Cichla intermedia, the royal peacock bass, is a large predatory cichlid endemic to the Orinoco River basin of Venezuela and Colombia. Unlike its more familiar congeners, it is a fish of fast, structured water — typically taken near submerged rock and timber in the main channels and rapids — and it wears a pattern found nowhere else in the genus: a row of dark blotches along the midline crossed by six or seven extra narrow vertical bars and, in adults, scattered black freckles behind the eye. Among the peacock basses it is the rheophilic specialist, a powerful diurnal piscivore prized by sport anglers and only rarely kept in aquaria.

Taxonomy & naming

The royal peacock bass was described by the Venezuelan ichthyologist Antonio Machado-Allison in 1971, in a revision of the Venezuelan species of Cichla, from material collected in the río Casiquiare of the Territorio Federal Amazonas (now Amazonas state), Venezuela. The holotype is lodged in the fish collection of the Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas under register MBUCV V-6489. Machado-Allison coined the epithet intermedia — Latin for 'intermediate' — because he read the new fish as morphologically intermediate between the two long-known Orinoco peacock basses, the slender blackwater giant Cichla temensis and the ocellated Cichla orinocensis. The genus Cichla Bloch & Schneider, 1801 is the sole member of its tribe, Cichlini, and the most basal lineage of the New World cichlid radiation (subfamily Cichlinae); for a long time peacock-bass taxonomy was a tangle of poorly defined names, and only five species were widely recognized until Sven O. Kullander and Efrem J. G. Ferreira's comprehensive 2006 review (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 17: 289–398) resurrected and described enough taxa to bring the total to fifteen. That study reaffirmed Cichla intermedia as a valid, well-marked species and restricted its range to the Casiquiare and Orinoco drainages. An older nominal name, Cychla nigro-maculata Jardine & Schomburgk, 1843 (from the Negro and Padauiri rivers, no types preserved), has been treated as a probable synonym of Cichla intermedia, though the absence of type material leaves the matter unresolved. The species is unambiguous in the field — no other Cichla shares its barred, blotched, spotless flank — so it has accumulated none of the synonymy that burdens the broadly distributed members of the genus.

Morphology

Cichla intermedia is a large, fusiform, powerfully built cichlid. FishBase gives a maximum of 21.5 in total length and a published weight of about 3 kg, while Kullander (2003) cites a maximum of 15 in standard length from examined museum material; like all peacock basses, wild-caught trophy fish run larger than the preserved specimens behind the formal figures, and a length around 19.5 in is a realistic adult size. The body is the classic peacock-bass shape — elongate, deep-chested, with a large mouth and a projecting lower jaw built for engulfing prey — and breeding males of the genus develop a fleshy nuchal hump on the forehead. Its colour pattern is the most reliable diagnostic in the whole genus. Juveniles carry a single uninterrupted dark band along the midline of the flank; with growth this band breaks up into a row of irregular dark blotches, and crossing it are six or seven narrow dark vertical bars below the dorsal fin (in the positions Kullander and Ferreira label 1, 1a, 2, 2a, 3, plus an extra bar under the rear of the soft dorsal and sometimes one on the caudal peduncle). It is this surplus of fine bars — more than any congener shows — that gives the 'royal' fish its regal striping. Adults also acquire a scatter of small black blotches behind the eye and on the gill cover. Critically, at every size Cichla intermedia lacks the iridescent light spots ('ocelli' and pearly flecks) that mark the flanks of most other Cichla, and the lateral line is almost always continuous (96–108 scales in the E1 row). The ground colour is a greenish to golden olive over a pale belly, with the dark markings standing out boldly; the signature caudal ocellus shared by the genus — a black eyespot ringed in gold at the tail base — is present. Sexual dimorphism follows the genus pattern: males grow larger and, in breeding condition, carry the pronounced nuchal hump, while ripe females are rounder-bodied; the sexes are otherwise similarly patterned.

