Taxonomy & naming
Cichla nigromaculata was described in 1843 by Sir William Jardine, working from drawings and field notes prepared during Robert Schomburgk's Guiana expedition — the original spelling was the hyphenated Cychla nigro-maculata, since corrected. The epithet is straightforward Latin: niger (black) plus maculatus (spotted), for the small dark blotches scattered along the upper body. No type specimens are known to survive, which has made the name unusually contentious for almost two centuries.
That history matters because the fish has been repeatedly merged into other species and then pulled back out. Kullander (in Reis et al. 2003) treated nigromaculata as a synonym of Cichla monoculus; later molecular and morphological work (Willis et al. 2012; Sabaj et al. 2020) sank it instead under the type species Cichla ocellaris. The name survives as valid today chiefly on the strength of Kullander and Ferreira's 2006 revision of the genus (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 17: 289–398), which resurrected it on color-pattern and meristic grounds and remains the standard reference. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes currently lists it as valid as Cichla nigromaculata Jardine 1843, and FishBase carries the same authority as Jardine & Schomburgk, 1843. The genus name Cichla derives from the Greek kichle, an old word for wrasse. In the hobby and the sportfishing trade it is sometimes marketed as the "imperial" peacock bass, though common names across Cichla are notoriously loose.
Morphology
This is a small peacock bass by the genus's standards — the largest measured specimen in Kullander and Ferreira's revision was about 10 in standard length (FishBase records the maximum at 10.5 in SL, citing the same revision), roughly 10 in, well short of the half-meter-plus reached by relatives like Cichla temensis. The body is the typical Cichla form: elongate, laterally compressed, deep through the shoulder, fusiform and built for short explosive lunges rather than sustained pursuit.
Color runs dark for the genus — greenish-gold low on the flank shading to near-black along the back, often with a bluish sheen over the whole fish and bluish lower fins. Like all peacock basses it carries three primary vertical bars, but in nigromaculata these are relatively narrow and short, broadest over the dorsum and tapering to a point before reaching the belly; two fainter "intercalary" bars (1a and 2a) sit between them. A diagnostic dark blotch sits high in the third bar, and small black spots dot the upper body. Kullander and Ferreira separate it from look-alikes on hard characters rather than color alone: it has a higher lateral-scale count than Cichla ocellaris (about 75–84 versus 67–82 in the longitudinal E1 row), a discontinuous rather than continuous lateral line, a narrower caudal peduncle (depth 10.3–11.4 %SL versus 11.9–13.2 %SL), no postorbital markings, and a distinct occipital bar. From the superficially similar Cichla piquiti and Cichla intermedia it is told apart mainly by its lower scale counts (E1 75–84, versus 83–104 in piquiti and 96–108 in intermedia).
Habitat
Cichla nigromaculata occupies the upper Orinoco and its Casiquiare tributaries and the middle Rio Negro, with records spanning Venezuela and Brazil and a single georeferenced collection from Colombia. This is a biogeographically interesting address: the Casiquiare is the natural canal that connects the Orinoco to the Rio Negro (and so to the Amazon), and nigromaculata sits squarely on that link. Strictly, only its Rio Negro range falls inside the Amazon basin — the bulk of its distribution is upper-Orinoco — so it is best described as an Orinoco–Negro species that reaches the Amazon drainage rather than a true basin-wide Amazonian fish. FishBase classes it simply as a freshwater, benthopelagic, tropical fish, and no numeric depth range has been published for it; like other peacock basses it is a shallow-water predator of the upper few meters of channel and lagoon rather than a deep-water fish.
The habitat is some of the softest, most acidic freshwater on the planet. Winemiller and colleagues, sampling Cichla communities in the Rio Pasimoni and Rio Cinaruco of southern Venezuela, measured channel and lagoon pH between about 4.6 and 5.8, conductivity near 30 µS/cm, and hardness at or below detection — classic blackwater in the Pasimoni and tannin-poor clearwater in the Cinaruco, both warm at roughly 79–88°F (79–88 °F). Field reports from the same drainages place nigromaculata most often in floodplain lagoons that connect to and isolate from the main channel with the seasonal flood pulse, and only sporadically in flowing channel water — overlapping closely with Cichla monoculus and showing no obvious habitat partitioning from it.
Feeding
Like every peacock bass, Cichla nigromaculata is a piscivore — FishBase places it at a trophic level around 4.1, near the top of the local food web. The genus hunts as a lunging ambush predator from cover and structure, and dietary studies of co-occurring Cichla in these same Orinoco blackwaters (Winemiller et al. 1997) found stomachs dominated by characiform fishes, with smaller contributions from catfishes and other perciforms, and a high frequency of empty stomachs typical of sit-and-wait predators that eat large, infrequent meals.
