Taxonomy & naming
Apistogramma playayacu was described by Uwe Römer, Joscha Beninde and Ingo Hahn in 2011, in volume 61 of the journal Vertebrate Zoology (pages 321–333, published online on 13 December 2011). They built the species on a generous type series of 41 preserved specimens. Both Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and FishBase treat the name as valid and credit it to Römer, Beninde & Hahn, 2011 — worth stressing, because the species is sometimes cited with a 2012 date that does not match the published record.
The holotype is FMNH 101589 (Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago), an adult male of 2 in standard length collected in October 1981 by M. Ibarra, R. Barriga and Uquillas. Its type locality is the Quebrada Playayacu where it enters Limoncocha, about 1 mi northeast of the village along the lake shore, at roughly 76°36′W / 00°22′S in Ecuador's Río Napo system. Paratypes are split between the Field Museum and the Museum für Tierkunde Dresden (MTD F), some from a second site — the flooded-forest edge of Laguna Zancudococha in the Río Aguarico drainage. The find has a good museum backstory: Römer, alongside the apisto specialists Mike Wise and David Soares, was at the Field Museum examining the type of an unrelated species when curators produced some undetermined Ecuadorian dwarf cichlids, and among the lots the team recognised this fish and a long-sought locality for it in the same moment.
The species belongs to Apistogramma, the largest radiation of Neotropical dwarf cichlids, within the subfamily Cichlinae and the tribe Geophagini (the eartheaters and their dwarf allies). Römer and colleagues placed it in the Apistogramma macmasteri complex of the wider Apistogramma regani lineage, following Römer's 2006 Cichlid Atlas framework, while cautioning that its exact position inside that cluster is still uncertain. Among described species it most closely resembles Apistogramma guttata of Venezuela, and it must also be separated from Apistogramma hoignei, Apistogramma rubrolineata, Apistogramma tucurui and Apistogramma alacrina. At the time of description it counted as the 71st valid species of the genus; the total has climbed well past a hundred since. The genus name compounds the Greek apistos ("uncertain, inconstant") with gramma/gramme ("line"), a nod to the irregular, often incomplete lateral line of these fishes. The epithet playayacu is a noun in apposition taken straight from the type locality, the Quebrada Playayacu — a blend of Spanish playa ("beach, sandbank") and the Quechua/Kichwa yacu ("water, river"), the same naming habit heard in regional names such as Picuruyacu and Limoncocha.
Morphology
This is a moderately large Apistogramma by the standards of a genus of true dwarfs. In the type series males reached about 2 in standard length (the largest measured 2 in SL) and females about 1.5 in SL, so a big male is a fish of roughly two inches in the body, a little more with the tail. The body is deep, laterally compressed and decidedly high-backed — in larger fish more than twice as deep as wide — and that, with a regularly arched dorsal profile and a fairly large head, gives it the stout, almost humped look the describers singled out.
The spotting is the diagnostic feature. Seven to eight horizontal rows of mostly triangular black spots run along the sides, denser and more regular than in most relatives, and there is no separate round lateral blotch. A dark spot sits on the caudal-fin base, split horizontally into two in most males but entire in females and small males. The cheek carries a single straight, narrow brown stripe, usually less than half the width of the pupil, and the preorbital stripe is framed by two fine parallel black lines; the first dorsal-fin membranes are blackish. Fin counts run to roughly XIV–XVI dorsal spines with 6–8 soft rays, three anal spines with 7–8 soft rays, and the caudal fin is rounded in both sexes. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced: males are about 20–25 percent larger than females, with the soft dorsal, anal and pelvic fins drawn out and the dorsal-fin membranes prolonged well past the spine tips — sometimes by half their length again. Live colour is still poorly documented, since the description leaned on preserved material plus a handful of aquarium photographs, but mature males show a yellowish ground with black cheek and nape striping, and females in breeding dress develop a row of three to five squarish dark blotches along the lateral band, the standard brood-care livery of the macmasteri complex.
