Taxonomy & naming
Australoheros scitulus was described by Oldřich Říčan and Sven O. Kullander in 2003, originally as 'Cichlasoma' scitulum, in the journal Copeia (2003, no. 4: 794–802). The holotype (NRM 36647, in the Swedish Museum of Natural History) was collected in the Arroyo Colla, about 1640 ft upstream of its mouth into the Río Rosario, near Paso Arballo in Departamento Colonia, Uruguay (34°19'07"S, 59°20'13"W), within the Río de la Plata basin; a large paratype series is split between the Stockholm museum (NRM) and the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (MCP). The quotation marks around 'Cichlasoma' signalled that the fish did not belong in Cichlasoma proper — Kullander's 1983 revision had restricted that genus to a small core group and left the southern 'facetum group' without a valid generic home. Říčan and Kullander supplied one three years later: in 2006 they erected the genus Australoheros (type species Australoheros facetus) for the group, formally moving scitulum, facetus and tembe into it as the combination Australoheros scitulus. The genus has since exploded taxonomically — well over a dozen further species have been named from the Uruguay, Paraná, Iguazú and southern Atlantic drainages — but scitulus remains one of the three long-recognized founding members. Within the genus it is most readily compared with Australoheros facetus and Australoheros tembe, from which it is separated by its higher anal-fin spine count and its distinctive spotting. The genus belongs to the heroine cichlids (tribe Heroini) of subfamily Cichlinae, the New-World cichlid radiation.
Morphology
Australoheros scitulus is a small cichlid: FishBase lists a maximum of about 4.5 in standard length, and like most members of the genus it is short-bodied and laterally compressed, with the deep, rounded profile of a miniature 'cichlasomine'. Fin counts run to 16–18 dorsal-fin spines with 7–10 soft rays, 8–9 anal-fin spines with 6–8 soft rays, and 26–27 vertebrae. The most useful field mark is the spotting from which the species takes its name: black spots stipple the dorsal, anal and caudal fins, the gill cover (opercle), and the anterior flank scales, set against a body bearing a prominent dark midlateral stripe with the usual chanchito vertical bars rendered comparatively faint. Among the three originally described facetum-group species this spotting is diagnostic — Australoheros facetus and Australoheros tembe lack the crisply spotted fins and scales. The describers separated scitulus on a suite of counts as well: it has the highest anal-fin spine count of the three (8–9, versus 6–7 in facetus and 5–7 in tembe), 13–14 anal pterygiophores, modally 17 dorsal-fin spines, and modally six gill rakers on the first ceratobranchial. It further differs from facetus in having 14 (rather than 13) caudal vertebrae, and from tembe in a shorter caudal peduncle. Its jaw teeth lack the second cusp present in facetus. Pronounced sexual dimorphism has not been documented in the literature for this species; as in related Australoheros, mature males tend to grow somewhat larger and develop more produced soft-dorsal and anal-fin tips, while ripe females are deeper-bodied — but this is a genus-typical generalization rather than a measured account for scitulus specifically.
Habitat
The species is native to the temperate La Plata region of southern South America. The authoritative range, following the original description and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, covers the tributaries of the lower and middle Río Uruguay (in Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil) and the Río Rosario drainage in the Río de la Plata basin of southern Uruguay; the IUCN maps it across Argentina (Buenos Aires, Corrientes, Entre Ríos), Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul) and Uruguay, with an estimated extent of occurrence of about 331,249 mi². It is a fish of flowing fresh water rather than still ponds. The type series came from a large stream roughly 33 ft wide, mostly shallow (less than 3 ft deep), with a bottom of mixed rock, sand and gravel that produces riffles, the water slightly brownish and turbid. These are mineralized, near-neutral lowland and upland streams of the southern temperate zone, not the soft blackwater of the Amazon, and crucially they are seasonal: surface temperatures across this part of the Plata system swing widely through the year, from cool single-digit-to-low-teens °C winter lows to warm high-20s °C summers, so scitulus is adapted to genuinely temperate, cool-tolerant conditions rather than tropical stability — a defining trait of the southern Australoheros and their Gymnogeophagus and Crenicichla neighbours.
Feeding
Australoheros scitulus is a benthic forager with a pronounced taste for snails. Radiographs of preserved specimens by the describers revealed considerable quantities of small shells in the guts and intestines, and the fish backs this diet with the appropriate hardware: a stout, robust lower pharyngeal bone — the molariform throat-jaw that snail-crushing cichlids use to pulverize hard-shelled gastropods, exactly the convergent specialization seen in unrelated molluscivores such as Astatoreochromis in Africa. FishBase places the species at a trophic level near 3.2, consistent with a carnivorous bottom-feeder rather than a detritivore or herbivore. In the wild it works the rock-, sand- and gravel-floored riffles of its home streams, taking snails and presumably other small benthic invertebrates and whatever else the substrate yields; like its congeners it is best understood as an opportunistic invertivore that happens to be well equipped to exploit a mollusc resource many other fishes cannot.
