Coptodon walteri is a medium-sized West African tilapia of the forest rivers straddling the Côte d'Ivoire–Liberia border, a pair-bonding substrate spawner that digs deep nest pits in the river bed. Mainly a plant-eater, it is one of the substrate-spawning 'Tilapia' moved into the resurrected genus Coptodon — and, unusually for a tilapia, it is an Endangered species, its narrow range squeezed by fishing and habitat loss.

Name history

Taxonomy & naming

The species was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Dirk Thys van den Audenaerde in 1968, as Tilapia walteri, in the Revue de Zoologie et de Botanique Africaines (v. 78). The holotype (MRAC 155632) and an extensive paratype series are held in the Royal Museum for Central Africa at Tervuren; the type locality is the Cavally River, the forest river that for much of its length forms the border between Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia. The epithet honours Professor Dr Walter Norbert Verheyen (1932–2005), a Belgian zoologist and mammalogist at the University of Antwerp — an eponym, not a descriptive name.

Like the rest of its group, walteri spent decades parked in the sprawling, unnatural genus Tilapia. The molecular phylogeny of Dunz and Schliewen (2013, Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution 68) dismantled that catch-all, and they placed the substrate-spawning West and Central African tilapias in a resurrected Coptodon Gervais, 1853. Tilapia walteri became Coptodon walteri, the combination now used by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and FishBase. One point worth flagging for anyone searching the literature: the epithet 'walteri' also attaches to an entirely unrelated Lake Tanganyika cichlid, Neolamprologus walteri — a different genus, a different lake, a different fish. The two share only a name.

Morphology

Coptodon walteri is a moderately large tilapia, reaching about 10.5 in in total length (FishBase) — one of the bigger species in the genus. It has the standard Coptodon form: a deep, laterally compressed body, a single long-based dorsal fin, and the genus's characteristic lower pharyngeal jaw, which is roughly as long as broad with the anterior lamella shorter than the toothed area and with median pharyngeal teeth that are not broadened. The published counts are 15–16 dorsal spines and 12–14 soft dorsal rays (FishBase gives 12–13 in the meristic header), three anal spines and 9–10 anal soft rays, with 9–13 lower gill-rakers.

The most useful field mark is the caudal fin: in walteri the upper part of the tail is a distinct yellow-orange and the lower part greyish, a two-toned pattern that helps separate it from sympatric and similar congeners. As in other Coptodon, the body carries the genus's vertical barring rather than horizontal stripes. Documented coloration otherwise follows the tilapiine norm — an olive-to-silvery ground that intensifies in breeding fish — but detailed accounts of sexual dichromatism are limited; the species is sexed in the field mainly on the usual cichlid cues of relative size and breeding condition rather than on a fixed colour difference.

Habitat

This is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of West African forest rivers. FishBase gives its range as the Cavally and Nipoué (= Cess) rivers of Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia, with additional records from the upper St. John River in Liberia — a compact distribution between about 5° and 8° N. Recorded water temperatures sit around 75–79 °F, the warm, stable regime of lowland and foothill rainforest streams. These are the rivers of the Upper Guinean forest block, a region of high freshwater endemism, and walteri's range falls within the Eburneo or related freshwater ecoregions of that block (FEOW).

Its confinement to a handful of border rivers makes it a genuinely narrow-range species, and that small distribution is central to its conservation story. The Upper Guinean forest rivers have been heavily affected by deforestation, agriculture, mining and the artisanal fishing that targets larger riverine cichlids, so the fish occupies exactly the kind of restricted, pressured habitat in which a localised tilapia can decline quickly. Precise notes on its preferred microhabitat — substrate, current, depth — are sparse in the accessible literature, but as a pit-digging substrate spawner it depends on workable river-bed sediment in which to nest.

