Taxonomy & naming
The Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner described this pike cichlid in 1911 as Crenicichla cametana, in the Anzeiger der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien, from specimens taken in the Rio Tocantins at Cametá in the Brazilian state of Pará — the town whose name the species carries. The original series long sat without a fixed name-bearer until Alex Ploeg, in his 1986 Beaufortia revision of the Tocantins Crenicichla, designated a lectotype (NMW 32816 in the Vienna museum) and a paralectotype (NMW 32815); the same paper restricted other Tocantins type localities and tidied the genus's synonymy, folding a fourth species Ploeg had originally described, C. astroblepa, into cametana's synonymy after further collections showed the two overlapped in every character once growth-related changes in body proportion were accounted for. Notably, when Ploeg's team worked through a large modern INPA collection from the Tocantins they recovered nine Crenicichla species but never the tenth, Crenicichla cametana — it was included in the revision on the strength of its types alone, a hint of how localized and uncommon the fish already was. The name has stood as valid through Ploeg's 1991 monograph, Kullander's 2003 checklist treatment, and the 2023 integrative revision by Varella and colleagues.
Within the genus, its exact placement has shifted with successive revisions. Ploeg's own 1991 monographic treatment grouped Crenicichla cametana, together with the small rheophile C. cyclostoma, in the small-toothed 'C. reticulata' group — once split off as its own genus, Batrachops Heckel, 1840, on the strength of its members' comparatively few tooth rows — while placing its lookalike relative C. jegui in a separate assemblage of large-bodied Crenicichla allied to C. lugubris, despite the two species otherwise sharing a rare, dorsally compressed body form found in no other Tocantins Crenicichla. The more recent integrative revision by Varella and colleagues (2023, Crenicichlina, tribe Geophagini) proposes breaking the sprawling genus Crenicichla apart into several resurrected and new genera, including Lugubria for the lugubris-allied lineage; given Ploeg's placement of cametana with the reticulata/Batrachops assemblage rather than with lugubris, it is not established that cametana falls within that particular split. Major databases including Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and FishBase continue to list it as Crenicichla cametana, the combination used here.
Morphology
Crenicichla cametana has the elongate body that gives the genus its English name: a long head with a deeply cleft, well-toothed jaw, eyes set well forward, and the dorsal and anal fins running far back toward a rounded tail, all built for the lunging ambush of a sit-and-wait predator. Unlike the laterally compressed body of small rheophilic relatives such as C. cyclostoma and C. compressiceps, its anterior body — like that of its close relative C. jegui — is dorsally compressed: flatter top-to-bottom and broader than deep, an adaptation shared by the two species and linked to their shared bottom-hugging, current-resistant lifestyle in the Tocantins rapids. Its jaw dentition is comparatively modest for the genus, without the unusually deep, far-into-the-gullet tooth rows that set its relative C. jegui apart. FishBase and Kullander's checklist give a maximum of about 7 in standard length, though Konings' Enjoying Cichlids tabulates a considerably larger maximum of 12 in, placing the species among the larger pike cichlids of the genus rather than the medium-sized fish FishBase alone would suggest; aquarium specimens are often reported at the larger end of this range. As a member of the small-scaled reticulata-group lineage it carries fine scales and a dark, mottled to marbled ground colour over an olive-to-grey body — cryptic against the rock and shadow of its rapids home — typically broken by a dark lateral band or a row of blotches. Notably, C. cametana is one of only two known Crenicichla capable of an intense, uniform pitch-black coloration, a strikingly uncommon trait in the genus shared only with an undescribed relative from the Rio Xingú; this dark dress likely corresponds to an excited or dominance state rather than the fish's everyday colouring. Unlike C. jegui, it does not show the double cross-bands along the back that mark that species and its undescribed sibling. Like other Crenicichla it shows the genus's modest sexual dimorphism: ripe females are rounder-bellied and frequently develop a contrasting patch of colour on the dorsal fin and a reddish or pale belly, while males grow somewhat larger and longer-finned.