Habitat
On present evidence Apistogramma playayacu is a narrow-range Ecuadorian endemic of the upper Río Napo basin, known from just two localities: the Quebrada Playayacu near Limoncocha (the type locality) and the flooded-forest margin of Laguna Zancudococha in the Río Aguarico drainage. The IUCN estimates an extent of occurrence of only about 7,0 mi², and the describers flagged that the true range — in particular whether it crosses into Peruvian waters of the same system — remains unsettled and needs fieldwork. Read the fish as an animal of the Napo's small forest streams (quebradas) and the vegetated edges of its oxbow lakes and lagoons, not of the main river channels.
Beyond that, the natural-history record is genuinely thin, and it is more honest to say so than to dress it up. The original description carried no in-situ readings of water chemistry, temperature or depth, and no detailed field report on the species has been published since. What can be said is contextual: dwarf cichlids of this kind in the Napo headwaters live in shallow water — typically the upper metre or two of leaf-littered, slow margins — over sandy and silty bottoms shaded by primary rainforest, in the soft, warm, tea-stained black- and clearwater that drains the Ecuadorian Amazon. The temperature and pH figures given for the species here come from that general biotope and from the needs of close relatives, not from measurements at the two collection sites, and should be read as typical-of-habitat rather than recorded.
Feeding
No diet study exists for Apistogramma playayacu, so its trophic ecology is inferred rather than observed. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.3, the value expected for a small invertebrate-leaning predator, and its body plan and habitat point the same way. Like the great majority of Apistogramma, it is best understood as a micropredator of the leaf-litter and benthic zone: a fish that sifts fine sediment, decaying leaves and submerged wood for aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms and other small invertebrates, working mainly the lower part of the water column. In its forest-stream community it would fill the small-cryptic-predator niche, threading among litter and roots where the same structure that feeds it also hides it from larger fishes. None of this is specific to Apistogramma playayacu — it is the well-established habit of the genus, applied to a species whose own feeding has simply never been watched in the field.
Mating
Courtship and pair formation in Apistogramma playayacu have not been described; what follows is read from its place in the macmasteri complex, whose reproductive behaviour is well documented across the genus. Apistogramma of this type are typically harem polygynists: a dominant male holds a larger territory that overlaps the smaller territories of one or more females, and the sexes lead mostly separate lives outside of spawning. As a female ripens she takes on an intense breeding livery — in this complex, the dark ground with a row of bold lateral blotches seen in the species' females — and turns strongly territorial around a chosen cavity. Pairing is female-initiated and short-lived as a social bond: the male mostly defends the wider area and fertilises, while the female commits to the nest. The one captive note that exists, a brief aquarium report by Kästner in 2005 that predates the formal description, showed no meaningful departure from close relatives — which is why the describers and the IUCN treat the biology as macmasteri-typical.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented in the wild for Apistogramma playayacu, and only a single short captive account predates its scientific description, so its reproduction is read here through the macmasteri complex to which it belongs. Members of that group are cave-spawning substrate breeders with strongly female-biased parental care. A ready female spawns inside a small, defensible cavity — a hollow under wood, a root tangle, a snail shell or, in aquaria, a small cave or flowerpot — gluing a clutch of adhesive eggs to the ceiling and then tending them more or less alone. The male guards the surrounding territory but adds little to direct brood care. In comparable Apistogramma the eggs hatch in roughly two to three days depending on temperature, and the larvae become free-swimming about a week after spawning, at which point the female leads and herds a wriggling cloud of fry through cover, snapping them back toward shelter at any threat. Clutch sizes in the genus are modest for a cichlid — commonly a few dozen to a couple of hundred eggs from a single small female — and no species-specific fecundity figure has been published for Apistogramma playayacu. Captive spawning of this fish is essentially unrecorded beyond that lone early note, a direct result of how rarely it reaches aquarists.
