite the prominence of the genus across the western Amazon, this is not a Rio Negro fish — it belongs firmly to the Napo system of the upper Amazon (Marañón–Amazonas) basin.

The habitat is classic dwarf-cichlid blackwater: a few small, shallow rainforest streams whose sandy bottoms are blanketed mainly by leaf litter, with only scarce driftwood. The fish are typically found hiding in that litter rather than in the open. Recorded in-situ chemistry is sparse but consistent with the biotope — soft, acidic, tannin-stained water; FishBase lists a lower pH bound near 6.3 and temperatures from about 77 °F upward. No published depth figure exists for the species, but these are shallow forest brooks, so the fish effectively occupy the top metre or so of the water column (a habitat-typical estimate, not a measured range). As with most members of its complex, Apistogramma wolli appears to be a narrow-range specialist of forest headwaters rather than a fish of the main river channels — and the describing authors note it is not common even within its known range.

Feeding

No dedicated diet study has been published for Apistogramma wolli, so its feeding ecology is inferred from its biotope and from the well-studied habits of its congeners (flagged here as inference rather than measurement). Like other small leaf-litter Apistogramma, it is best understood as a micropredator: a fish that sifts and picks through submerged litter and the top film of sand for small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms and other meiofauna. FishBase places it at an estimated trophic level of about 3.3, the value expected for a small carnivore of this kind.

In the wider community of a blackwater forest stream, a fish like Apistogramma wolli occupies the leaf-litter understorey, where the tannin-stained, nutrient-poor water and dense organic cover favour cryptic, small-bodied specialists. Such streams are low in dissolved minerals and primary productivity, and the invertebrate fauna of the litter layer forms the base of the food web that supports these dwarf cichlids; they in turn are prey for larger fish and probably for wading birds and other stream predators.

Mating

Apistogramma wolli follows the harem-polygynous social structure typical of the genus: a dominant male holds a territory that overlaps the smaller territories of one or more females, each defending her own spawning cavity. Pre-spawning courtship runs to the genus pattern of mutual lateral display, with the male flaring his serrated dorsal and lyrate tail and the female adopting bold yellow breeding dress.

Keeping reports converge on a picture of a feisty, demanding little fish. Experienced apisto keepers describe Apistogramma wolli females as notably aggressive toward one another, which argues for a generous footprint and visual breaks if more than one female is kept. Mike Wise reports that wild-caught Apistogramma wolli are demanding in their water values for breeding and that the females are not especially attentive parents — though tank-raised F1 fish settle far more readily, spawn regularly, and tolerate less extreme water. That contrast between touchy wild stock and easier captive-bred stock is one of the more reliable threads in the limited body of first-hand experience with the species.

Breeding

Like the rest of the nijsseni complex, Apistogramma wolli is a cave-spawning substrate brooder. The female takes a sheltered cavity — a rock crevice, a leaf-litter pocket or, in the aquarium, a cracked flowerpot or coconut shell — and lays her eggs on its ceiling or wall, then tends and fans the clutch while the male patrols the surrounding territory. There is no evidence it deviates into the facultative mouthbrooding seen in a couple of other northern-Peruvian Apistogramma. No clutch count has been published specifically for Apistogramma wolli; small Apistogramma of this size typically lay on the order of 40–80 eggs per spawn (a genus-typical figure, flagged as such rather than a measured value for this species). After the larvae become free-swimming the female leads and guards a tight school of fry through the litter, herding them back to cover at any disturbance.

Wild-caught fish are reported to need soft, warm, acidic water to spawn at all, mirroring the home stream; their captive-bred descendants breed under more forgiving conditions. The honest caveat from keepers is that Apistogramma wolli females can be indifferent mothers — eggs and fry are sometimes lost — so committed breeders often pull and artificially raise clutches from valuable wild stock until a reliable F1 line is established.

In the aquarium

Apistogramma wolli is rarely kept, even by Apistogramma specialists. Most hobbyists who have worked with it report that wild-caught stock is unforgiving: the fish will settle, eat, and display reasonably well, but wild-caught females typically refuse to spawn outside genuinely extreme blackwater chemistry. For that reason, captive-bred F1 fish — when available — are strongly preferable for most keepers. Experienced apisto enthusiasts who maintain a line note that second-generation fish are markedly more cooperative and breed under conditions merely very soft and acidic rather than the near-distilled values wild fish may require.