Habitat

The royal peacock bass is an Orinoco-basin endemic, recorded from the Orinoco River and its tributaries and the Casiquiare River — the natural canal that links the Orinoco to the Rio Negro — in Venezuela, and crossing into the Orinoco drainage of Colombia. Within that range it is the most rheophilic, current-loving member of the genus. FishBase summarizes its biotope tersely: it is 'often captured near submerged rocks or woody structure in the primary river channel within or near swift current.' Where the broad-bodied Cichla orinocensis and the giant Cichla temensis favour the calmer water of lagoons, backwaters and flooded forest, Cichla intermedia keeps to the flowing main channels and the rocky rapids, hunting among boulders and sunken timber. It occupies both clearwater and blackwater rivers. The detailed field study by Jepsen, Winemiller and Taphorn (Copeia 1997), working in two southern Venezuelan rivers, captured the chemical range it tolerates: the blackwater Río Pasimoni ran strongly acidic and ion-poor (pH about 4.6–5.1, conductivity near 30 µmhos/cm, almost no measurable hardness or alkalinity, stained tea-brown, about 79 °F), while the clearer Río Cinaruco was mildly acidic and warmer (pH about 5.7–5.8, low conductivity, around 86–88 °F). These are soft, warm, lightly mineralized waters typical of the Guiana Shield, and the temperature band across its range runs roughly 75–88 °F. As a channel and rapids fish it occurs from the surface down through the moderately deep run-and-pool habitat of the main rivers rather than in still shallows.

Feeding

Cichla intermedia is a diurnal, visually hunting piscivore — FishBase places it at a high trophic level near 4.2 — that runs down and engulfs smaller fishes in open water and around structure. Its diet has been quantified directly: in the Jepsen, Winemiller and Taphorn (1997) study of stomach contents from southern Venezuela, characiform fishes (tetras and their relatives) dominated the prey of all three sympatric peacock basses, but Cichla intermedia stood apart in two ways. It took a markedly higher proportion of catfishes (siluriforms made up roughly 15 % of its identified prey, against essentially none for Cichla orinocensis), a difference its preferred habitat readily explains — the rocky, fast-water channels it hunts are exactly where armoured and other bottom catfishes shelter. And it took the smallest prey on average of the three (mean prey total length about 1.5 in), consistent with a fish that is itself the smaller-bodied of the Orinoco peacock basses. Like all Cichla it is an ambush-and-pursuit predator rather than a sit-and-wait one, using bursts of speed from cover; juveniles take small invertebrates and fish fry before graduating to a wholly fish diet. In the river community it is a top-tier predator of the channel and rapids zone, partitioning the prey base from its larger relatives by habitat and prey type rather than competing head-to-head.

Mating

As in the rest of the genus, the royal peacock bass forms monogamous pairs that bond for the duration of a breeding cycle and cooperate to defend a territory and brood. Detailed courtship has not been described specifically for Cichla intermedia in the wild, but Cichla biology is consistent across the genus: with the onset of breeding condition the male develops the swollen nuchal hump on the nape, the pair selects and cleans a hard spawning surface, and both fish become intensely territorial, driving off intruders — including other peacock basses and any fish that ventures near the nest site. Pairing in peacock basses is a test of strength and compatibility; the fish are large, fast and aggressive, and an ill-matched pair will fight rather than spawn. Breeding in Cichla is broadly seasonal, generally tied in the Orinoco to the falling-water and low-water period when prey is concentrated and clear, defensible nest sites in shallower margins become available. FishBase records the size at first maturity for Cichla intermedia beginning around 11 in, so these are large fish before they reproduce.

Breeding

Cichla intermedia is a biparental substrate (open) spawner with strong, shared parental care — the reproductive mode of the entire genus. The pair cleans a firm surface (a rock, a sunken log, or cleared hard substrate) and the female deposits adhesive eggs on it in a flat plaque; both parents then guard and fan the clutch and, after the larvae hatch, shepherd the wriggler mass and later the free-swimming fry as a dense, mobile school. Cichla are notably fecund — large females of the genus can release several thousand eggs in a spawning, and totals of two to three thousand are commonly reported for the more frequently bred species, with much larger counts on record — though a clutch size specific to Cichla intermedia has not been published; the figures here are genus-typical. Parental care is prolonged and vigorous by cichlid standards: the parents escort the school for weeks, the fry diving back toward the guarding adults at any threat, and the brood is defended against all comers until the young disperse. The species itself is seldom bred in captivity — it is uncommon in the trade and demanding to keep — but its congeners spawn readily once a true pair settles, hatching in roughly three days at tropical temperatures and reaching free-swimming a few days after, which gives a reliable picture of how the royal peacock bass reproduces in the wild.