In the aquarium
Almost nothing is known first-hand about keeping this fish. The only pre-description account is Kästner's 2005 note on it under the trade name Apistogramma sp. "Caquetá", and since the 2011 description almost no husbandry reports have appeared in print or in the specialist forums. What follows is honest inference from the macmasteri complex plus the general Apistogramma literature — species-specific keeper experience is essentially absent.
Tank: a pair can live in roughly 15–20 US gal (about 31.5 in long), but a harem of one male and two or three females — the setup that best fits the species' probable social system — wants a footprint of at least 35.5–39.5 in so each female gets real territory. Use fine sand, ideally under a deep layer of dried leaf litter (beech, oak and Indian almond leaves all work), which both recreates the forest floor and lowers pH and hardness through slow tannin release. Dense planting, submerged wood and several cave-sized retreats — coconut half-shells, small clay pots, stacked slates — are functional rather than decorative: every female needs a defended cavity, and sightline breaks between them keep aggression manageable.
Water: soft and acidic. The values inferred from the upper Napo biotope and from macmasteri-complex relatives point to 73–81 °F, pH 5.0–6.5 and hardness well below 10 °dH — ideally 2–5 °dH for breeding attempts. Reverse-osmosis water cut with a little tap water, or soft rainwater conditioned with leaf litter and alder cones, reproduces this reliably. The fish is not thought to be fussier than comparable Apistogramma, but one of this background will not thrive — and almost certainly will not breed — in hard, alkaline tap water without serious treatment.
Tankmates: keep them unobtrusive. Small upper-water tetras (ember or rummy-nose) or small pencil-fishes that use a different depth zone are the usual companions for macmasteri-complex apistos, and there is no reason to differ here. Avoid anything big enough to threaten the cichlids, anything persistently active in mid-water that could stress a brooding female, and other cave-using cichlids. The male is assertive toward rival males and toward females outside of spawning, so a single-male setup is standard; two males in a normal tank will fight destructively.
Sexing and spawning: adults are easy to tell apart — males are visibly larger (about 20–25 percent longer than females at maturity), carry pointed, extended soft dorsal, anal and pelvic fins, and show a horizontal double spot on the caudal-fin base where females show a single, undivided spot; ripe females turn intensely yellow-black with a row of bold lateral blotches. Spawning should follow the macmasteri template: the female picks a cave, lays a small adhesive clutch on the ceiling, and tends the eggs and newly hatched larvae with little male help beyond territory defence. Rate difficulty as moderate to high — not because the husbandry principles are unfamiliar to seasoned Apistogramma keepers, but because so few records exist that there is no practical community knowledge of what this particular species needs or tolerates.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma playayacu as Data Deficient (assessed 26 October 2020 by H.R. Varella; the assessment was published in 2023). The reasoning is straightforward: the fish is known from only two localities in the Río Napo basin, its true distribution is poorly delimited and may reach protected land, and there is no information on its population size or trend — so no threat category can responsibly be assigned. It carries no CITES listing. The one threat the assessment names is collection for the aquarium trade, common to the whole genus, but it notes there is no information on the species' commercial value or harvest, and in practice this fish is barely in the hobby at all. Ecuador strictly restricts the export of its native wildlife, so the few aquarium specimens that exist have generally arrived indirectly or as contaminants — the trade name "Caquetá" itself records a 2004 accidental import among catfish — and the species has never established in the trade.
Set against its basin, the honest summary is that the data gap, not a documented decline, is the problem. The upper Napo lies in one of the more biodiverse and, for now, less heavily transformed corners of the western Amazon, and the potential range of Apistogramma playayacu may even reach the Reserva de Producción de Fauna Cuyabeno, which would offer some habitat protection. At the same time the wider Ecuadorian Amazon faces real and intensifying pressures — oil extraction and its spills, gold mining, deforestation and road-building — that bear on exactly the kind of small, shallow, forest-shaded streams this fish depends on. None of these is shown to threaten Apistogramma playayacu specifically, and it would be wrong to imply otherwise; but a narrow-range, low-profile endemic in a strained basin is just the sort of species for which "Data Deficient" should read as a call for fieldwork rather than a clean bill of health.