Mating
The pre-spawning behaviour of Australoheros scitulus has not been described in detail in the primary literature, but the genus is uniformly composed of monogamous, pair-bonding substrate cichlids, and scitulus conforms to that pattern. As in the better-studied Australoheros facetus (the original 'chanchito'), a male and female form a bond, clear and clean a hard surface, and jointly hold a defended territory around the chosen spawning site; both sexes participate in territorial display and in driving off intruders. Pairs become markedly more aggressive and site-attached once they commit to a spawning bout. Outside of breeding the fish are less strongly territorial and can be found foraging over the stream bed. Because no scitulus-specific courtship study exists, the honest summary is that its mating system is inferred from close relatives: a typical heroine pair-spawning sequence of site preparation, mutual display and bonded defence.
Breeding
Australoheros scitulus is a biparental, open-substrate spawner — the classic chanchito reproductive mode. The pair lays adhesive eggs on a cleaned firm surface (a flat rock or similar) and both parents tend the brood: the female fans and cleans the eggs while the male defends the territory, and after the eggs hatch the pair guards the wrigglers and then the free-swimming fry, commonly shepherding them over the substrate and into pits. A species-specific clutch count has not been published for scitulus; the FishBase 'resilience' model assumes a fecundity under 1,000 eggs, and congeneric Australoheros (including Australoheros facetus) are documented laying clutches on the order of a few hundred to roughly a thousand eggs depending on female size — a reasonable genus-typical expectation here. As temperate-zone fish, southern Australoheros are seasonal breeders whose spawning is keyed to warming spring and summer water; a cool winter rest followed by rising temperature and longer days is the natural trigger, mirrored in aquaria by a seasonal cool-then-warm cycle with generous feeding. Parental care is biparental and extended by cichlid standards, with both parents escorting the fry until they disperse.
In the aquarium
Australoheros scitulus is an occasional guest in specialist cichlid collections — kept more often in Europe than North America, and more commonly misidentified as Australoheros facetus than correctly labelled — but it is worth seeking out on its own terms. It is a genuinely hardy, adaptable cichlid that forgives a good deal of husbandry imprecision, and its crisp spotting gives it more visual interest than the plain-sided 'chanchito' most hobbyists know. A pair can be housed comfortably in a 100-litre (roughly 26-US-gallon) tank, though larger is better if breeding is the goal and tank-mates are involved. The footprint matters more than depth; a long, low aquarium with plenty of horizontal swimming room suits the species' stream-bed lifestyle.
Water chemistry should reflect the fish's temperate, mineralized home streams. Target pH 6.5–7.8 with moderate hardness — medium-hard tap water is generally fine, and the species does not require soft or acid conditions. Temperature is the more unusual parameter: the natural range runs roughly 61–79 °F, and the fish benefits from a real seasonal swing rather than a locked tropical thermostat. A winter rest at 61–64 °F, achieved simply by letting the tank drift cooler in an unheated room or reducing the heater set-point, sharpens subsequent spawning responses and is more authentic to the fish's biology than permanent warmth. Summer temperatures up to 79–81 °F are tolerated without distress. Continuous temperatures above 82 °F should be avoided.
Substrate should be sand or fine gravel to allow the fish to root and sift without damaging its snout. Smooth, flat rocks are essential: the pair will choose one as a spawning slate and spend considerable time excavating beneath or around it. Caves, terracotta pots or broad-leafed plant bases serve as refuges. Robust, well-rooted plants (Vallisneria, Echinodorus, Sagittaria) can coexist with the species; unlike many New World cichlids it is not a habitual plant-shredder, though digging around the root base is inevitable. Good filtration with moderate flow and weekly partial water changes (25–30 %) are standard fare.
Tankmate selection demands careful thought. Australoheros scitulus is a territorial substrate cichlid and a devoted parent — when breeding, a bonded pair will ruthlessly drive fish out of the entire tank. Other cichlids of similar or smaller size risk serious harassment, and anything small enough to fit in the mouth is at risk from a guarding parent. Peaceful dithers such as larger subtropical tetras, Corydoras (sized appropriately), and robust livebearers can coexist outside of breeding phases, but the safest arrangement for spawning is a species-only or pair-only tank. The species is not especially aggressive outside of breeding and holds its own against fish of similar character.
The most common keeper mistake is keeping the fish at a permanently tropical 79–82 °F year-round: this shortens lifespan and suppresses spawning. A second common error is pairing: as with most substrate-spawning cichlids, compatibility is not guaranteed, and a mismatched pair can result in one fish being slowly killed. Condition both fish in sight of each other first, introduce them simultaneously into a rearranged tank, and watch closely for the first week. Because published scitulus-specific care accounts are sparse, the above draws on genus-typical Australoheros husbandry — principally the longer-kept Australoheros facetus — and should be understood as that rather than a species-specific primary-source account.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Australoheros scitulus as Least Concern (assessment by R.G. Frederico, published 2023, last assessed 4 November 2020). The rationale is essentially range-based: despite little information on its biology or population, the species occupies a wide area — an estimated extent of occurrence around 331,249 mi² across the tributaries of the lower and middle Uruguay River in Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil — so it does not approach any threatened threshold. The assessment records no known threats, no population estimate (trend listed as Unknown), and no species-specific conservation actions, and it has no CITES listing; it is of no fisheries interest and harmless to humans. That said, the wider La Plata basin faces real and accelerating pressures — agricultural runoff and eutrophication, damming and flow alteration, riparian clearing, and the steady conversion of the Pampas and southern-Brazilian grasslands — that bear on small stream-dwelling fishes generally. None of these is documented as a present danger to scitulus in particular, but they are the backdrop against which a data-poor, narrow-habitat species in an intensively farmed region should be read.