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Brazil and to the Tocantins–Araguaia drainage, with records from the lower Tocantins River around Cametá, Tucuruí, Breu Branco, Jatobal and Caperuana (the latter three via the synonymized C. astroblepa), from São Bento in the lower Rio Araguaia — where field observers report it as somewhat less common than its relative C. jegui — and from the Rio Itacaiúnas. Ploeg (1991) also noted a possible record from the Rio das Mortes on the upper Araguaia, though he flagged real uncertainty about the identification, since the brief description of that specimen's coloration left doubt whether it was truly cametana or a similarly shaped but differently coloured species. What sets cametana apart from most of its genus is its biotope: Crenicichla cametana is a rheophilic specialist, a fish of the river's rapids rather than its still margins, that lurks specifically under large rocky overhangs carved out by the current, lying in wait for passing prey. Hrbek and colleagues (2018), studying the rheophilic fishes of the lower Araguaia and Tocantins, list it among the rapids-dwelling specialists found at named cachoeiras such as São Miguel, Remanso dos Botos, Rebojo and São Bento, where the habitat is fast, turbulent, oxygen-rich water flowing over rocky slabs riddled with caves, cracks and crevices and choked with lodged tree trunks — a three-dimensional maze of micro-niches that a pike cichlid exploits as ambush cover. These are warm, soft to moderately mineralized clear- and whitewater rapids of the Amazon-basin lowlands; a June field reading on the Rio Tocantins recorded pH 6.6 and conductivity of just 40 µS/cm (Mayland, 1988), and FishBase records a preferred temperature band of roughly 75–81 °F. Depth in such rapids is shallow to moderate, on the order of a few metres, and the fish hugs the rocky bottom, though despite its strongly bottom-oriented lifestyle it can hold a position in open water without difficulty when it needs to — unlike C. jegui, which manages the same feat only with strong, rather clumsy movements. The genetic study found that populations were strongly structured among individual rapids, evidence that the fish does not readily disperse across the slack water between cataracts.
Feeding
Like essentially all of its genus, Crenicichla cametana is a piscivore — an ambush predator built around a long body, a wide gape and a large mouth full of small recurved teeth. Konings (Enjoying Cichlids) classifies it among the small group of Crenicichla that feed almost exclusively on fish, rather than the broader mixed diet of insects, crustaceans and snails seen in most of the genus; FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.3, consistent with that picture. In the aquarium it has been observed overwhelming food fish measuring more than three-quarters of its own body length. The hunting style is a fixed-ambush one: the fish hides under stones and rocky ledges, particularly the overhangs the current carves out of the rapids' rock slabs, and waits for prey to swim within striking range before launching a sudden, short-range lunge and engulfing it whole — a more sedentary strategy than the open-water pursuit used by some of its faster-swimming Xingú relatives. In the structurally complex rapids it inhabits, the abundance of crevices serves the predator twice over — as cover from which to ambush and as the lairs of the smaller rheophilic fishes and invertebrates it eats.
Mating
No detailed field study of courtship in Crenicichla cametana has been published, and what can be said responsibly draws on the consistent reproductive behaviour of the genus. Pike cichlids form monogamous heterosexual pairs that defend a territory together, and pair formation in Crenicichla is typically preceded by mutual displays in which the partners flare fins, present flanks and circle one another; the female's intensifying belly colour and dorsal-fin patch advertise her readiness. Hobbyist experience with this species, recorded in the American Cichlid Association's Buntbarsche Bulletin, paints Crenicichla cametana as exceptionally pugnacious — wild-caught fish were described as 'a particularly violent pike cichlid' that attacked tankmates within minutes of unpacking, and an established male killed his smaller mate once they were confined to a smaller tank. That aggression is the flip side of the genus's territoriality: until a stable pair bond is forged, conspecifics are treated as rivals, and even after pairing the bond can be volatile. Once a pair does settle, however, the partners cooperate closely, as is typical of substrate-brooding Crenicichla.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented for Crenicichla cametana in the wild, and the description here follows the well-established pattern of the genus. Crenicichla are biparental substrate and cave spawners: the pair cleans a sheltered surface — in a rocky-rapids fish like this one, almost certainly the inside of a crevice or cave among the slabs — and the female attaches her eggs there in a plaque, after which both parents share guard duty, the female tending and fanning the clutch while the male patrols the territory's perimeter. Clutch sizes in medium-large Crenicichla typically run from a few hundred to several hundred eggs (genus-typical figure, undocumented for this species). The eggs hatch in a few days; the wrigglers are moved to pits and the free-swimming fry are then shepherded as a tight school by both parents, who defend them aggressively for weeks. Because the species lives in rapids that are hard to access and is rare in the aquarium trade, no published captive spawning account specific to Crenicichla cametana exists, and the reproductive details above should be read as inferred from its relatives rather than directly observed.
