Taxonomy & naming
Crenicichla hadrostigma was described in 2007 by the Brazilian ichthyologist Carlos A. S. de Lucena, of the Museu de Ciências e Tecnologia at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, in a paper that introduced two new pikes from the upper rio Uruguay (the other being Crenicichla empheres). The holotype is an adult male of 4 in standard length, MCP 40959, collected from the rio Chapecó near Coronel de Freitas in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina on 23 January 2006; more than thirty paratypes from the rio Chapecó and the upper rio Uruguay accompany it. Crenicichla is the most species-rich cichlid genus, with on the order of a hundred valid species across cis-Andean South America, and to manage that diversity it has long been split into informal species-groups. Lucena placed hadrostigma in the Crenicichla missioneira species group, an assemblage endemic to the middle and upper rio Uruguay that also contains Crenicichla missioneira, Crenicichla minuano, Crenicichla tendybaguassu, Crenicichla igara, Crenicichla jurubi and the later-added Crenicichla empheres. The group is diagnosed by a smooth preopercular margin, a reduced or absent suborbital stripe, no humeral spot, and an ocellated caudal spot. Older hobby and database treatments sometimes file the species under a subgenus 'Lacustria,' but the species-group framework of Lucena and Kullander is the one used in the primary literature. The fishes of this drainage are known locally by the vernacular names Joaninha and Michola.
Morphology
This is a small pike cichlid by the standards of a genus that includes giants: the type series spans roughly 3–4.5 in standard length, and FishBase lists a maximum of about 4.5 in SL. The body is relatively deep for a Crenicichla (body depth about 22–27% of standard length), with the elongate, cylindrical build typical of the genus, a short and bluntly rounded snout, and isognathous jaws — the lower jaw does not project beyond the upper. The single feature that separates it at a glance from every other pike is the one Lucena named it for: a conspicuous, eye-ringed (ocellated) black blotch in the post-temporal region behind the head, always larger than half the eye's diameter and often as large as or larger than the eye itself. There is no humeral spot and no dark lateral band along the flank, and an ocellated spot sits at the base of the tail in both sexes. Live colour is understated but handsome: males are grayish with eleven to sixteen narrow dark vertical bars (single or paired) down the sides, scattered dark spots on the caudal peduncle, and yellow dorsal, anal, caudal and pelvic fins peppered with rows of black spots. Females show nine or ten darker bars alternating with pale areas, a red bar in the spinous dorsal fin, a red or orange streak running back from the pectoral base, and frequently a black ocellated spot among the rear dorsal spines — a typical Crenicichla female badge. The post-temporal spot and any anterior ocellus are ringed in yellow. Sexual dimorphism is therefore clear in the fins and bar pattern.
Habitat
Crenicichla hadrostigma is restricted to the upper rio Uruguay drainage. The type material comes from the rio Chapecó and from the rio Uruguay itself at localities such as Itapiranga and Barra do Guarita, spanning the Brazilian states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul; in 2020 a specimen was documented from the rio Uruguay in Misiones, Argentina, extending the known range across the border. This is the cradle of the Crenicichla missioneira species flock, a set of closely related pikes that — unusually for river fishes — radiated within one river system rather than across separate basins, so that several species live side by side along the same stretch of shoreline. Their shared habitat is shallow, clear, fast-flowing water over beds of rock and rock slabs; sites in this part of the Uruguay basin are characteristically rocky rapids with abundant slab and crevice structure, the kind of rheophilic (current-loving) setting in which the flock's various feeding specialists partition the resources. No formal in-situ chemistry has been published for this species specifically, but these are warm, well-oxygenated, moderately soft subtropical rivers; the relevant aquarium ranges are discussed below. The depth band the fish occupies is the shallow rocky margin of the river, on the order of a few metres at most.
Feeding
Crenicichla hadrostigma is a molluscivore — a snail-eater — which is unusual among pike cichlids and is one of the parallel feeding specialisms that define the Uruguay River flock. The evidence comes straight from the original description: examined stomachs contained mollusk shells, and one fish held only snails, while a single other specimen had eaten aquatic insect larvae. Its lower pharyngeal tooth plate is stout and dorsoventrally flattened, bearing strong, enlarged (though not fully molar-shaped) crushing teeth — the dentition of a fish built to crack shells. Lucena noted that this puts hadrostigma close to Crenicichla jurubi, which has frankly molariform teeth and the same near-exclusive snail diet, and suggested the two represent points along a gradient of molluscivory within the missioneira group. In the wider community ecology worked out for these pikes, the molluscivore ecomorph (a guild that also includes Crenicichla minuano) is characterised by a stout head, isognathous jaws and robust pharyngeal mill, and it forages over the same rocky shallows as the flock's crevice-feeders, periphyton-grazers and piscivores. Crenicichla hadrostigma is itself prey for larger predators: one of the type specimens was recovered from the stomach of a dorado, Salminus brasiliensis.