No diet study targets nigromaculata specifically, so its menu is inferred from these congeners and from its size: a 10-inch predator takes proportionally smaller prey than the giant Cichla, meaning small characins, juvenile fishes, and likely shrimp. In the seasonally pulsed floodplain it lives in, prey availability swings hard between the flooded forest of high water and the shrinking, fish-packed lagoons of the dry season — and the lagoons are exactly where nigromaculata concentrates, which fits a predator that exploits prey trapped by falling water levels.
Mating
The wild reproductive biology of this particular species is essentially undocumented, but Cichla as a genus is consistent enough that the broad strokes are safe to state. Peacock basses pair off and defend a territory, and the run-up to spawning is conspicuous: hobbyists who have bred Cichla describe intense pre-spawn displays — body-slapping, gaping mouth-to-mouth challenges — as a pair forms and tests itself before committing. Warm water is the trigger, and spawns tend to follow large water changes and a temperature rise into the low-to-mid 80s°F (about 82–86 °F).
Dimorphism in Cichla is real but subtle: breeding males of the genus develop a nuchal hump on the forehead, and males tend to run larger than females, though for nigromaculata specifically the cue is best read from behavior and the swelling forehead of a ripe male rather than any single reliable field mark. All of this is congener and captive evidence; for nigromaculata itself it should be read as a well-supported expectation rather than a documented fact.
Breeding
Peacock basses are biparental substrate spawners, not mouthbrooders: a pair cleans a flat hard surface — a rock or submerged log — and lays an adhesive clutch on short stalks, then both parents guard the eggs and shepherd the free-swimming fry, fanning the eggs and excavating pits in which to shelter the young. Clutches are large, and both parents physically dig the wrigglers into the substrate and herd the resulting fry school. This places nigromaculata firmly among the open- and cavity-tending guarders, with no trace of the mouthbrooding seen in many African cichlids.
Much of the fine detail comes from the aquarium, where it agrees well with field observations: spawning on a flat rock, golden eggs on short stalks, biparental fanning, and parents that physically dig the wrigglers into the substrate. Reported clutch sizes run from several hundred to a few thousand eggs across the genus. For nigromaculata itself the specifics are undocumented, so the picture is assembled from congeners and captive Cichla; what is not in doubt is the reproductive mode — a guarding, fry-tending substrate spawner.
In the aquarium
Cichla nigromaculata is rare in the trade — most "peacock bass" sold are the larger, gaudier Cichla temensis, Cichla ocellaris-group fish, or the introduced Florida butterfly peacocks — and care advice has to be borrowed from the genus and scaled to this species' smaller adult size. It is still a serious-keeper fish, not a beginner cichlid: a fast-growing, food-driven predator that grows from a two-inch sliver into a stocky 10-inch adult quickly and unforgivingly.
The single biggest mistake keepers make is the live-feeder trap. Peacock basses arrive convinced that food is live fish, and aquarists who oblige run into the predictable disasters that recur in firsthand accounts: feeder-borne ich and other parasites wiping out a tank, fouled water from heavy feeding, and rampant intra-group cannibalism as the biggest fish swallow their smaller siblings. The durable hobby consensus is to pellet-train as early as possible, keep the fish in a group of several to diffuse aggression rather than a pair where one dominates, and never stock a wide size range together. Even for a 10-inch species, plan on a long tank measured in feet, not gallons alone — six feet of length is a sensible floor for an adult or small group. Water should mirror the wild: warm (high 70s to mid 80s°F / 77–86 °F), soft, and acidic to neutral, with strong filtration to handle a messy carnivore's bioload. Tankmates need to be robust, similarly sized, and too large to swallow; small or slow fish are simply prey.
Conservation
Cichla nigromaculata is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient (Frederico 2023; assessment last assessed 5 November 2020, published in the 2023 update). That is an honest verdict on how little is known: despite a probably wide range across the upper Orinoco, Casiquiare, and middle Rio Negro, there is essentially one georeferenced collection record, in Colombia, and no real information on population size, trend, or ecology. The assessors note it is taken locally as food and is prized in sportfishing, but flag that the actual impact of these pressures is simply not understood — hence Data Deficient rather than any threatened or Least Concern category. It is not listed by CITES (Not Evaluated), and it is not a narrow-range endemic so much as a poorly surveyed one.
The wider context is the Orinoco–Negro blackwater system rather than a single lake, and that system is, for now, in comparatively good shape. The upper Orinoco and Rio Negro drain sparsely populated, forested terrain, and their nutrient-poor, acidic waters have historically buffered them from the intensive development that strains larger basins. The Neotropical cichlid literature — Kullander's treatment in the Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (Reis, Kullander & Ferreira 2003) and the broader synthesis of Amazonian fish ecology after Lowe-McConnell — frames most fishes of these drainages as facing ornamental and food-fishery collection plus gradual habitat change (deforestation, mining-related sedimentation and mercury, and altered flood pulses) rather than imminent collapse. Like most Amazonian and Orinocan cichlids, then, nigromaculata is best described plainly: not currently known to be threatened, but genuinely under-studied, in a basin that is healthier than many yet not immune to the same regional pressures of land-use change and unregulated collection.