In the aquarium
Crenicichla cametana is a specialist's fish, not a common import. It appears in the hobby only sporadically — historically as occasional wild shipments out of the Rio Tocantins — and the literature that does mention it, chiefly the American Cichlid Association's Buntbarsche Bulletin, flags it as one of the most belligerent pike cichlids of all. Anyone attempting it should plan around that temperament from the start. A single adult that may reach 12 in needs a long tank measured in feet, not litres alone: a footprint of at least 59 in (around 100 US gallons) for one fish, and considerably more if more than one is kept. The proven management trick from keepers is structural cover in quantity — lengths of PVC pipe, stacked rock and bogwood cut and arranged so that each fish can break the others' line of sight. A wholesaler who dumped two dozen wild Crenicichla cametana into a bare tank watched them brutalise each other within minutes; the same fish settled into an uneasy truce once the tank was filled with pipe shards they could disappear into. The practical consequence is that you rarely see the fish except at feeding time, which is the trade-off for keeping them alive.
Water should reflect the warm, well-oxygenated rapids the species comes from: temperature in the mid-to-high 20s °C (about 75–82 °F) and, in the wild, a slightly acid, mineral-poor river (a field reading on the Tocantins gave pH 6.6 and just 40 µS/cm conductivity) — though this species, like its Tocantins relatives, tolerates considerably harder tap water in captivity — plus, importantly, strong current and heavy oxygenation, since this is a rheophilic fish, not a still-water one. Powerful, over-specified filtration serves both the flow requirement and the heavy waste load of a large piscivore; substantial regular water changes are non-negotiable, as pike cichlids are prone to head-and-lateral-line erosion when dissolved waste is allowed to climb. Feeding is straightforward in principle — this is an unfussy predator that takes earthworms, prawn, mussel, larger frozen foods and, once settled, good carnivore pellets, and it has a documented appetite for food fish up to three-quarters its own length — but keepers should avoid relying on feeder fish, which carry disease and offer poor nutrition. Tankmates are the hard part: nothing small enough to be swallowed is safe, and conspecifics or other robust cichlids will be fought unless the tank is very large and broken up. The realistic goal, as one ACA author put it, is patience aimed at a single compatible breeding pair; for most aquarists this is a fish to admire in concept more than to keep, and its rarity plus its conservation situation argue for leaving wild stock in the river.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Crenicichla cametana as Least Concern (assessment by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade, ICMBio; assessed 7 November 2018, published 2022). The category reflects the species still being present across the Tocantins–Araguaia system, but the assessment is candid about the pressure it faces: the single greatest threat it names is habitat loss from the construction of hydroelectric dams, and it notes pointedly that although the area now occupied by the Tucuruí reservoir falls within the species' range, the fish no longer occurs there — the rapids it needed were drowned. This is the crux for a rheophilic specialist. The Tucuruí dam, closed in 1984, converted a long reach of the lower Tocantins from free-flowing rapids into still reservoir; studies of the river's fishery have documented sharp declines in catch and roughly a quarter drop in species richness in its wake, with rapids-dependent and migratory fishes hit hardest, and further dams in the Tocantins cascade (and on the Araguaia) continue to fragment what remains. The genetic work of Hrbek et al. (2018) sharpens the concern: Crenicichla cametana's populations are strongly partitioned among individual rapids, so each cataract lost to impoundment can erase a distinct lineage rather than a replaceable fraction of one continuous stock. A 'Least Concern' label here should be read as 'not yet imperilled across its whole range,' not as security — for a fish this tied to fast water in a basin being progressively dammed, the trajectory deserves watching.