Mating
No courtship or pair-formation behaviour has been described for Crenicichla hadrostigma in the wild or in captivity, and the original description is a taxonomic work that does not treat reproduction. What can be said rests on the marked sexual dichromatism documented in the type series and on the consistent reproductive biology of the genus. Like other pike cichlids, Crenicichla hadrostigma is almost certainly a monogamous, pair-bonding species in which a male and female form a lasting partnership and jointly hold a territory. The bright female signal — the red dorsal bar, the orange flank streak and the ocellated spot in the rear of the dorsal fin — is the kind of ripe-female advertising seen across Crenicichla, used in pair formation and in soliciting the male. Territoriality centred on a sheltered rocky site is the expected pre-spawning behaviour. Beyond these genus-level inferences, the specifics of its mating remain undocumented.
Breeding
The breeding of Crenicichla hadrostigma has not been described in the wild, and it is at most rarely spawned in aquaria, so its reproductive details are inferred from the consistent pattern across the genus. Pike cichlids are biparental substrate and cave spawners: a pair cleans a concealed surface — the roof or wall of a rock crevice, a cave, or an overhang — and the female attaches the eggs there while the male guards the territory around it. Both parents then tend the eggs and the resulting wrigglers and free-swimming fry, the female generally staying closest to the brood and the male patrolling the perimeter. Clutch size has not been reported for this species; congeneric pikes of comparable size typically lay on the order of one hundred to a few hundred eggs (a genus-typical figure, not a measured one for hadrostigma). Given its rocky-rapids habitat, a sheltered crevice among slabs is the likely natural nest site. Fry development and spawning triggers for this particular species are unrecorded.
In the aquarium
Crenicichla hadrostigma is a rarity in the hobby. It has occasionally reached aquarists — photographs of living fish kept in Argentina exist, and it has been collected alongside other Uruguay-basin pikes for export — but it is not a regularly traded or commercially bred species, and there is no established body of captive-husbandry experience to draw on. Anyone keeping it is essentially working from genus knowledge and from what its wild habitat implies.
That habitat points clearly to the right setup: this is a fish of warm, clear, well-oxygenated, current-swept rocky shallows, not a sluggish blackwater pike. A tank for a pair should be generous in footprint rather than tall — roughly 47 in of length or more — with a sand or fine-gravel base, plenty of rounded rock and slab structure arranged into caves and crevices, and brisk filtration that delivers real flow and high oxygen levels. Subtropical water suits it: a temperature around 72–82 °F, a near-neutral pH in the range of about 6.0–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Because it comes from rivers with a cooler subtropical winter, it should not be kept permanently at high tropical temperatures.
Diet is the one area where this species differs from a typical predatory pike: it is a snail-crusher, not primarily a fish-eater. It should be offered hard-shelled and invertebrate foods — small snails, frozen and live shrimp and other crustaceans, bloodworm and similar — that exercise its pharyngeal mill, rather than a fish-based feeder diet. As with all Crenicichla, expect strong intraspecific and territorial aggression, especially around breeding; tankmates should be robust, similarly sized, and given room to escape, and a single well-matched pair in a large, structured tank is the sensible unit. None of this has been validated by long-term captive records for the species itself, so it is best treated as a fish for an experienced keeper prepared to manage a wild, little-known pike.
Conservation
Crenicichla hadrostigma is assessed on the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable (VU), under criterion B1ab(ii,iii), in an assessment carried out on 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) and published in 2022. The listing reflects a small, fragmented range confined to the upper and middle rio Uruguay and its tributary the rio Chapecó. The dominant threat is hydropower. This is a rheophilic species that depends on free-flowing, rocky, fast-water habitat, yet its range lies within a stretch of the Uruguay basin slated for intensive damming — on the order of dozens of hydroelectric projects already installed, under construction or in prospecting, with plants such as Passo São João, Monjolinho, Foz do Chapecó and Itapiranga directly within or beside its recorded distribution. Dams convert the rapids it needs into still reservoirs and sever the river into isolated segments, so the foreseeable effect is both habitat loss and severe population fragmentation — exactly the pressures the IUCN criteria flag. As a narrow-range endemic of a single, heavily developed river system, it is far more exposed than the basin's widespread generalist fishes, and its fate is tied closely to how much of the upper rio Uruguay is left flowing.
