Taxonomy & naming
Coptodon sp. "Mamfé" is not a formally described species. It has no scientific name, no describing author, no year of publication, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, because no taxonomist has published a description of it. It is an informal taxon, named in the standard convention for undescribed tilapias — the genus Coptodon, the abbreviation "sp.", and a locality name in quotation marks taken from Mamfé, the town on the upper Cross River where it is collected. The genus Coptodon holds the substrate-spawning tilapias formerly lumped in 'Tilapia' sensu lato, separated out by Dunz & Schliewen (2013) on molecular and morphological grounds; the Cross River and its tributaries in Cameroon and Nigeria are a centre of Coptodon diversity, home to species such as Coptodon camerunensis and the Lake Ejagham endemics Coptodon deckerti, Coptodon ejagham, and Coptodon fusiforme. The Mamfé fish is a riverine Coptodon of the upper Cross (Manyu) drainage, geographically and phylogenetically near the Cross River Coptodon assemblage that seeded the Ejagham crater-lake flock — it is referenced in studies of that radiation as a Cross-River outgroup/source population. Whether it is best read as an undescribed species or a distinct riverine population of a described Cross River Coptodon is unresolved; no authority or date should be attached to it. (Its affinity to described Cross River Coptodon is inferred from morphology, provenance, and the published phylogenetic context.)
Morphology
In build this is a typical Coptodon: a robust, moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed tilapia with the heavy head, terminal mouth, and long spinous dorsal of the substrate-spawning tilapias. Hobby accounts put its adult size in the region of 7.1–7.9 in (around 8 inches), in line with the medium-sized Cross River Coptodon. Trade descriptions report a silvery to greenish ground colour, frequently with a dark or blackened throat and belly — a breeding/dominance expression — and the vertical barring and dark flank blotches characteristic of the genus, which can flush in and out with mood. The unpaired fins may carry rows of pale spotting, as in many Coptodon. Sexual dimorphism follows the tilapia pattern: males grow larger, develop heavier head and nuchal profiles and stronger nuptial coloration (including the dark throat/belly), while ripe females are rounder-bodied; both sexes intensify in pattern around breeding. Because the form is undescribed, no formal meristic diagnosis separates it from its Cross River congeners; it is recognised by provenance and overall appearance.
Habitat
The Mamfé tilapia comes from the upper Cross River basin in the Manyu Division of Cameroon's Southwest Region, around the town of Mamfé — the drainage that also feeds, a short distance away, the isolated crater Lake Ejagham with its small endemic cichlid flock. This is a warm, lowland-to-foothill tropical river system of the Cross River–Korup rainforest belt, with the soft to moderately mineralised, near-neutral to slightly acidic waters typical of West-Central African forest rivers. As a riverine Coptodon, the fish occupies the kind of vegetated margins, slower channels, and backwaters that the genus favours, where it can browse plant material and find substrate for spawning. The wider Cross River basin is a recognised centre of endemism for African freshwater fishes, and the Mamfé reach specifically is significant as the riverine source area for the Ejagham crater-lake radiation.
Feeding
Coptodon are omnivorous tilapias with a strong herbivorous and detritivorous leaning, and the Mamfé form is no exception. Trade and hobby accounts report that it takes vegetable matter readily and will eat duckweed and other plant material, in keeping with the genus's diet of algae, aquatic and overhanging vegetation, plant detritus, and associated small invertebrates. Coptodon sit at a relatively low trophic level for cichlids, reflecting that plant-and-detritus bias. There is nothing predatory about its feeding mode; it is a robust browser and grazer rather than a hunter of other fishes. In the aquarium this translates directly into a need for a vegetable-forward diet, as set out below.
Mating
Coptodon are biparental, substrate-spawning tilapias — the key behavioural contrast with the maternal-mouthbrooding tilapias (Oreochromis, Sarotherodon) — and the Mamfé form follows that pattern. A male and female form a pair, select and clean a spawning site on the substrate, and defend a territory around it together. Courtship is the standard tilapia repertoire of lateral displays, fin-spreading, jaw contact, and cooperative substrate-cleaning, with the male's heightened nuptial coloration (the darkened throat and belly especially) serving as the principal signal. Spawning pairs become territorial and can be aggressive around the nest, as is usual for substrate-spawning tilapias, while outside of breeding the fish is a robust but not exceptionally belligerent community member of its size class.
Breeding
Coptodon sp. "Mamfé" is a biparental substrate spawner, in the standard Coptodon manner. The adhesive eggs are laid on a cleaned hard surface or in a depression in the substrate and tended by both parents — the female concentrating on fanning and direct egg-care, the male on perimeter defence, with the roles overlapping. After hatching, the wrigglers are moved to pits and guarded; once free-swimming, the fry are herded and defended as a school by both parents, the hallmark of substrate-spawning tilapia parental care. Clutch sizes in medium Coptodon run to several hundred eggs in well-grown pairs, and the same Cross River Coptodon lineage that seeded Lake Ejagham produces comparable broods; precise figures are not separately published for this form. Parental care is extended across eggs, larvae, and free-swimming fry, and conditioned pairs re-spawn at intervals. In the aquarium
The Mamfé tilapia is an uncommon aquarium fish, appearing in the hobby mainly through specialist West-African-cichlid keepers and the occasional auction listing of wild-line stock. It is kept as one would keep any robust, medium-sized substrate-spawning Coptodon.
Give it a tank with a generous footprint — on the order of 47.2 in length and a good volume for an adult or pair, more for a group from which a pair is allowed to form. Furnish it as a West-African river: a sand or fine-gravel substrate, driftwood and rock structure to break sightlines and provide territory markers and spawning surfaces, and warm, near-neutral water. Temperatures in the mid-to-high 20s Celsius (roughly 75–82 °F) and a pH around neutral (about 6.5–7.5) suit its Cross River origins. Robust filtration and regular water changes are advisable for a messy, plant-eating tilapia. Note that, as a hardy and adaptable tilapia, it should never be released into the wild outside its native range, where Coptodon can become invasive.
Feed a vegetable-forward omnivore diet: a quality cichlid or herbivore pellet as the staple, generously supplemented with blanched greens, spirulina, duckweed, and other plant matter, plus periodic frozen or live invertebrates for protein. Expect it to graze soft plants. For tankmates, choose robust companions of similar size and temperament — other West African cichlids, larger characins, and well-armoured catfish — and be prepared to give a breeding pair its own space, since territorial aggression sharpens around the nest. The common keeper mistakes are underestimating its adult size, under-filtering a vegetable-heavy feeder, and crowding a spawning pair so it cannot hold a territory.
Conservation
Coptodon sp. "Mamfé" has not been evaluated by the IUCN, and because it is an undescribed form without a formal scientific name it has no Red List assessment of any kind — no status, no category, no published criteria. As a riverine Coptodon of the wide Cross River basin, it is not a single-locality crater-lake endemic like the threatened Ejagham species (several of which are formally assessed as at risk owing to their tiny lake), but the upper Cross River and the Korup–Mamfé region face the general pressures common to West-Central African forest rivers: deforestation, agriculture and associated sedimentation and pollution, and fishing. None is documented as a population-level threat to this particular form. No conservation status should ever be fabricated for it; the honest statement is that it is unassessed and, as part of a riverine Cross River lineage rather than a micro-endemic, not currently considered at obvious risk — while the narrowly endemic Ejagham crater-lake Coptodon it is related to are a separate and more vulnerable case.