Feeding

Coptodon walteri is described as mainly herbivorous, taking the bulk of its diet from plant material but also eating small amounts of insects (FishBase, after Dunz & Schliewen's 2010 Tilapia revision). Its estimated trophic level is low (about 2.5), consistent with a diet dominated by vegetation, algae and detritus rather than animal prey. This places it squarely in the ecological mainstream of the genus: Coptodon are by and large macrophyte- and algae-grazers, the group to which the well-known plant-eating Coptodon rendalli and Coptodon zillii belong, and which differ in this from the more omnivorous or planktivorous mouthbrooding tilapias. In a forest river, a fish of this feeding mode would work over submerged plants, the algal film on rocks and woody debris, and the soft sediments where detritus collects, taking incidental invertebrates along with the plant matter. The quantitative detail of its diet has not been published, but the herbivore-leaning characterisation is well established for the species.

Mating

Coptodon walteri is a pair-bonding, biparental substrate spawner — a monogamous-pairing cichlid rather than a polygamous mouthbrooder. FishBase, drawing on Dunz and Schliewen's account, describes it specifically as an open-substrate spawner that 'builds large, deep pits on the river bottom,' which is among the more concrete behavioural notes available for any West African Coptodon. A male and female form a bonded pair, jointly excavate and defend a nest pit dug into the river bed, and hold a territory around it through the breeding cycle. The excavation of a substantial pit is both a courtship and a practical act: it produces the cleared, defensible depression in which the eggs are laid and the young are later sheltered. Beyond the pit-digging, the fine detail of courtship display and pair formation is not separately documented, but the species clearly follows the bonded-pair, shared-territory model typical of substrate-spawning tilapias.

Breeding

Reproduction is biparental substrate spawning. The pair digs a large, deep pit in the river bottom, the adhesive eggs are laid on the cleaned substrate within the nest, and both parents guard the brood — fanning the eggs, tending the wrigglers and shepherding the free-swimming fry. This is the classic Coptodon reproductive package, and walteri is one of the species for which the pit-nesting habit is explicitly recorded rather than merely inferred. Quantitative breeding data — clutch size, egg dimensions, the timing of the spawning season, the rate of fry development — have not been published for the species, so those specifics remain unknown. What is documented and reliable is the mode: an open-substrate, pit-building biparental spawner with extended joint parental care, as opposed to the mouthbrooding strategy of the food-fish tilapias. There are no aquarium breeding reports to supplement the wild picture.

In the aquarium

Coptodon walteri is barely present in the aquarium hobby. It is not a regular trade species, has no aquarium-strain history, and is best regarded as a wild, range-restricted river fish rather than a hobby cichlid; its Endangered status is a further reason it does not — and arguably should not — circulate in the trade. There is no established body of keeper experience for it, so what follows is general inference from its biology rather than tested husbandry.

A fish like this would demand a large tank. At around 10.5 in and with a pit-digging, territory-holding temperament, it is a big, substrate-moving cichlid that would need a long footprint, a deep bed of sand it could excavate, robust filtration to cope with the constant digging, and warm water in the mid-to-high 20s Celsius to match its forest-river origins. Its herbivorous leaning would call for a vegetable-rich diet — quality plant-based pellets, blanched greens, algae — rather than a meat-heavy one. As a substrate spawner it would become territorial and earth-moving around breeding, so tankmates would need to be chosen for size and resilience. But all of this is extrapolation: the practical reality is that walteri is an Endangered wild endemic, not an aquarium subject, and it carries no real hobby track record.

Conservation

Coptodon walteri is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Endangered (criteria B2ab(i,ii,iii)), assessed on 19 August 2019. That is a striking status for a tilapia — a group more often associated with invasive, pond-farmed abundance than with extinction risk — and it follows directly from the fish's biology: a species confined to a small number of forest rivers on the Côte d'Ivoire–Liberia border, with a limited area of occupancy, facing continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat. The B2ab criteria point to a restricted range that is both fragmented and shrinking. The pressures are the familiar ones bearing on Upper Guinean forest rivers — deforestation, agricultural expansion, mining and the siltation and flow changes they bring — compounded by fishing on the larger riverine cichlids; an earlier 'Threatened fishes of the world' treatment had flagged the species as Near Threatened on similar grounds before the formal Endangered listing. It carries no CITES listing, and FishBase records it as of no fishery interest at the commercial scale, but the combination of a tiny range and degrading habitat is exactly what places it among the genuinely threatened African cichlids.