The water chemistry requirement is the defining challenge of the species. Apistogramma wolli comes from shallow Napo-drainage forest streams that are among the softest and most acidic waters in the Amazon basin. For wild-caught stock, the describing authors and field collectors suggest targeting pH in the range of 4.5–5.5 with near-zero carbonate hardness; total dissolved solids below 50 mg/L is a realistic target. Soft RO or rain water buffered with leaf-litter extract or commercial blackwater preparations is the standard approach. For captive-bred fish, a pH floor around 5.5–6.0 with very soft water (under 3–4 °dH) is workable. Temperature should be held at 77–84 °F. This is not a species for a community planted aquarium running on tap water, and prospective keepers should assess their water supply before acquiring the fish.

A tank of 23.5–31.5 in (roughly 15–20 US gal) is a practical minimum for a single-male group. Apistogramma wolli females are noted to be combative with one another, so a longer footprint with plentiful visual breaks is more important than volume alone. The floor should be fine white or buff sand, mimicking the stream substrate; a deep layer of dried leaves — Indian almond, beech, oak — over part of the bottom is not decoration but a functional requirement, both as a foraging habitat and as shelter. Several caves — terracotta half-pots, curved coco shells, stacked slate — should be provided, one per female plus a spare. Sparse driftwood and a surface mat of floating plants to diffuse light complete a biotope-appropriate setup. Bright, open aquaria stress this fish. Subdued lighting and a dark substrate visibly improve behaviour and colour.

Sexing is straightforward once fish are mature. Males are substantially larger (to ~2.5 in SL versus ~1.5 in for females), carry the diagnostic massive jaws and swollen yellow lips, have a serrated and flag-like dorsal fin, and develop a lyrate caudal with red-edged upper and lower lobes. Females are smaller, with a truncate dorsal, rounded caudal, and a single, prominent squarish lateral spot. Breeding females adopt the bold yellow-and-black dress typical of the nijsseni complex; a female showing that dress in a cave is almost certainly on eggs or guarding wrigglers. The most reliable harem size is one male with two or three females, but keeping more than two females demands enough space and cover that each has genuine visual separation.

For tankmates, the safest option is none — a species tank is the sensible choice for a fish this demanding and this infrequently kept. If some dither is desired to reduce skittishness, small, undemanding characins that share the same water chemistry — pencilfish (Nannostomus) are the classic choice — work well. Bottom-competing species and robust cichlids should be excluded. Common keeper mistakes include attempting to keep the species in water that is merely "moderately soft" rather than truly oligotrophic blackwater, providing insufficient cave structures (which forces females into open-water conflict), and underestimating the aggression of Apistogramma wolli females toward each other. Apistogramma wolli should be rated a species for experienced apisto keepers with the setup and water chemistry to do it properly; it is not a beginner's dwarf cichlid, and the honest advice is to seek captive-bred stock wherever possible.

Conservation

Apistogramma wolli has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List (Not Evaluated as of the 2025-2 version), and it carries no CITES listing. That absence of a formal status is itself telling: like most Amazonian cichlids, it has simply never been evaluated, rather than being judged secure. Its known range is small — a few forest streams in the Napo catchment of Loreto — and narrow-range endemism combined with demand on the ornamental market is exactly the profile that conservation-minded ichthyologists flag as a latent risk for the genus. Estivals and colleagues (2020), studying the wide-ranging Apistogramma agassizii, showed that nominal Apistogramma "species" often mask several genetically distinct, micro-endemic lineages, each more vulnerable to localised collection and habitat loss than a broad range would suggest; the same caution applies to the cluster of payaminonis-like forms that includes Apistogramma wolli.

Placed in the wider context of its waters, the western Amazon lowlands of Loreto are productive but increasingly strained. The describing authors devoted part of their 2015 paper to man-made hazards in the Marañón–Napo region, and large areas of Loreto were declared a national-emergency "disaster" zone in 2015 over hydrocarbon contamination from oil operations — the same pressure that bears on the closely related Apistogramma feconat, which occurs in an affected, protected catchment. The realistic threats here are watershed pollution, deforestation and the ornamental-fish trade, not collapse from a commercial fishery. The honest summary is that Apistogramma wolli is formally unevaluated and probably not in immediate danger, but it is a little-collected, narrow-range blackwater specialist living in a region under genuine and growing environmental stress — a fish about which we know too little to be complacent.