In the aquarium

The royal peacock bass is a specialist's fish, not a community subject, and it reaches the hobby far less often than the popular butterfly (Cichla orinocensis) or speckled (Cichla temensis) peacock basses. Everything about keeping it follows from two facts: it grows large — realistically around 15.5–19.5 in — and it is a powerful, current-loving open-water predator. The tank must be very large. A single adult needs a footprint measured in the order of two metres or more and a volume well into the hundreds of gallons (a 180-gallon / ~680-litre aquarium is a sensible minimum for one fish, and more for any grouping), with a tight-fitting lid, because startled peacock basses jump hard.

Water should mirror the warm, soft, lightly mineralized rivers of the Orinoco: temperature about 79–86 °F, pH on the acidic-to-neutral side (roughly 5.5–7.5, with the lower half of that range closest to nature), and low to moderate hardness. This species in particular comes from flowing channel water, so unlike its lagoon-dwelling relatives it appreciates real current — strong, well-oxygenated filtration that turns the tank over briskly suits it, as do scattered large rocks and heavy driftwood that recreate the submerged structure it hunts around. As a big, messy carnivore it produces a heavy bioload; over-filtration (a large canister or a sump) and generous, frequent water changes are essential to control dissolved waste, to which Cichla are sensitive.

Feeding is straightforward in principle: this is an obligate piscivore that is best grown on a varied carnivore diet of meaty frozen and prepared foods — and, importantly, weaned onto good-quality sinking or floating pellets for nutritional completeness. Live feeder fish are widely discouraged, both because they risk introducing disease and parasites and because a sole diet of fatty feeders leads to poor health; whole frozen fish, shrimp and prawn, earthworms and large carnivore pellets are the staples experienced keepers rely on. The fish learns to take prepared food readily.

Tankmates are the hard part. A royal peacock bass will eat anything it can swallow, so companions must be too large to be prey but not so aggressive as to bully it; robust, similarly sized South American fishes — large catfishes (such as the bigger Pseudoplatystoma or Phractocephalus, space permitting), large Geophagus-type eartheaters, big characins, and other large cichlids — are the usual choices, always in a tank big enough to dilute aggression. Conspecifics are risky outside of a very large system, and breeding pairs become extremely territorial. The common mistakes are predictable: housing it in a tank far too small, underestimating the filtration and water-change burden, relying on live feeders, and pairing it with anything bite-sized. Kept properly it is a magnificent, intelligent, interactive fish, but it is firmly an advanced-keeper species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Cichla intermedia as Least Concern, in an assessment by Lina Mesa-Salazar carried out on 28 October 2020 and published in 2022. The listing reflects a species spread across the large Orinoco and Casiquiare drainage with no evidence of a population-level threat; the population trend is recorded as unknown. It carries no CITES or CMS listing. The royal peacock bass is a valued sport and food fish within its range, and like all peacock basses it is sought by recreational anglers, but it has not been flagged as overexploited. Notably, and unlike several of its congeners, Cichla intermedia is not known to have established invasive populations outside its native basin — the global problem of introduced peacock basses (in Florida, Hawaii, Singapore, Panama and elsewhere) is driven chiefly by Cichla ocellaris, Cichla kelberi and Cichla temensis, not by this rheophilic channel specialist, whose narrower habitat requirements likely limit its spread. The broad threats to Orinoco-basin fishes — deforestation, gold-mining and the mercury contamination it brings, damming, and changes to the flood-pulse and flow regimes that structure river habitats — form the backdrop against which its long-term status should be watched, but none is documented as a present danger to this particular species.
